Data was collected from classroom observations and a questionnaire. Tarone’s (1980) taxonomy of CS was used in this descriptive-qualitative analysis. The results showed that the lecturer used language switch, literal translation, appeal-for-assistance, circumlocution, approximation and message abandonment strategies. Fillers and pauses were also used during her teaching. The students perceived that the use of CS by the lecturer helped them understand the subject better. The strategies that help them to comprehend the lecturer’s explanation better were language switch, literal translation and circumlocution strategy. The students perceived that the use of Indonesian could make understanding easier because their English was still not good.

Abstract

As people progress in life, they invariably come into contact with other people. One place where intercultural communication can occur is on the Internet, and in particular on online forums. One of these forums is MYSTcommunity.com, a discussion forum specifically created for fans of the computer game Myst to discuss developments in this series as well as anything related to it. This study shows that intercultural communication does not always result in failure. The identity of the female members perfectly represents how culture can be acted and not just referred to. By making use of their situational discourse system, in particular face systems and strategies, as well as their community of practice, they produced communication that spoke for themselves, their identity, and how they should be perceived. The female members are aware that what they do represents what they are, and so they made use of the cultural tools in their discourse system and communities of practice to show the best way to participate. As a result, they do not come off as being misunderstood; instead, they made themselves understandable; they created communication that bridged their perceptions with the others, making the communication successful.

Abstract

The existence of translation has broadened people's knowledge. People can acquire information about other countries' cultures easily, especially by reading novels. However, in the translation process, particularly in literary translation, translators may encounter some problems since translator must maintain the beauty of the source text in the target text. This research aims to find out what problems are encountered and how the problems are solved. In the process of translation of this novel, I encountered two main types of problems, namely problem in understanding and problem in transfer, but apparently, I also encountered problems both in understanding and transfer. The problems that I found were in the form of word, phrase, and clause. There were some ways that I took to solve the problems, such as looking up an online dictionary, searching on websites, and asking my advisors. To get a better understanding of the terms that I wanted to translate, I entered a keyword on Google and browse the image or watched the film which was adapted from this novel.

Abstract

This research discusses the intertextual study of the novel Canting written by Arswendo Atmowiloto and another novel with the same title by Fissilmi Hamida. The basis for the intertext study is the life philosophical background differences and similarities possessed by the characters in the two novels. This research is descriptive qualitative research, and the object of research are all quotations related to the philosophical background of the characters in the novels. Data collection is carried out with content analysis. Data analysis techniques in this study were carried out in the following steps, (1) data collection, (2) data reduction, (3) data presentation, and (4) drawing conclusions. The results of the analysis show that there is a slight relationship between the novel by Arswendo Atmowiloto (as the hypogram) and the novel Canting by Fissilmi Hamida (as the transformation) when viewed from the life philosophical background of the characters. In this case, the philosophical background of the characters is based on the main foundations of the Javanese philosophy of life, namely (1) divinity conscious awareness and (2) conscious awareness of human existence which emphasizes human relationships with others. Thus, intertextually the novel by Fissilmi Hamida is a deviant transformation of its hypogram, the novel by Arswendo Atmowiloto.
