Abstract

This study explores how Bugis-Makassar women construct and navigate plural reproductive knowledge in response to abortus imminens (threatened miscarriage), drawing on Talcott Parsons’ AGIL framework to analyze the sociocultural functions of care practices. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Makassar, Indonesia, including interviews and participant observation with ten pregnant women, the study reveals that reproductive behavior is shaped by adaptive strategies (A), collective goals (G), moral integration (I), and intergenerational transmission of norms (L). Rather than following a singular medical logic, women mobilize syncretic forms of care that blend biomedical treatment, spiritual rituals, and ancestral taboos. These plural responses reflect not only epistemic hybridity but also reproductive governance enacted through kinship, religious authority, and clinical institutions. Women's agency is expressed not through open resistance, but through strategic moral navigation and embodied alignment with normative expectations—a form of what Mahmood terms the ethics of self-formation. The findings challenge biomedical-centric approaches to maternal health and highlight the need for culturally responsive interventions that respect local logics of risk, protection, and care. This study contributes to sociological debates on medical pluralism, moral regulation, and the reproduction of gendered knowledge in the Global South.

Abstract

This study explores how Bahasa Indonesia operates as a diplomatic instrument in global legal negotiations, positioning it as a culturally embedded yet strategically functional tool in the international legal arena. Using doctrinal legal research, the article examines treaties, legal frameworks, and diplomatic practices involving Indonesia to uncover the mechanisms through which language contributes to legal engagement and negotiation. The findings underscore the role of Bahasa Indonesia not only as a medium of communication but also as a conveyor of legal identity, national values, and negotiation strategy. The research concludes that linguistic representation in international law fosters legal pluralism and enhances the legitimacy and inclusiveness of global legal norms.

Abstract

This study explores how marginalized communities in Makassar construct and sustain their life rhythms amidst the temporal pressures shaped by infrastructure systems, mobility regimes, and urban development logics. Employing a space- and time-based urban ethnographic approach, the research traces residents’ daily tactics, rhythmic narratives, and spatial practices in navigating mobility exclusion and the accelerating, non-inclusive urban pace. Field findings reveal that residents engage in various forms of micro-resistance—such as adjusting selling hours, utilizing interstitial moments in urban space, and cultivating social rhythms that diverge from technocratic logics. Within temporalities not governed by state or capital, urban spaces are collectively reproduced from below, positioning spatial production as a bottom-up process rather than a top-down imposition. The study contributes theoretically by advancing Lefebvre’s rhythmanalysis, Urry’s notion of differential mobility, and Gandy’s political ecology of infrastructure within the context of Global South cities. By foregrounding time as a critical analytical lens, the research expands our understanding of how power operates temporally in urban life, and how residents negotiate this power through their everyday rhythms. Ultimately, this research offers a new perspective for interpreting urban dynamics—not only through spatiality but also through socially produced temporalities.

Abstract

Makassar is currently facing a mobility crisis that is not merely technical, but deeply embedded in the social, political, and spatial dimensions of urban life. Mobility spaces in the city—roads, transport nodes, and travel rhythms—have become contested arenas where technocratic planning collides with residents’ everyday realities. This study aims to examine how mobility spaces in Makassar are produced, negotiated, and lived by urban dwellers amid infrastructural dysfunction and unequal access. Using a qualitative, city-based ethnographic approach, the research was conducted across key mobility corridors and densely populated neighborhoods. Conceptually, this study draws on the frameworks of spatial anarchy (Castells & Smith), temporal disorientation (Zerubavel), and the politics of infrastructure (Larkin) to analyze how disorganized space and time shape citizens’ mobility experiences. Findings reveal that Makassar’s mobility space is marked by spatial fragmentation, erratic urban rhythms, and various forms of micro-resistance—such as the use of informal routes, modifications to pete-pete (minibus) trajectories, and the occupation of street space by informal economic activities. This research contributes theoretically to urban anthropology and the discourse on mobility justice by foregrounding the need to understand cities from below—through the lived experiences of residents who continuously adapt within unruly and unstable urban environments

Abstract

This study explores how influencer marketing shapes digital identity and spatial relations in Makassar, Indonesia, through a spatially grounded urban ethnography approach. This framework enables a deep reading of how urban residents engage with digital practices to navigate symbolic and spatial exclusion generated by influencer content. Through social media observation, narrative interviews, and the tracing of urban locations featured in visual representation, the study finds that influencer marketing does not merely sell products—it also reproduces social hierarchies through aesthetic spatiality and the logic of visibility. Yet, amid such exclusions, marginalized communities deploy diverse tactics of resistance, including visual reengineering, the use of alternative locations, and digital irony that disrupt dominant narratives. These findings suggest that digital identity is not passively consumed but actively negotiated through concrete and often unexpected spatial relations. Drawing on Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space, Urry’s concept of digital mobilities, and Gandy’s politics of infrastructure, the study shows how cities and digital spaces co-constitute a contested symbolic terrain. The article’s main contribution lies in advancing a Global South perspective, where digital technologies and aesthetics are practiced contextually and do not always conform to the logics of global capitalism. This research underscores that urban—and digital—space is not solely produced from above, but also from below, through the everyday agency of ordinary citizens.

