Abstract

Springs are a natural resource with significant ecological and cultural value for the people of Central Sumba Regency, particularly within the Marapu belief system. However, modernization and environmental changes threaten their sustainability. To revive local wisdom related to springs, the Community Service Team of FIB UI conducted a revitalization program at SMA Kristen Waibakul, Central Sumba. One of the main activities was an art competition themed "Springs in Sumbanese Culture," engaging students in interpreting the cultural and ecological values of springs through art. The competition received great enthusiasm, with 40 participants expressing their experiences and cultural identities through their artwork. The resulting artworks reflect a deep understanding of the role of springs in the lives of the indigenous Sumbanese people. Besides raising awareness of the importance of spring conservation, this activity also strengthened the younger generation’s pride in their local culture. The selected artworks were exhibited and published as an educational and promotional medium for local wisdom. This program is expected to serve as a model for sustainable, culture-based resource management.

Abstract

The expansion of oil palm plantations around Bukit Dua Belas National Park in Jambi over the past few decades has not only contributed to climate change but has also significantly impacted the socio-cultural and economic life of the indigenous Suku Anak Dalam community, who have inhabited the forest as their settlement for hundreds of years. Jambi, with its vast tropical forest potential, is not only rich in biodiversity but also holds important cultural value, particularly from the Suku Anak Dalam Air Hitam community. In recent decades, this community has faced agrarian, social, and economic conflicts as a result of palm oil plantation development, which has increasingly narrowed their living and hunting areas in the Bukit Dua Belas region. This shrinking space has led to socio-economic and cultural disruptions, including members of the Suku Anak Dalam descending to urban areas to beg for a living. In an effort to mitigate this social and cultural degradation, a cultural-economic approach has been proposed, introducing the concept of special interest cultural tourism based on local wisdom. The dissemination of this initiative was conducted directly in the field using a cultural communication approach, involving discussions with traditional leaders of the Suku Anak Dalam. As a result of this dissemination on the potential and economic benefits of cultural tourism, several mutual understandings and agreements were reached. These include a shared commitment to develop cultural potential into special interest tourism, the willingness of the Suku Anak Dalam Air Hitam to welcome tourists under the condition that visitors respect and adhere to local customs and traditions, and an agreement that tourists who violate customary rules must pay a fine in the form of a piece of cloth. Additionally, the local government has committed to further study and formulate regulations that will support and protect this initiative.

Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance the understanding of elementary school students in Kampung Tugu Portugis regarding the importance of Cultural Heritage and Intangible Cultural Heritage in their environment. Kampung Tugu is a historic area shaped by the cultural fusion of Portuguese Mardijkers and the Betawi community. Based on interviews with local sources, it was found that there is a lack of cultural heritage education among the younger generation, particularly at SDN Semper Barat 01. The program activities included educational sessions, site visits, the creation of pocketbooks, a performance of Tugu keroncong music, and the development of a wall magazine. Evaluation through pre-tests and post-tests showed a significant increase in students’ understanding after the program. This initiative is expected to foster a sense of ownership and pride among students toward their local cultural heritage, as well as to encourage active participation in its preservation. The results of this program also highlight the importance of collaboration between academics, schools, and the community in preserving cultural heritage through engaging and locally based educational approaches.

Abstract

The development of digital technology, while offering many conveniences, has also led the younger generation to become overly absorbed in their gadgets. Many young people today find it difficult to detach themselves from their devices. This situation can have negative effects on children's psychological development, as they need both motor and social stimulation. Traditional children's games offer significant benefits for physical and mental growth. Coinciding with the Summer Solstice event in Borobudur—when the Moon is positioned directly above Borobudur's coordinates—the Summer Solstice Festival was held in Karangrejo Tourism Village, Magelang. In support of this festival, a community service program was conducted to promote the “Full Moon Tradition. In Javanese society, the full moon tradition in the past was a time when communities would gather under the full moon and engage in various activities, such as playing traditional games, dancing, singing, and performing full moon meditation. This community service program involved students and residents of Karangrejo Tourism Village in presenting a variety of artistic activities during the full moon night. The goal of this initiative is to promote literacy about the full moon tradition, which has become increasingly rare in the era of digital technology.

Abstract

Indonesia’s coastal and archipelagic regions are vulnerable to disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods. In this context, community service activities require participatory and educational approaches that are easily understood by people of various ages and backgrounds. This article discusses the use of visual aids—such as infographics, leaflets, animated videos, illustrations, and x-banners—as tools for disaster education. Through a literature review of four articles on community service programs, this study finds that visual aids are effective in increasing disaster risk awareness, reinforcing visual memory of mitigation procedures, and engaging vulnerable groups such as children and indigenous communities. This approach also enables the integration of local knowledge into culturally and regionally grounded risk reduction strategies. The article recommends the use of visual methods as a transformative strategy for disaster education in coastal and island areas.
