The journal is dedicated to sociological knowledge by publishing original research articles and critical review essays that address a wide range of social issues. These issues may arise from southern country, such us Asian, African, or other countries. We welcome both theoretical and empirical contributions that deepen understanding of social dynamics. Our scope includes, but is not limited to, the following sociological topics : urban and rural communities, democracy, religion, conflict, gender, family and relationships, social inclusion, culture, digital society, social development, social movements, economy, organizations, education, and epistemological perspectives unique to southern contexts.. We also accept new theoretical approaches, or new approaches in understanding social problems in the perspective of southern countries, or new methodological approaches in studying these social issues. Of course, all of that is within the framework of sociological studies

Abstract

The digitalization of the public transportation sector has opened opportunities for many citizens, including women, to become ride-hailing motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers, working flexibly as partners of a company without fixed contracts. This participation allows women to enter the public sphere through employment. However, women’s presence in the public sphere reveals multiple layers of precarity. Stemming from inadequate welfare and safety guarantees, exposure to harassment, and economic pressure under the partnership scheme for freelancers in the gig economy. This study focuses on the experiences and struggles of female ride-hailing motorcycle taxi drivers in the city of Yogyakarta as they face risks in the public sphere. It also seeks to understand the relationship between the state and corporations that shape their working conditions. This research also aims to answer two main questions. (1) How do female drivers confront multiple layers of precarity in both digital and physical publicness? (2) How are basic worker rights advocated by female ride-hailing drivers, and to what extent does this advocacy mitigate the vulnerabilities they face? These questions will be answered using qualitative methods, particularly through participatory observation and in-depth interviews. This study will contribute to the literature on women’s precarity in the freelance gig economy by highlighting the inequities in protective guarantees and public rights that should be ensured by the state. Its findings are expected to yield policy recommendations to improve protection and justice for female ride-hailing drivers as vulnerable workers in the public sphere.

Abstract

Improving the quality of human resources (HR) is an important requirement in facing the demands of the ever-evolving world of work and industry. The Sidoarjo Vocational and Productivity Training Center (BPVP) acts as a competency-based training institution in preparing a skilled and ready workforce. This study aims to analyze the experiences of instructors in improving the quality of human resources through vocational training at BPVP Sidoarjo. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive phenomenological approach based on Alfred Schutz's phenomenological theory. The research subjects include instructors from the smart creative, smart manufacturing, smart office, and cake and bakery majors. Data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews, then analyzed by tracing the instructors' motives for action, namely the because motive and the in-order-to motive. The results of the study show that instructors interpret their role not only as technical teachers but also as facilitators and mentors in shaping the competencies, work ethic, and readiness of participants. Instructors also face various social challenges during training. This study confirms that the success of improving human resource quality is greatly influenced by the ability of instructors to interpret their role and manage the social dynamics of training.

Abstract

Vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities, the elderly, women, and communities with limited access often face greater risks when disasters occur. This study aims to analyze the role of the Village Disaster Preparedness Team (TSBD) in involving vulnerable groups in disaster risk reduction activities at the village level. Therefore, their involvement in the disaster management system is an important aspect in building community resilience. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with VDRT members, village officials, and vulnerable groups, field observations, and analysis of village disaster documents. The results show that the VDRT plays an active role in involving vulnerable groups through various mechanisms, such as village discussion forums, direct invitations to disaster activities, and their involvement in the VDRT organizational structure. In addition, vulnerable groups are also involved in the process of preparing village disaster documents so that their needs and perspectives can be accommodated in disaster mitigation planning. The findings of this study indicate that the involvement of vulnerable groups is not only symbolic but also provides a space for participation that allows them to contribute according to their capacities and abilities.