Abstract

Despite decades of global HIV/AIDS education efforts, the gap between awareness and preventive behavior among youth remains a persistent challenge. University students—typically well-educated and socially engaged—are expected to be proactive in health matters, yet many remain passive in HIV prevention efforts. This study examines the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of university students in Indonesia regarding HIV/AIDS, and analyzes the cognitive and structural barriers that hinder behavioral change. The research applies two theoretical frameworks: the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Health Belief Model (HBM). A quantitative survey was conducted among 268 students at Hasanuddin University. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to assess levels of HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes, and preventive actions. Skewness and kurtosis were also calculated to explore distributional patterns. While students demonstrated high levels of knowledge (M = 16.34) and positive attitudes (M = 31.36), their preventive behavior was notably low (M = 10.74), with skewed distributions indicating widespread inaction. Misconceptions about HIV transmission and curability were common. Both TPB and HBM helped explain the role of perceived barriers, weak normative support, and low self-efficacy in limiting behavioral intention. Findings highlight a critical knowledge–action gap driven by social stigma, misinformation, and lack of institutional cues to action. Effective HIV prevention requires not only awareness but also structured interventions that enhance agency, normalize testing, and dismantle behavioral barriers within youth populations

Abstract

This study discusses the implementation of Government Goods/Services Procurement Electronically (E-Procurement) from the perspective of Collaborative Governance in Pekanbaru City. The focus of this research is on the effetiveness of e-catalogs, the involvement of local business actors, and cooperation between local government agencies. The aim of this research is to analyze and describe the e-procurement process within a collaborative framework and to identify the obstacles faced. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techinuques through interviews with the local UKPBJ of Pekanbaru City, the Departement of Trade and Industry of Pekanbaru City, the Inspectorate of Pekanbaru dan the Department of Cooperatives and MSMEs of Pekanbaru City. The result of this study indicate that collaboration among actors is on going but not yet optimal, especially in horizontal dimensions. The involvement of local business actors is still limited due to a lack of technical assistance and information. This research recommends strebgthening the role of local governments as facilitators of collaboration, enchancing the capatity of business actors, and fostering synergy between institutions to achieve participatory, transparent procurement using domestic products.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of job satisfaction and work motivation on organizational commitment of employees at the Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP) of Bogor Regency. The research employed a quantitative causal approach with a population of 65 employees working in the Guidance and Inspection Division of Satpol PP Bogor Regency. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results revealed that, partially, both job satisfaction and work motivation have a significant effect on organizational commitment, as indicated by the t-value being greater than the t-table. Simultaneously, both variables also showed a significant effect with a P Value of 20.706 and Sig. 0.000 < 0.05. The Adjusted R Square value of 0.381 indicates that job satisfaction and work motivation contribute 38.1% to organizational commitment, while the remaining 61.9% is influenced by other factors not examined in this study. The regression equation obtained is Y = 13.869 + 0.271X1 + 0.449X2, which demonstrates a positive influence of both independent variables on organizational commitment. Among the two variables, work motivation was found to be the most dominant factor, with a regression coefficient of 0.449.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of public perception on the quality of public services at the Department of Population and Civil Registration (Disdukcapil) of Bogor Regency. The type of research used is descriptive quantitative. The population in this study consists of people who carried out administrative services at the Disdukcapil office of Bogor Regency, with a total sample of 100 respondents. Data analysis was conducted using the Weighted Means Score (WMS) method. The results of the study show that: (1) The highest average score from the analysis of public service quality indicators was the indicator related to “technical service requirements at Disdukcapil being easy to understand by the public,” which obtained an average value of 3.50, categorized as good. Another high indicator was “the completion of administrative processes at Disdukcapil on time,” with an average score of 3.55, also categorized as good. Meanwhile, the lowest average score was 3.19, categorized as fairly good, on indicators such as “the public feeling that their security is guaranteed when managing administrative services at Disdukcapil” and “service officers being disciplined in providing services to the community.” (2) The final recapitulation of the analysis across the ten main indicators of public service quality shows that the highest average score was found in the Certainty indicator, with a score of 3.48, categorized as fairly good. On the other hand, the lowest average scores were in the Discipline and Comfort indicators, both with scores of 3.23, also categorized as fairly good. (3) Overall, the average score of all public service quality indicators in this study was 3.34, categorized as fairly good. This indicates that, in general, the public perceives the quality of public services at the Disdukcapil of Bogor Regency to be fairly good. The recommendation given is that Disdukcapil Bogor Regency should further improve the discipline of its officers regarding their presence at the workplace or service counters, as well as their punctuality in serving the community, and also create a more comfortable environment and waiting area for the public accessing services.
