Abstract

The objective of this study is to ascertain the sustainability of tomato farming in Sidamangura Village, Kusambi District, West Muna Regency. The present study was based on the information provided by 58 tomato farmers residing in Sidamangura Village. The informants were selected deliberately, resulting in a total of six informants. The data were collected using a combination of methods, including observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews with interview guides. The focal point of this study was the sustainability of tomato farming. The subsequent analysis of the data was conducted using qualitative analysis methods. The findings indicated that tomato farming in Sidamangura Village possesses the capacity to persist, despite the presence of variations across various dimensions. In the ecological dimension, sustainability is indicated by the low potential for pests and diseases and the use of fertilizers. However, the use of pesticides is a hindering factor. In the economic dimension, sustainability is supported by income and market access, while production factors continue to encounter challenges. Concurrently, within the social dimension, sustainability is bolstered by factors such as the level of education, the productive age of farmers, and the involvement of families. The sustainability of farming is influenced by ecological and economic factors, as well as the social role of farming families. The sustainability of tomato farming in rural areas is contingent upon a number of social factors, with particular emphasis on the role of family participation.

Abstract

Strong social capital is key to increasing the empowerment of farmers and the effectiveness of farmer groups in facing various structural challenges in the agricultural sector, including weak institutional capacity, land fragmentation, and low levels of trust at the rural level. This study aims to determine the level of farmers' social capital, the role of farmer groups, and the relationship between social capital and the role of farmer groups in the development of rice farmers in Kasumeia Village, Konawe Regency. The population size of each farmer group varied, so the sample size was determined using purposive sampling. Three farmers were selected as samples from each farmer group, consisting of the farmer group leader, an active farmer, and a passive farmer. A total of nine farmers were selected as respondents for the study, three farmers from each farmer group. Data collection for the research was carried out using several methods, namely a survey method using questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The variables in this study included social capital and the role of farmer groups. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis methods. The results showed that the social capital of farmers in Kasumeia Village was relatively high, particularly in terms of trust, social networks, and social norms or values. Farmer groups in Kasumeia Village have played a significant role as learning classes and vehicles for cooperation. However, the role of groups as production units still faces challenges in terms of resource management efficiency, market access, and information distribution. There is a significant (0.005) and strong (0.681) relationship between farmers' social capital and the role of farmer groups. Social capital such as trust, norms, and networks has proven to be a determining factor that strengthens cooperation and the effectiveness of farmer group functions. However, despite this strong relationship, the implementation of farmer group functions has not been fully maximized because there are still members who participate only to a limited extent.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to ascertain the correlation between farmers' work motivation and their performance in Iwoikondo Village, Loea District, East Kolaka Regency. The population of this study comprised all rice farmers residing in Iswaikondo Village, Loea District, East Kolaka Regency. It is noteworthy that the population of farmers in Iswaikondo Village, Loea Subdistrict, is comprised of nine farmer groups, with each group consisting of 25 farmers, thereby yielding a total of 225 rice farmers. The sample size was determined using the Slovin formula with a margin of error of 15%, resulting in a sample size of 38 respondents. The research sample was obtained through the implementation of the proportional random sampling method. The research variables of interest were the level of motivation and the level of performance of rice farmers. The research data collected was then subjected to quantitative descriptive analysis. The results of the study indicate that the motivations of farmers in Iwoikondo Village vary, ranging from fulfilling basic needs and security of farming to social needs through farmer groups and government support. Some farmers seek recognition for their work, while others have achieved self-actualization by focusing on innovation, sustainable agriculture, and farmer regeneration. Overall, there has been a shift in motivation from basic needs to higher achievements. Farmers' performance in Iwoikondo Village varies in terms of productivity, work quality (use of seeds), and work effectiveness. Some have not yet reached production standards, while others have met or exceeded them. Most have begun to switch to high-quality seeds, though some still use local seeds. In terms of effectiveness, only a few follow the schedule on time, with the most delays occurring during harvest. To improve performance, planning, education, and better technological and agricultural management support are needed. There is a strong and significant correlation between farmers' motivation levels and their performance, with a correlation coefficient of 0.639.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to ascertain the nature of industrial partnerships in palm oil development in Lawonua Village. The informants were selected using purposive and snowball sampling techniques, resulting in a total of 22 informants consisting of six farmer group administrators, six farmer group members, four local farmers, two migrant farmers, two village officials (the village head and the village secretary), and two company staff.  The data for this study was collected through a combination of documentation review and interviews with trained interview guides. The focal point of this study encompassed the various forms of industrial partnerships and the development of palm oil. The data analysis activities encompassed data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study demonstrate that the core-plasma and general trade forms of partnership in palm oil development in Lawonua Village play a strategic role in strengthening farmers' access to land provision, production facilities, technical guidance, and market guarantees. The efficacy of palm oil development, as evidenced by the augmentation in productivity and effectiveness of palm oil farmers, has been demonstrated to be contingent upon the provision of inputs such as high-quality seeds and fertilizers, in conjunction with cultivation activities including planting, maintenance, and harvesting. The integration of the nucleus-plasma and general trading forms of partnership has resulted in a complementary collaboration model that supports the sustainability of palm oil farming.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to ascertain the extent of implementation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and the factors that influence the implementation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in horticultural farming in Aunupe Village, Wolasi District, South Konawe Regency. The population under study comprised horticultural farmers who were affiliated with farmer groups in Aunupe Village, amounting to a total of eight farmer groups and 134 members. The sample size was determined using the Slovin formula with a margin of error of 10%, resulting in a sample size of 57 farmers. The sampling technique that was employed was proportional random sampling. The present study employs a quantitative research method. The study's primary focus is on the level of implementation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and the factors that influence the implementation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). The research data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive statistical methods. Subsequent analysis was executed employing the class interval formula and simple linear regression analysis with the assistance of SPSS version 24 software. The results of the study show that the implementation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in horticultural farming in Aunupe Village, Wolasi District, South Konawe Regency is still moderate, with weaknesses in the aspects of environmental friendliness, consumption safety, and production sustainability. Factors such as age, education, land area, income, and the role of extension workers were found to significantly influence the implementation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), while experience had no significant effect. Farming experience, which has been considered important, does not appear to be a dominant factor in the implementation of Good Agricultural Practices. This condition emphasizes the need to increase farmer capacity through education, training, and extension support to accelerate the optimal adoption of Good Agricultural Practices.

