The problems that I found were in the form of words, phrases, and clauses. There were some ways that I took to solve the problems, such as looking up online dictionaries, searching on websites, and asking my advisors. Moreover, to get a better understanding of the terms that I wanted to translate, I entered a keyword on Google and browse the image or watched the film which was adapted from this novel.

Abstract

Pragmatics is a branch of linguistics whose focus is on meaning expressed by speakers or writers and interpreted by listeners or readers. The benefit of learning a language through pragmatics is that one can speak words about the meaning intended by others. This will be very interesting if the analysis material used is a humor book. The reason for the author to choose humor books as the material to study was to enrich research related to humor discourse. This paper describes the results of a pragmatic analysis of the implied meaning (implicature) as found in the book Humor Politik Indonesia. This study adopted a descriptive qualitative method. The result indicates that the implicatures in the book are expressing satire, expressing request, expressing annoyance, expressing suggestion, expressing reports, rejecting, misleading, mocking, concluding, and criticizing.

Abstract

This article focuses on Agustin, an English teacher who is currently teaching listening and speaking skills in Indonesia. Knowing that the new curriculum limits her chance to teach listening, Agustin needs a new idea to prepare her students for the listening section in UN. I believe that adapting listening tactics (Goh, 2002) in the teaching and learning of listening activities is one way to overcome Agustin’s problem. To explain my arguments briefly, I would firstly describe Agustin’s problem. Then, I will address the problem by reviewing some literature related to listening tactics in which I believe could help her. Lastly, I will put the literature into Agustin’s context so that she could determine which tactics are suitable to teach.
