Abstract

Translation is a process that is almost unavoidable for both lecturers and students. This is true especially in writing scientific papers that must be written in English. The purpose of this study is to find out the grammatical errors present in the translation of abstracts. The data for this study were obtained from the abstracts written by non-English students of Dian Nuswantoro University. This analysis is qualitative research in nature. As for calculating the number of grammatical errors, quantitative methods were used. In this case, qualitative descriptive analysis in this study was a method that aimed to describe or provide an overview of an object of study investigated through samples or data that have been collected. The finding of this study revealed that some grammatical errors still occur including addition, omission and misinformation.

Abstract

Setelah peserta didik mendapatkan materi terkait penjurubahasaan, analisis teks, pembelajaran mengenai strategi penerjemahan, dan penjelasan mengenai penjurubahasaan konsekutif dan simultan seperti yang disampaikan oleh Russell, Shaw, dan Malcolm (2010, dalam Herring dan Swabey 2017), dosen melibatkan seluruh mahasiswa secara bergantian untuk melakukan role play. Role play disampaikan oleh Beard dan Wilson (2013, dalam Herring dan Swabey 2017) sebagai bentuk pembelajaran lewat pengalaman yang dapat membantu pemecahan masalah dan membuat peserta didik menjadi lebih menyadari serta memahami hal yang sedang dipelajari. Pada latihan role play yang telah dilakukan, menggunakan teks berjudul “Conferences Night at an Elementary School” dari modul yang disusun oleh dosen. File rekaman latihan tersebut dibuat transkrip kemudian dianalisis untuk mengetahui jenis strategi penjurubahasaan konsekutif yang digunakan dan mengetahui tingkat efektivitas strategi penerjemahan yang digunakan. Transkrip rekaman memiliki 27 data bahasa sumber dan bahasa sasaran dari hasil analisis ditemukan bahwa sebagian besar data tuturan bahasa sumber sudah tersampaikan dengan baik ke dalam tuturan bahasa sasaran, namun beberapa data tidak berhasil memiliki hasil yang maksimal dalam penyampaiannya.

Abstract

Penggunaan bahasa Indonesia dalam makalah bagi mahasiswa merupakan pengetahuan yang harus dikuasai dengan baik. Dengan pengetahuan ini, maka mahasiswa Administrasi Niaga Politeknik dapat menulis karya tulis dengan baik dan benar. Tujuan dari penelitian ini, secara umum ingin memperoleh gambaran tentang penggunaan Bahasa Indonesia dalam karya tulis mahasiswa angkatan tahun 2017 di Jurusan Administrasi Niaga Politeknik Negeri Malang. Secara khusus bertujuan ingin mengetahui kemampuan tentang penulisan Ejaan yang disempurnakan (EYD), penulisan kalimat efektif dan penggunaan paragraf dalam makalah. Penelitian ini mengambil populasi mahasiswa angkatan tahun 2017 jurusan Administrasi Niaga Politeknik Negeri Malang. Setiap kelas masing-masing di ambil 10 orang untuk mewakilinya. Data analisis secara deskriptif kualitatif diperoleh hasil rata-rata, peneliti dapat menyimpulkan bahwa mahasiswa apabila menulis harus menguasai terlebih dahulu tema atau judul yang akan ditulis dalam makalah. Setelah itu, juga harus menguasai cara penggunaan Bahasa Indonesia dengan baik dan benar.

Abstract

Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone is one of the successful movie adaptations from a famous novel by J.K Rowling which has been translated into 80 languages worldwide. Because of this success the research conducted focuses on analysis of the subtitles. The procedures to collect the data, the researcher used several steps: finding, observing, and analyzing. Finding the movie script as the material, observing the subtitling strategies that are used by translator in the movie and analyzing the strategies that are found in the subtitles. The methods used was descriptive analysis on Indonesian script as the material taken from extracted subtitles from the DVD and had been analyzed using Henrik Gottlieb theory. The aims of the research to analyze the subtitling strategies which applied in English- Indonesian subtitles in the “Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone” movie by the translator. The subtitling strategies that the researcher used are the one from Gottlieb’s theory, where they are expansion, paraphrase, transfer, imitation, transcription, dislocation, condensation, decimation, deletion, and resignation. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach to describe the results of the analysis of subtitling strategies, the object of this research is “Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone” movie subtitle. Percentage of the strategies that occurred in the English-Indonesian subtitles were transfer 72.8%, paraphrase 16.7%, imitation 0.29%, transcription 0.19%, decimation 0.18%, deletion 0.30% was found in Indonesian subtitle of “Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone” and transfer is one of the strategies which mostly applied by the translator.

Abstract

In order to attract the foreign visitors of churches in Malang, the development of English version of the Diocese of Malang is created. To develop it, the researcher used the modified Design and Development Research steps by Borg and Gall. The steps are Research and Information Collection, Product Development, Expert Validation, Revision and Evaluation, Try Out the Product/Field Testing, Revision and Evaluation, and Final Product. The product is resulted to be Diocese of Malang website, complete with its English version. The English version result had been validated, and had been assessed by an expert and several respondents in the validation process and field testing. Both of the assessments process showed that the product could be used. The suggestions from the expert validation and field testing also had been received for the revision. The researcher suggested the Diocese of Malang to provide some pictures in the articles so that it would not look boring. The researcher also suggested for future researcher to take part in translating the remaining contents of Diocese of Malang since the researcher could not translate all the contents in the website due to time limit.