Abstract

The development of hydroponic agriculture as a solution to land limitations in urban areas in Kendari City requires effective agricultural extension support, particularly through participatory, dialogic, and adaptive PPL communication patterns in order to increase farmers' capacity to adopt hydroponic technology. The objective of this study is to analyze the communication patterns exhibited by agricultural extension workers when interacting with hydroponic farmers in Wua-Wua District, Kendari City. The research population comprised all hydroponic farmers in Wua-Wua District, Kendari City. The research sample was obtained through the census method, yielding a total of 30 individuals. The data were collected through surveys, questionnaires, documentation, and literature studies. The research variable was defined as the communication patterns exhibited by agricultural extension workers. The analysis was performed using descriptive analysis. The findings indicated that the communication patterns exhibited by field agricultural extension workers (PPL) in Wua-Wua District, Kendari City, demonstrated that unidirectional communication predominantly fell within the adequate range, with limited potential for enhancement, particularly in enhancing the comprehension of hydroponic farmers. This is attributable to constrained interaction and feedback. Conversely, bidirectional and multidirectional communication exhibited a predominance of the good category, exhibiting efficacy in fostering active participation, dialogue, and contextual learning among farmers. Two-way communication patterns facilitate the exchange of information that is responsive to technical problems in the field, while multi-way communication patterns enhance social learning through collaboration between farmers and related parties, thereby supporting the improvement of understanding and the sustainable application of hydroponic technology. The efficacy of agricultural extension in urban areas is predominantly contingent upon the capacity of extension workers to employ participatory and dialogical communication methodologies.

Abstract

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth) is a high-value plantation commodity that is Indonesia's primary producer of essential oils with considerable export prospects. However, despite its cultivation in various areas, including Lambangi Village in South Konawe Regency, the management of this crop continues to face challenges, such as declining soil fertility and suboptimal farmer income. The objective of this study is to ascertain the level of interest among farmers in Lambangi Village regarding the cultivation of patchouli. The population under study comprised all 30 patchouli farmers in Lambangi Village. The sample was determined using the census method. The data were processed using the class interval formula and then analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results of the study indicate that the level of interest among farmers in Lambangi Village in cultivating patchouli is relatively high, with 86.67% of farmers falling into the "good" category. The dimensions of desire, involvement, and interest exhibited a significant contribution to farmers' decisions to continue developing patchouli farming. The findings suggest that intrinsic motivation, particularly internal drive and satisfaction with cultivation outcomes, plays a pivotal role in business sustainability. Furthermore, social interaction among farmers plays a pivotal role in enhancing knowledge transfer and fostering local innovation.

Abstract

Work motivation is a critical factor that propels fishermen in Lelamo Village to enhance their income and well-being. When motivation is high, fishermen demonstrate increased engagement in resource utilization, skill development, and innovation in addressing the challenges that impede their success. These challenges encompass various social, economic, and technical factors. The objective of this study is to ascertain the factors that motivate fishermen in Lelamo Village, Kulisusu District. The research population comprised 44 fishermen who operated fishing boats in Lelamo Village. The sample was determined using the census method. The data collection techniques employed included the use of recordings, documentation, and surveys administered via questionnaires. In addition to conducting surveys with all fishermen, the researchers conducted in-depth interviews with five key informants. The research data was analyzed using quantitative descriptive analysis. The results indicated that the primary motivations for fishermen to engage in their profession were rooted in familial and social economic needs, with a subset of fishermen also expressing personal interest and satisfaction in their occupation. Moreover, the cultural and historical legacy of Lelamo Village, the considerable potential for fishing, and the accessibility of the fishing profession are among the primary factors that influence the community's decision to pursue this occupation. The role of internal factors in the motivation of capture fishermen in Lelamo Village is of particular interest. These factors include psychological (clothing, food, shelter) and physiological (affection, self-preservation, self-strengthening) needs, which greatly influence fishermen's motivation. The majority of fishermen exhibit high levels of motivation, with a balance in the fulfillment of basic and emotional needs. This dynamic supports the welfare and productivity of capture fishermen. The role of external factors in the motivation of capture fishermen indicates that working conditions, rewards, and accountability are among the various factors that greatly influence the motivation of the community to work as capture fishermen.
