Abstract

Rock Climbing is becoming increasingly popular among university students. The Jonggring Salaka Nature Lovers’ Student Rock Climbing Division of Malang State University actively delegates athletes to various competitions. The division's existence is less well-known to the public. This occurs due to the lack of an independent visual identity. This study aims to design a representative visual identity as a promotional medium for the division. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative approach. The design process applies the Alina Wheeler model. This model includes research, strategy, identity design, contact points, and asset management stages. The researcher collected data through observation, interviews, and literature studies. The researcher used a SWOT analysis to formulate a design strategy. The design yields a new visual identity comprising a logo, Sport Lane typography, and a color palette of red, black, and white. The logo combines the shapes of Mount Semeru, a carabiner, a carmantel rope, and a star. The researcher applied these visual elements to various promotional media. These media include jerseys, water bottles, stickers, identity cards, and social media templates. The researcher also compiled a visual identity guidebook to maintain design consistency. This visual identity serves as a strategic solution to enhance the community's image and presence in the future.

Abstract

This study examines the visual transformation of the Jatayu symbol in contemporary typeface design as an effort to translate cultural symbols into a communicative and character-driven letterform system. Jatayu was selected because of its strong symbolic meaning as a representation of bravery, sacrifice, loyalty, and struggle, as well as its rich visual potential for typographic development. The study responds to the limited integration of cultural symbols into typographic systems, as culture-based design practices often remain at a decorative level rather than being conceptually and structurally embedded in letterform design. It aims to explain how a cultural symbol can be transformed into a coherent and communicative typeface with conceptual legitimacy in contemporary design practice. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach with a practice-based design orientation. Data were collected through document study, visual observation, and artifact analysis of the “Jatayu” typeface and were analyzed using descriptive visual analysis. The findings show that the Jatayu symbol, particularly its wing element, was transformed through formal abstraction into pointed accents, dynamic curves, and rhythmic strokes that construct a heroic, firm, and elegant visual character while maintaining readability and systemic consistency.

Abstract

The transformation of local cultural elements into contemporary design media represents a strategic effort to sustain regional visual identity. This study aims to examine the process of transforming the Lampung script visually into contemporary Latin typography through the design of a typeface based on local cultural identity. The research adopts a qualitative approach using a case study method focused on the design of the “Lampung Latin” typeface, with emphasis on analyzing the visual characteristics of the Lampung script, the exploration of Latin letterforms, and the interpretation of design as a representation of cultural identity. The primary data were derived from the study of Lampung script forms, visual explorations of letterforms, and the resulting typeface design. The findings indicate that the visual characteristics of the Lampung script, particularly its curved strokes, rhythmic forms, and organic qualities, can be transformed into Latin letterforms without compromising legibility. This transformation results in a contemporary typographic style that retains local nuances through the refinement of proportions, stroke flow, and adaptive form expression. Beyond functioning as a medium of visual communication, the designed typeface also represents Lampung cultural identity within a modern design context. These findings confirm that typography can function as an active medium for cultural preservation, not only in a documentary sense but also as a communicative, applicable, and relevant form within contemporary visual design practices.
