Abstract

This study examines the concept of tazkiyah (soul purification) as the main pillar of prophetic mission in the Qur'an through a comparative study of Nusantara exegesis. The focus is directed at the interpretation of two authoritative Indonesian mufassirs of the 20th century, Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah (Hamka) in Tafsir Al-Azhar and Tengku Muhammad Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy in Tafsir Al-Qur'anul Majid An-Nur. Through library research with a descriptive-analytical-comparative approach, this study analyzes five main verses containing the term yuzakkihim (purifying them), namely Surah Al-Baqarah (2): 129, 174; Ali 'Imran (3): 77, 164; and Al-Jumu'ah (62): 2. The analysis results show that Hamka reconstructs the meaning of tazkiyah in an integrative-holistic manner covering physical hygiene (physical-hygienic aspect) and spiritual purity (theological-moral aspect). Conversely, Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy consistently interprets tazkiyah within the limits of spiritual purification, namely liberation of the soul from the stain of shirk, superstition, heresy, and formation of noble moral character for social order.

Abstract

Abstract. The global ecological crisis is becoming increasingly severe due to the excessive exploitation of natural resources, one of which is deforestation in Sumatra. Forest destruction in this region is driven by land conversion for plantations, mining, and infrastructure development, resulting in biodiversity loss, ecological disasters, and climate change. This issue indicates that environmental crises are caused not only by weak policies but also by an anthropocentric paradigm that places nature solely as an object of human exploitation. This study aims to analyze the shift in environmental ethical paradigms from anthropocentrism to ecocentrism as a philosophical solution to deforestation in Sumatra. The research employs a qualitative method through a literature study using a philosophical-critical approach. The findings reveal that the anthropocentric paradigm encourages systematic forest exploitation, while ecocentrism offers a perspective that recognizes the intrinsic value of nature and the importance of ecosystem sustainability. This paradigm shift can be realized through ethical transformation, political-legal reforms, and the development of public ecological awareness. Therefore, addressing deforestation requires a transformation in the moral paradigm of humans toward nature, not merely technical approaches.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the construction of meaning and the practice of pilgrimage (ziarah) at the Kubua Gutua Grave in Talang Ginting Village, North Bengkulu. As a sacred site, the grave of Raden Agung (Puyang Buk Putiak) serves as the center of spiritual and social orientation for the local Rejang community. Utilizing a qualitative-descriptive design with a phenomenological approach, this research analyzes data collected through in-depth interviews with the tomb's caretaker (juru kunci), traditional leaders, and pilgrims. The results indicate that the pilgrimage tradition at Kubua Gutua represents a harmonious form of syncretism between normative Islamic teachings and local cultural residues. The grave plays a functional role in the community's agricultural cycle, where pre-planting and post-harvest rituals are conducted to invoke food blessings. Furthermore, this study identifies a dialectic of tawassul, in which the community perceives the mystical nature of the grave not as an object of worship, but as a spiritual wasilah (intermediary) to Allah SWT. Beyond material motivations, the pilgrimage also functions psychologically as a means of achieving inner peace and providing an eschatological reminder (dzikrul maut). This study concludes that the Kubua Gutua tradition persists due to its ability to adapt to the challenges of modernity without abandoning the Islamic identity of the community

Abstract

The plastic waste crisis in the modern era is a global environmental problem that not only impacts ecosystem degradation but also reflects a moral crisis in society's consumption behavior. The increasing use of single-use plastics, driven by practical lifestyles and consumerist culture, has exacerbated the accumulation of non-biodegradable waste, posing a serious threat to environmental sustainability. This study aims to analyze the plastic waste crisis as a global moral problem through the perspective of environmental philosophy, emphasizing the relationship between humans and nature and its implications for consumption behavior. The method employed is a qualitative approach through literature study, examining various environmental ethical theories such as anthropocentrism, biocentrism, and ecocentrism. The expected findings indicate that the dominance of the anthropocentric paradigm has encouraged exploitative and unsustainable consumption patterns, while biocentric and ecocentric approaches offer alternative ethical frameworks that are more holistic in maintaining ecosystem balance. Furthermore, this study suggests that transforming consumption behavior requires a shift in moral awareness grounded in ecological values. Therefore, the plastic waste crisis should not only be understood as a technical issue but also as an ethical crisis that demands a paradigm shift, collective responsibility, and the adoption of sustainable lifestyles.

Abstract

Amar ma‘rūf nahi munkar is one of the fundamental principles in Islamic teachings that functions to maintain moral integrity and social order within the Muslim community. This concept is not merely normative–theological in nature, but also requires appropriate and contextual methods of implementation. This study aims to examine the methods of amar ma‘rūf nahi munkar according to Ibn Kathīr and Muḥammad Hasbi Aṣ-Ṣiddieqy, as well as to analyze the similarities and differences in their perspectives. This research employs a library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach and comparative tafsīr analysis. Data were collected through an examination of Qur’anic verses related to amar ma‘rūf nahi munkar and a study of the exegetical works of both scholars. The findings indicate that Ibn Kathīr views amar ma‘rūf nahi munkar as an obligation incumbent upon all Muslims, with its implementation adjusted to individual capacity, whether through authority, verbal admonition, or rejection in the heart. Meanwhile, Hasbi Aṣ-Ṣiddieqy emphasizes that, at the practical level, this obligation is entrusted to groups possessing scholarly competence, social awareness, and moral integrity, and must be accompanied by mechanisms of supervision and correction. Comparatively, these two perspectives are complementary and remain relevant in the contemporary context, as they integrate broad community participation with a professional and responsible implementation of amar ma‘rūf nahi munkar.
