Abstract

Bali, as one of the provinces in Indonesia, possesses a unique and diverse cultural richness, including Balinese script as an important element within it. However, the traditional use of Balinese script faces challenges in the modern era. This research aims to design a Latin typeface font that has the visual characteristics of Balinese script as an innovative effort to support the implementation of Bali Governor Regulation Number 80 of 2018 concerning the Protection and Use of Balinese Language, Script, and Literature, as well as the Organization of the Balinese Language Month. The design of this typeface is based on the need to expand the reach of Balinese script, increase cultural awareness, and facilitate its use in modern contexts, while also supporting the local creative industry. Visual Communication Design plays a crucial role in this process by studying the concepts of visual communication and the expression of creative power through graphic design elements. The result of this research is the creation of a typeface named "Baliniki" font, inspired by two words: Bali, which represents the Bali region itself, and Niki in Balinese, which means "This." Thus, the Baliniki typeface is expected to further popularize Balinese script.

Abstract

This article highlights significant changes in Javanese society, particularly among Generation Z and Alpha, who are increasingly distancing themselves from traditional cultural values due to the influence of modern culture. In this context, the author created a painting titled "Reinterpretation of Javanese Culture in Painting: Perspectives of Generations Z and Alpha" with the aim of exploring and reinterpreting Javanese culture, using an interdisciplinary approach that links the cultural values of the past with the realities of today's younger generation, represented by traditional batik motifs combined with Lego robot action figures in a decorative style, using the sungging technique for visualization, thus creating a work that has new and more meaningful values. The creation method used refers to L.H. Chapman, encompassing three stages: 1) the emergence of an idea; 2) elaboration; 3) visualization. The resulting work, titled "Pembelajaran" (Learning) (2024), uses acrylic paint on a 100 x 120 cm canvas. It is hoped that this work can inspire and raise awareness about the importance of preserving local cultural heritage amid the highly dynamic currents of technological and social change.

Abstract

This study analyzes visual representation in a documentary video about Vincent van Gogh through the lens of deconstructionist semiotics and visual communication design principles, with particular focus on the application of Dadaist style and experimental typography. The research is motivated by the crucial role of design consistency in effectively conveying symbolic messages through visual media. Employing qualitative methods, the study examines characteristic Dadaist elements such as collage, random image fragments, and unconventional typography in expressing a narrative of rebellion. Findings indicate that the opening bumper successfully creates a "rebel" impression through deliberately chaotic visual composition, while stylistic inconsistencies in the credit titles diminish overall visual integrity. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of harmonious integration between Dadaist aesthetics and narrative messaging to achieve effective and meaningful visual communication design.

Abstract

This study explores the creation of the Ringgit Bali font, a typeface inspired by the visual elements of traditional Balinese ceremonial offerings, particularly Lamak. Employing a practice-based research approach, the study investigates how the aesthetic values and philosophical meanings embedded in Balinese culture can be translated into letterforms with distinctive characteristics. The research aims to uncover the visual potential of Lamak and adapt it into a type design that not only represents Balinese cultural identity but also serves diverse design applications, including branding, visual identity, and promotional media. The font development process involved form analysis of Lamak, typographic experimentation, and legibility testing to ensure that the resulting design possesses both artistic value and functional usability in visual communication design. Visual data of Lamak were collected through direct observation and documentation studies. The final outcomes of this research include the Ringgit Bali typeface and a documentation book detailing the font creation process, form exploration, and its application across various design contexts.

Abstract

Kelingking Beach is one of the most well-known tourist attractions in the Nusa Penida Island region of Bali. Known for its iconic view of cliffs shaped like a pinky finger, which simultaneously becomes the main attraction of this beach's beauty. Although it is already well-known among tourists, the uniqueness and popularity of Kelingking Beach still require ongoing promotion to prevent it from being overshadowed by other tourist destinations on this Island of the Gods. The purpose of designing this promotional video is to help promote the Kelingking Beach tourist attraction more intensively through dissemination on various social media platforms. The design of this promotional video uses a research method that applies data collection techniques such as direct observation at the location, interviews with sources active at Kelingking Beach, and gathering library data and documentation about this tourist attraction. The data obtained is used as a reference basis in the creation of the video design concept and its supporting media. The result of this design is a narrative promotional video about a trip to Kelingking Beach with a duration of 05:58 minutes for YouTube. The content is persuasive, not only conveying visual beauty but also applying principles of visual communication design, aiming to influence public interest through a series of unique experiences on the journey to Kelingking Beach. The other design outputs are seven promotional support media in the form of t-shirt illustration designs, stickers, pins, video thumbnails, instastories, websites, and short videos for Instagram and Facebook reels, YouTube shorts.

Abstract

Alit Kumala Dewi's "Memories of the Creativity" poster is a powerful visual response to the shifting meaning of creativity in the posthuman era, where artificial intelligence (AI) technology is beginning to redefine creative processes that were previously closely tied to human experience. By combining the image of an old man with closed eyes, a collage of manual art activities, and the symbolism of AI invasion in a contrasting visual composition, the poster highlights the existential tension between the memory of traditional creativity and the new, increasingly digitalized reality. This work is not only an aesthetic statement, but also a philosophical reflection on the changing role of humans in artistic creation. This article analyzes the poster using a theoretical approach based on the concepts of posthumanity, simulacra, creative nostalgia, and a critique of cultural automation. Through an in-depth reading, it is revealed how the poster functions as a social critique and a contemplative invitation to the position of humans in the creative landscape of the future.

Abstract

This research aims to design merchandise as a promotion strategy for the Double Degree band using the Design Thinking approach of Tim Brown and David Kelley, which includes the empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test stages. Merchandise is positioned not only as a selling product, but also as a promotional medium and identity symbol that strengthens the emotional connection between the band and the fans. Visual consistency through style guides is important to maintain uniformity of elements such as logos, colours, and mascots. The design process is focused on understanding the needs of the audience and creating relevant creative solutions so that the resulting designs are attractive, functional, and able to expand the band's market reach and exposure organically, as well as being an additional source of income for indie bands in Indonesia.

Abstract

The development of 3D animated movies has adapted visual elements of comics, such as motion lines and speed lines, into digital media, but there has been no study that combines visual semiotics, narrative functions, and the transformation of comic styles into 3D animated movies. The purpose of this study is to map the semiotic mechanisms and dramatic functions of motion lines and speed lines through case studies of three movies, including Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022), and The Bad Guys (2022). The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach: visual semiotics analysis to unravel denotative and connotative meanings, as well as narrative analysis to map the effects' contribution to the rhythm, conflict, and climax of the story. The results show that motion lines and speed lines operate in two ways: as markers of movement that communicate kinetic intensity, and as narrative devices that reinforce dramatic rhythm and audience affect. These effects also create an aesthetic hybridity between comics and cinema, providing an additional layer of interpretation that enhances affective engagement and dramatic understanding. This research provides theoretical and practical contributions to the study of visual semiotics and digital animation narrative design.