Abstract

This study discussed Developing a bilingual guidebook for Southern Beaches in Malang. This research used was the Design and Development Research method with the procedures of Analysis, Product Design, Product Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. According to the expert validator, there were some inputs, namely, to paraphrase some of the results of the translation which still sounded like Indonesian when read. There were still some problems in the use of passive sentences and some input in the design of the guidebook, which included the use of spaces and layout on the product guidebook. According to visitors, the guidebook provided complete and precise information, but there was some room for improvement, namely, to develop the design of the guidebook further to attract readers. The result of this research was that the bilingual guidebook about seven interesting and popular beaches. The purpose of this research was to develop the guidebook and help promote those beaches to the people. Besides that, the guidebook also gave detailed information about those seven beaches to local and foreign tourists who want to visit the beaches.

Abstract

Annotated translation research is type of research which describes the translation process of a document with the problem along with its solutions by giving some notes. The object of this research is a book titled “A Little Princess” by Frances Hodgson Burnett, which translated by the researcher. This research aims to: 1. elaborate on the researcher’s difficulties during translating the novel, 2. find out the strategies which are used by the researcher to solve the problem. The researcher uses introspective and retrospective methods in this research. There were twenty sixth of difficulties found. All the difficulties found consisted of twelve words, eleven phrases, and four clauses. All the problems then were solved by employing both semantic and pragmatic strategies. The researcher only takes ten strategies namely; information change, paraphrase strategy, abstraction changes, distribution change, emphasis change, semantic changes, synonymy, explicitness change, hyponymy strategy. These research findings were beneficial especially for novel translators and the students of D3 Program in Applied English in State Polytechnic of Malang. The findings were used to give the solutions of problems during translation process.
Developing a Mini Bilingual Encyclopedia of Ethnic Cuisine in East Java Salsabila Farahdiba Arofah

Abstract

In this study, the author uses the DDR research design from Richey and Klein 2013 because it focuses on the development and validation of a product so that it is very relevant to the research conducted by the author. This research design involves five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. As well as in this study, the authors used interviews, questionnaires, and observation. The result of this research is a mini bilingual encyclopedia of ethnic cuisines in East Java which contains 25 kinds of ethnic cuisines in 17 cities/districts in East Java. The contents of the encyclopedia include an introduction, a guide to using the encyclopedia, a table of contents, a bibliography, a brief description and geographic map of East Java, and a description of each ethnic cuisine, including (name, origin, history, main ingredient, shop), pictures of each cuisine, and QR code feature that can directly connect to the YouTube that shows additional information about ethnic cuisines. This product is available in two languages, Indonesian and English, so that young Indonesians and foreigners/international students can access this product. The final result is that the mini bilingual encyclopedia of ethnic cuisines in East Java is presented in two versions, namely the printed encyclopedia and e-book, making it easy for the respondents to access this encyclopedia effectively according to their wishes. Therefore, this product received positive responses from various respondents regarding the quality of the encyclopedia, which has greatly helped them in getting to know the ethnic cuisines in East Java.

Abstract

Wisata Agro Wonosari is one of the agro-tourism places with tea gardens located in one of the districts in Malang, namely Lawang. Wisata Agro Wonosari has very superior potential with the tea. The tea garden, under at the foot of Mount Arjuna, has become one of the icons for Wisata Agro Wonosari, which is attractive for both foreign and local tourists to come and feel the cool air that does not exist in the hustle and bustle of the city. The promotion of Wisata Agro Wonosari is quite lacking because there is still lack of information about Wisata Agro Wonosari, so people's interest in visiting to Wisata Agro Wonosari is decreased. Therefore, the writer developed bilingual promotional booklets and websites to attract public interest and appeal again. This research aims to at creating a bilingual promotional booklet and website about Wisata Agro Wonosari. This final project uses the DDR (Design and Development Research) method. The writer uses Richey and Kelin's research types methodology, that is, DDR (Design and Development Research), which consist of several steps namely: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Respondents of this study were visitors from Wisata Agro Wonosari. The two products that have been made, namely booklets and websites, have received positive responses from visitors.

Abstract

The writer translated 6,933 words from the novel. There are 81 problems that were grouped into 3 categories namely problems in understanding, transferring, and understanding and transferring. There are 27 problems in understanding, 37 problems in transferring, and 17 problems in understanding and transferring. There are 25 sentences containing problems analyzed. The writer used Baker’s translation strategies to solve those problems. The result revealed that not all of the translation strategies were used for analysis. From 8 strategies, there are 7 translation strategies used namely translation by a more general word (4 problems), translation by a more neutral/less expressive word (1 problem), translation by cultural substitution (1 problems), translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation (3 problems), translation by paraphrase using related words (11 problems), translation by paraphrase using unrelated words (6 data), and translation by omission (1 data). The strategy of translation by illustration was not used in the analysis.
