Abstract

This article examines the phenomenon of shirk (polytheism) in Surah Al-Kahf and explores the preventive solutions offered by the Qur'an using a thematic exegesis approach. As the gravest sin and the root of spiritual corruption, shirk is presented in Surah Al-Kahf through four major narratives: the People of the Cave, the owners of the two gardens, the journey of Moses and al-Khidr, and the story of Dhu al-Qarnayn. These narratives illustrate various forms of shirk, including doctrinal shirk, ritual shirk, attitudinal shirk, and shirk related to authority and power. The study finds that Surah Al-Kahf not only depicts explicit manifestations of shirk but also warns against modern forms such as intellectual arrogance, materialism, exaggerated reliance on worldly causes, and the deification of authority. Moreover, it provides preventive solutions through the affirmation of divine oneness, exemplary stories of prophets and righteous individuals, spiritual education, and the cultivation of humility and reliance upon God. The findings contribute to thematic Qur’anic studies and offer practical insights for educators and religious institutions in strengthening theological resilience in contemporary contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the involvement of fathers as educators of their children from the perspective of the Qur’an through a comparative study of Tafsir Al-Misbah by M. Quraish Shihab and Tafsir Mafatih al-Ghaib by Fakhruddin ar-Razi. The main research problems are how both exegetes interpret the father’s role as an educator, what similarities and differences exist, and how their views remain relevant to child education in Indonesia. This research applies a qualitative method with a hermeneutic approach through library research. Primary data were obtained from both tafsir works, supported by secondary sources such as other tafsir, books, and scholarly articles. The findings reveal that Quraish Shihab emphasizes the father’s role as an emotional, communicative, and affectionate guide, while Fakhruddin ar-Razi stresses rationality, theological arguments, and the strengthening of faith. The synthesis of both perspectives results in the concept of “father’s capital,” which covers spiritual, moral, intellectual, and emotional dimensions. The study concludes that the father’s involvement in children’s education is not only significant in the normative religious context but also practical in shaping an Islamic parenting model relevant to contemporary challenges.

Abstract

The discourse on polygamy in Muslim societies often stems from textual readings that overlook the socio-historical context of Qur’anic revelation. This article re-examines Q.S. an-Nis?’ [4]:3 through an interdisciplinary approach integrating tafsir studies, Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics, and Kurt Lewin’s field theory to analyze the psychosocial pathology within polygamous families. This qualitative library research draws upon primary sources such as Tafsir al-Mishbah, Ricoeur’s From Text to Action, and Lewin’s Field Theory in Social Science, supported by contemporary studies related to polygamy and family psychology. The findings indicate that Quraish Shihab interprets polygamy as a conditional allowance aimed at safeguarding justice and social welfare, rather than an encouraged marital model. Ricoeur’s hermeneutics demonstrates that the verse must undergo distanciation and recontextualization, shifting its meaning from legitimizing polygamy to emphasizing ethical responsibility toward vulnerable groups. Meanwhile, Lewin’s perspective shows that polygamous families tend to form a tension-filled relational field marked by emotional competition, instability, and fragmented interaction patterns. The study concludes that polygamy contains inherent theological, ethical, and psychosocial vulnerabilities, thus positioning it as an exceptional rather than normative marital structure. This interdisciplinary integration offers a holistic reading of the verse and contributes to contemporary Qur’anic studies by linking textual interpretation with psychosocial implications in modern family systems.

Abstract

The conceptual and operational problems in the Makki–Madani classification, which has often been used as a periodization label but has yet to function optimally as a tool for tafs?r analysis. The main issue lies in the overlapping criteria of time, place, and audience, as well as weak weighing procedures when narrations differ or verses are of mixed nature. This research employs qualitative library research with content analysis and internal-external criticism of classical Ulum al-Qur’an literature and contemporary studies, then formulates a reconstruction model based on hierarchical criteria and cross-examination of linguistic-thematic indicators and social context. The findings show that rearranging the hierarchy (with time as the axis, and place and audience as reinforcing elements) along with a verification mechanism makes the determination of Makki–Madani more transparent, replicable, and more relevant for reading the communicative purpose of revelation. These findings also strengthen the integration of Ulum al-Qur’an with hermeneutic approaches in contemporary tafs?r. Practically, this framework helps researchers interpret surah coherence, map the development of da'wah themes, and avoid hasty contextual generalizations in recent studies. In conclusion, the reconstruction of Makki–Madani enhances the accountability of interpretation without severing ties with classical tradition.

