Abstract

Taylor Swift’s song and music video “The Man” explicitly highlight gender-based double standards, offering a bold critique of systemic inequality through visual and lyrical storytelling. The work presents a clear commentary on how women are perceived and treated differently from men in professional, social, and cultural settings. “The Man” offers an image through which to look at and comprehend these gaps through her lyrics and music video. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyse gender inequality issues in the lyrics and music video of “The Man”. This study examines the lyrics and music video using a qualitative content analysis approach to identify basic themes and messages about gender inequality through the narrative and symbolism of the song, aiming to reveal both explicit and implicit messages on gender inequality. By analyzing the lyrics and music video, this study uncovers insights into current gender inequality and the double standards prevalent in modern times. Additionally, "The Man" also highlights the ongoing struggle for gender equality and female empowerment.

Abstract

Nationalism, particularly during war, reaches its upheaval through the lives of civilians who are threatened and yet remain loyal to their country.  Incorporating qualitative methods and critical analysis, this research examines the book As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow by Zoulfa Katouh to explore Kenan's character and the dilemmas he faced in leaving his country during the Syrian Civil War. The objective of this study is to interpret how Kenan's drive for survival, his responsibilities as a husband and eldest brother, and his growing awareness of the atrocities of war can contribute to his nationalism. The research scrutinizes his character as a loyal Syrian civilian faced with the difficult choice of surviving or fleeing the war and becoming a refugee while maintaining his love for Syria. The findings reveal that Kenan's sense of nationalism may influence his final stance to overcome his desire to stay. In Kenan's case, staying meant sacrificing more of his loved ones, so he embraced the chance to flee yet remain bound as a proud Syrian citizen wherever he was. This study argues that nationalism is not limited to the country's location. Kenan's character builds a family-priority perspective, while nationalism becomes part of his enduring identity.

Abstract

Women in medieval fantasy narratives have historically been marginalized, particularly through their exclusion from political agency and representation. This feminist study examines HBO’s popular series, House of the Dragon, analyzing key characters Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower to uncover how systemic patriarchy shapes their leadership and political strategies. Through textual and visual analysis, this research explores women’s agency in patriarchal society, asking whether the series critiques or replicates misogyny. Findings reveal that House of the Dragon reflects misogynistic norms, such as Rhaenyra’s claim to the Iron Throne—though named heir by the previous King—is constantly challenged due to her gender. At the same time, Alicent leverages the patriarchal structure to gain political influence. House of the Dragon may intend to critique patriarchy by highlighting Rhaenyra and Alicent’s struggles and framing their power as a form of resistance. However, it inadvertently reinforces patriarchy by punishing both characters for attempting to dismantle the system.

Abstract

ABSTRACT At times, tradition functions not only as a mode to preserve cultural identity and shared values but also as a tool for maintaining political agendas. Using qualitative methods, this study examines the intersection of Tradition and Ideology through the exploitation experienced by Srintil, the main protagonist in the novel The Dancer, written by Ahmad Tohari. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the ronggeng tradition, particularly as performed by Srintil, functions not only as a symbol of cultural identity but also as a site of gender dynamics and a political and ideological instrument in The Dancer. The findings indicate that the novel challenges the romanticized notion of tradition by revealing its connection to power structures, exploitation, and political ideology agendas, often without the awareness or agency of the performer, in this case, Srintil. This article argues that analyzing the main female protagonist's experiences as a ronggeng offers a critical perspective on tradition, particularly those centered around women.
