Abstract

Misogyny has always been a problem in the K-Pop industry. Those misogynistic acts include holding female idols to strict beauty standards, unequal treatments, and harassing and objectifying them. This study focuses on how misogyny functions in the K-Pop industry through content analysis of media representations. It examines how companies treat female idols, how they are portrayed, and how gender dynamics affect their career path. The purpose of this study is to provide a viewpoint of the unequal treatment of women in K-Pop due to their gender, the cause of this as well as how it impacts their mental health, and also to explore the perspective and experiences of female idols as they navigate the patriarchal norms attached in the industry. The results along with the analyses of the study show that misogyny is a familiar issue in the K-Pop industry by showing how female idols are facing unequal treatment and pressure to meet nonsense and strict beauty standards. Also, the harassment and objectification they experienced limited their freedom. This study points out how important it is to talk about misogyny in K-Pop in order to achieve fair treatment and protect their rights.

Abstract

The movie industry has undergone a significant evolution. Initially regarded as a mere entertainment medium, it has now evolved into a highly influential medium for conveying cultural values that reflect the realities of society, as one of the heroic-themed films by Hanung Bramantyo, entitled Kartini. Released in 2017, Kartini recounts the struggles of Raden Ajeng (R.A.) Kartini, a pioneering figure in the Indonesian feminist movement, who faced the constraints of patriarchy by Javanese ancient tradition. In the context of feminism, there is a common misconception about feminism that it is perceived as an anti-male movement. Kartini is interesting to discuss because it presents the complexity of R.A. Kartini's relationship with the male figures around her in a patriarchal and feudal environment of ancient Javanese traditions. This research employs a descriptive-qualitative analysis approach to identify how the male figures in the movie contribute to the narrative of gender equality. Furthermore, it employs Bell Hooks's feminism theory to demonstrate that the concept of feminism is not exclusively by and for women. The analysis findings indicate that the construction of the relationship between R.A. Kartini and several male figures around her contributed to the presence of her progressive thinking. The findings concluded that male figures' contribution to R.A. Kartini's progressive thinking in the fight for gender equality can be described as a form of gender solidarity. The study argues that the findings have significant implications for enhancing our comprehension of the importance of gender solidarity and support for feminism in pursuing gender equality.

Abstract

This study investigates how Jin from BTS's song Epiphany uses the term "Love Yourself" in its lyrics. Insecurity and mental health, which are common among today's young, are directly related to the idea of self-love. BTS actively encourages self-love as a strategy for overcoming fear through their songs and activities like "LOVE MYSELF," which they co-created with UNICEF. Through an analysis of the song's lyrics and its implied and explicit meanings, this article investigates how Epiphany delivers this message. To guarantee an accurate interpretation, the study examines various English translations of the lyrics using a qualitative methodology. According to the results, Epiphany illustrates the process of self-discovery and stresses the value of self-love in spite of one's flaws and emotional difficulties. The protagonist of the song first dedicates his life to serving others, but he eventually comes to see his own value and the importance of loving himself. This study adds to the conversation of music as a tool for raising awareness of mental health issues and emphasizes how BTS builds uplifting stories about accepting oneself. The study emphasizes how young listeners can benefit from music as a powerful tool for reducing uneasiness and promoting self-compassion.

Abstract

Three fantasy books Shadow and Bone (2012), Six of Crows (2015), and Ninth House (2019)by Leigh Bardugo, feature three female characters in an ambiguous position by giving them conflicting characteristics. This study aims to show that these young adult novels present the female characters in an ambiguous position and how they have the characteristics of Women’s Writing. This study is done by analysing the female characters through the narrative of the story and through the characters themselves. The analysis found that the novel's narratives for the three female characters use contradictory actions by using the characteristics of witches and heroes thus making way for the ambiguous stance and by incorporating modern struggles that women go through showing the characteristics of Women’s Writing. It can be concluded that by using contradictory actions through the characteristics of witches and heroes in the three female characters, an ambiguous position could be portrayed and how through them, the characteristics of Women’s Writing can be seen.
