Abstract

Abstract

The emergence of Qur'anic commentaries and translations in local languages reflects the influence of the socio-cultural context of the interpreters, where Qur'anic exegesis is an intellectual construct aimed at actualizing the message of revelation according to societal needs. This study examines Tafsīr Fayḍ al-Raḥmān by Kiai Shaleh Darat as a representation of the internalization of Javanese culture within Islam, creating a distinct style of exegesis based on local wisdom. This work was written in Javanese using Arabic Pegon script as a da'wah strategy and intellectual resistance against Dutch colonialism in the late 19th century. The use of Javanese was intended to facilitate understanding among the general public while circumventing the colonial government's prohibition on translating religious texts. The analysis shows that this commentary not only served as a tool for religious education but also as a medium for preserving cultural identity and symbolic resistance against colonial hegemony. This research is a descriptive-analytical study employing a historical approach by exploring the socio-political background and intellectual network of Kiai Shaleh Darat. The findings reveal that Tafsīr Fayḍ al-Raḥmān represents the dialectic between sacred text and local reality through contextual interpretation methods, while affirming the role of Nusantara scholars as agents of culturally rooted Islamization.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the concept of taskhīr al-baḥr (subjugation of the sea) in the Qur’an and its implementation within the framework of the blue economy to promote the economic development of the Muslim community in Indonesia. It analyzes Surah an-Nahl [16]:14, which implies a mechanism for utilizing the sea and aquatic resources, and integrates it with the blue economy concept. The study finds that the concept of taskhīr al-baḥr produces an effective and efficient mechanism for the utilization of the sea and its resources through three aspects: the use of marine life as food, pearls as ornaments, and ships as a means of transportation. The integration of the taskhīr al-baḥr concept within the blue economy framework has the potential to advance the community’s economy through efficient resource utilization, job creation, and a balanced approach to production and consumption. This research contributes to the development of a model for marine resource management based on Qur’anic values and blue economy principles, which can be implemented in Indonesia’s marine policy.

Abstract

This research examines the evolution of Sufism as the practical actualization of ihsan (spiritual excellence), tracing its development from an ethical-ascetic orientation to speculative-philosophical dimensions, its institutionalization into global Sufi orders (tariqah), and its contemporary adaptation mechanisms. The central research question is: How did the diverse streams of Sufi thought, rooted in the concept of ihsan, historically evolve and institutionalize, and what strategies enable them to maintain relevance in a globalized, modern world, particularly in Southeast Asia? This study employs a qualitative library research method with a historical-phenomenological framework. Data is synthesized from foundational Islamic texts like the Hadith, classical Sufi works such as Al-Ghazali's Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din, Rumi's Matsnawi, and Ibn 'Atha'illah's Al-Hikam, modern academic books, and recent peer-reviewed journals. The findings indicate that Sufism, far from being a marginal phenomenon, is a central and dynamic dimension of Islam rooted in the tripartite framework of Islam-Iman-Ihsan. It has evolved through distinct historical periods: formative (9th-12th c.), consolidation during major empires (15th-17th c.), and reformist (17th-19th c.). Its enduring vitality lies in the adaptive capacity of the tariqah structure. In the contemporary era, Sufi orders demonstrate remarkable resilience by embracing digital technologies, engaging in inter-religious dialogue, and continuing a tradition of cultural hybridization. This adaptability ensures Sufism's continued relevance as a living tradition for actualizing ihsan in the modern world.

Abstract

This study discusses the concept of maqamat in classical Sufism literature and its implementation in the context of modern life. Maqamat, as spiritual stages that a salik goes through, have been systematically developed by classical Sufis such as al-Sarraj, al-Qusyairi, and al-Hujwiri. This research uses a qualitative approach with literature study method and hermeneutic analysis to reconstruct the meaning of maqamat contextually. The results show that the reinterpretation of maqamat with a philosophical hermeneutic approach enables the integration of classical spiritual values into modern urban life, including in the realm of professional, community, and psychological therapy. In addition, the integration of the maqamat concept with positive psychology demonstrates its transformative potential in the development of contemporary therapeutic spirituality. This research offers a model of maqamat implementation that is flexible, inclusive, and relevant to the challenges of modern times, and bridges the gap between the classical Islamic spiritual treasures and the spiritual needs of modern humans.

Abstract

This study reinterprets Quranic verses on polygamy (specifically QS An-Nisā’:3) through Ibn ʿᾹshūr’s maqāṣid al-sharīʿah theory to address accusations of gender bias in Islam. Employing descriptive qualitative methodology and content analysis, it critically examines classical and contextual interpretations that either rigidly adhere to textualism or overemphasize socio-historical contexts, both deemed insufficient for resolving contemporary gender critiques. Ibn ʿᾹshūr’s approach presented as a moderate, universal framework minimizing juristic discord and blind fanaticism—reveals three key insights: First, the verse intrinsically links to preceding orphan-protection contexts, with polygamy framed as an emergency solution to prevent adultery (zinā) amid social vulnerabilities. Second, polygamy’s permissibility carries stringent, non-negotiable conditions of material and relational justice (e.g., separate residences, equitable financial support), rendering it practically arduous and contextually restricted. Third, asymmetrical rulings—permitting polygamy but prohibiting polyandry are justified through fiqh al-awlawiyāt (prioritization jurisprudence): polygamy’s micro-level harms ( jealousy) are outweighed by its macro-level benefits ( lineage preservation, disease prevention), while polyandry’s irreversible harms (lineage confusion, disease proliferation) exceed its potential benefits. The study concludes that Ibn ‘Āsyūr’s theory offers a balanced, gender-neutral exegesis by harmonizing textual fidelity with contextual maṣlaḥah (public interest), positioning polygamy as a last-resort safeguard rather than an unconditional right. This approach is advocated for reinterpretations of other contested Islamic legal verses.

Abstract

Balaghah science is a discipline of Arabic language that plays an important role in the interpretation of the Qur'an in order to reveal the greatness of the grammar of the Qur'an. This science also plays a role for someone to know and understand how to communicate using beautiful, effective, targeted language and situations. This article attempts to reveal the phases of the development of balaghah science, reveal the relationship between the taste of the language of the Qur'an and its relationship to balaghah science, and the role of balaghah science in classical and contemporary interpretations. This article uses a bibliography writing methodology using descriptive and scientific analysis methods. The results of this study indicate that balaghah science has been inherent in the culture of the Arab Jahiliyah nation, as well as after the revelation of the Qur'an so that scholars classified it into three major themes in this study; bayan science, badi' science and maani science. The existence of the science of balaghah as a response to the beauty of the language of the Qur'an so that the theories in the science of balaghah known as kinayah, isti'arah, majaz mursal and other theories are applied in revealing the beauty of the taste of the verses of the Qur'an, so that the balaghah of the Qur'an reveals the Secret of the Qur'an which is very abundant, while human capabilities are very limited.