Abstract

This article discusses the method of ecological interpretation represented by Syeikh Ali Jum’ah in his work al-Bi’ah Wa al-Hifdzu ‘Alaih Min Manarin Islamiyin.  The main objective of this research is to see the characteristics of Sheikh Ali Jum’ah’s interpretation method of verses related to ecological issues. Furthermore, implementing the results of the interpretation of the method to respond to NU’s policy in taking the coal mining concession permit on May 30, 2024. The research method uses qualitative and library research approach. This study concludes that Sheikh Ali Jum’ah’s ecological interpretation method has a Maudhu’i-Isyari style using the Eko-Fiqhi approach based on the principles of al-haq and al-Wajib, from both of which gave birth to a new concept called huquq al-Bi’ah and Wajib al-Bi’ah. Furthermore, it concludes that NU’s policy in accepting coal mining concessions is not in line with the principles of ecological interpretation of Syeikh Ali Jum’ah so that on this basis NU must withdraw the license.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to examine the concept of embryology as explained in the Qur'an and relate it to modern scientific discoveries in the field of biology. The approach used is library research with thematic interpretation analysis of Qur'anic verses that discuss the process of human creation, particularly the stages of fetal development in the womb. The findings indicate that the Qur'anic explanation of embryology has a strong correlation with modern scientific theories, both in terminology and the described biological stages. The Qur'an explicitly mentions several important stages, such as nuthfah, 'alaqah, mudhghah, to the formation of bones and their covering with flesh, which correspond to the embryogenesis process known in science. This research also emphasizes the importance of integrating science and religion in education, particularly in biology learning, so that students gain a holistic understanding, encompassing both physical and spiritual aspects of human creation.

Abstract

This study investigates the integration of Semitic Rhetorical Analysis (SRA) and scientific exegesis to enhance the interpretation of Surah Al-Thariq (Q. 86). Drawing on Michel Cuypers’ SRA framework, the research explores how the Surah’s rhetorical structure reveals thematic coherence and theological depth, particularly in its engagement with cosmological and natural phenomena. Focusing on key verses—such as verse 3 (the piercing star), verses 6–7 (human creation), verse 11 (atmospheric layers), and verse 12 (geological foundations)—the analysis demonstrates how SRA contextualizes scientific interpretations within the Surah’s parallel structure. Analyses of scientific insights, including pulsars, embryological development, atmospheric regulation, and tectonic dynamics, reveal a significant consonance with Qur’anic descriptions, suggesting a close correspondence between scripture and modern scientific perspectives. SRA enriches this alignment by framing these phenomena as rhetorical devices that support the Surah’s central eschatological themes—resurrection, divine omnipotence, and cosmic order. The synthesis of SRA and scientific exegesis thus bridges revelation with modern knowledge, affirming the Qur’an’s layered communicative strategy and its enduring capacity to convey spiritual and intellectual meaning.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has transformed patterns of social life, family values, and the religious dynamics of Muslim societies. This advancement offers significant opportunities for the dissemination of knowledge and da‘wah, yet it also poses challenges in the form of moral disorientation, weakened family communication, and increasing digital individualism. This study aims to examine the relevance of Qur’anic teachings in building family and societal resilience in the digital era, with a particular focus on Q.S. At-Tahrim [66]:6 as its normative foundation. Employing a thematic (maudhu‘i) tafsir approach, this research explores the core values contained in the verse related to spiritual, moral, and social responsibilities within the family context. The findings indicate that the Qur’an provides a resilience framework grounded in the values of taqwa, amanah, and ukhuwah, which can be contextually implemented through family education, Islamic digital literacy, and the strengthening of social ethics in cyberspace. The revitalization of Qur’anic teachings thus becomes a strategic step in reinforcing family integrity while fostering a harmonious and resilient society in the face of value disruption in the digital age. This study contributes to the development of contemporary Islamic studies, particularly in the fields of family resilience and Qur’an-based social ethics.

Abstract

This study examines the theological problem of religious pluralism from the perspective of the Qur'an through a comparative (muqaranah) analysis of three key verses: Q.S. al-Baqarah (2): 62, Q.S. al-Maidah (5): 69, and Q.S. al-Haj (22): 17. The academic issue arises from the tension between inclusive messages that acknowledge the potential salvation for non-Muslims based on universal faith and righteous deeds, and exclusive verses that emphasize Islamic finality and divine authority. Using a qualitative library research method with a comparative interpretive approach, this study analyzes classical and contemporary commentaries to explore hermeneutical nuances, historical contexts, and possible relational interpretations (nasikh-mansukh or specificity-generality). The findings reveal that the Qur'an constructs a multi-layered theological paradigm: it recognizes transcendent criteria for salvation (faith and good deeds), affirms Islam's truth claim, and simultaneously asserts Allah's absolute authority as the final judge. This dialectic avoids both religious relativism and exclusivist dogmatism, offering a balanced framework for interfaith coexistence. The novelty lies in the systematic comparison of these verses, highlighting the Qur'an's internal dynamics and proposing a "Theology of Testimony and Trust" (Teologi Kesaksian dan Tawakkal) as an ethical-theological model for engaging with religious diversity.
