Abstract

This study investigated the production of akamu from sorghum grains and assessed the effect of prolonged fermentation on its nutritional value. Sorghum grains were purchased from Gwallameji market, Bauchi, and processed into akamu using traditional methods involving steeping, wet milling, sieving, sedimentation, and fermentation for six days. Proximate analysis was conducted on raw sorghum grains and fermented akamu samples at days 0, 2, 4, and 6. Microbiological analysis was performed to identify bacteria and fungi present during fermentation. Results showed that prolonged fermentation led to a decrease in protein content (from 4.03% to 2.28%), crude fiber (4.50% to 1.50%), crude lipid (6.40% to 3.30%), and ash content (3.00% to 1.00%), while moisture (1.50% to 5.50%) and carbohydrate (80.57% to 87.22%) increased. The pH dropped significantly from 6.6 to 3.9 after three days. Isolated microorganisms included Staphylococcus aureus (1.85 × 10⁴ cfu/ml), Escherichia coli (1.01 × 10⁴ cfu/ml), Saccharomyces spp (2.45 × 10⁴ cfu/ml), and Aspergillus spp (1.07 × 10⁴ cfu/ml). The presence of E. coli indicated fecal contamination, likely from water used during processing. The study concluded that fermentation beyond 2-3 days reduces nutritional quality and increases spoilage risk. Fortification with protein-rich supplements and improved sanitary practices during production are recommended.

Abstract

With the title "Harnessing Technologies for Efficiency and Safety in Placer and Open Pit Mining Operations in Jos South, Plateau State, Nigeria," this study investigates how incorporating contemporary technology can solve persistent issues with conventional mining methods. Identifying current practices, evaluating related risks, and assessing the potential of contemporary technological interventions to enhance sector outcomes were the objectives of the study. Quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews were combined in a mixed-methods approach. Out of a population of over 500.000.440 questionnaires were distributed, and 294 valid responses (67% response rate) were obtained, yielding a sample size of 400 using Yamane's (1967) formula.  Findings revealed that traditional and semi-mechanized methods dominate, with over 80% of miners depending on manual labor or diesel power machinery. Such practices contribute to inefficiency, environmental degradation, and frequent hazards, including pit collapses, electrocution, drowning, and injuries from falling rocks. Despite these risks, more than half of respondents strongly supported the adoption of modern technologies, and 55% of respondents said they were aware of them. Among the proposed innovations are wearable safety devices, real-time hazard detection systems, automated equipment, drones for monitoring, GIS mapping, and renewable energy sources like solar-powered machinery. The study comes to the conclusion that adopting technology to modernize mining is essential for increasing productivity, guaranteeing worker safety, and fostering environmental sustainability

Abstract

There may be substantial differences in the qualities and characteristics of coconut oil that is extracted from various sources and using various techniques.  The extraction of coconut oil and its use in the manufacturing of bar soap are the main topics of this study. The objective was to create an effective oil extraction method and assess the physicochemical characteristics of the oil for use in soap production. The saponification value, acid value, free fatty acid content, and moisture level of coconut oil were measured after it was extracted using N-hexane as a solvent.  The oil produced by the extraction process had good qualities that made it suitable for making soap, such as a high saponification value (256.96%), a low acid value (0.35), and a pleasant odor. Coconut oil was extracted using the Soxhlet method, and cold process soap was made with sodium hydroxide, distilled water, and fragrance additives. In order to create a stable soap with good lathering, the process was optimized. Scent, as well as toughness. The study concludes by showing that coconut oil is a feasible raw material for making high-quality soap, supporting both economic viability and environmental sustainability. Recommendations include investigating natural additions to improve soap compositions and improving extraction techniques to increase oil quality

Abstract

The Fourth Industrial Revolution and the demands of 21st-century education require prospective physics teachers to master not only content knowledge but also creativity, digital literacy, and the pedagogical ability to design technology-integrated instruction. This article presents a systematic literature review examining the development of an interactive web-based physics learning material model integrated with the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics – Project-based Learning (STEM-PjBL) approach to improve the creativity of prospective student teachers. Following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) protocol, 1,036 records were identified from Scopus, SINTA/Garuda, and Google Scholar; after duplicate removal, screening, and eligibility assessment, 20 primary studies published between 2019 and 2026 were included in the qualitative synthesis, supported by more than 30 additional theoretical and methodological references. The review indicates that STEM-PjBL-based interactive web media consistently produce valid, practical, and effective learning products that significantly enhance fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration—the four core dimensions of creativity—among learners and prospective teachers. Development research models such as ADDIE, 4D, and Borg and Gall R&D dominate the methodological landscape, while assessment instruments largely draw on the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT) framework. The review concludes that an interactive web-based STEM-PjBL model is a promising, empirically supported strategy for cultivating prospective physics teachers' creativity and recommends further experimental validation across diverse teacher-education contexts.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of formative assessment teaching strategy on students' achievement and retention in chemistry. A quasi-experimental non-randomized control group design was used in carrying out the research. Intact class number of eighty-six (86) senior secondary one (SS1) students which were randomly sampled from the population that were involved in the study. The study covered all the public secondary schools in Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State. There are three research questions and three hypotheses guiding this study. The main instrument for data collection was Chemistry Achievement Test (CAT). The CAT were developed by the researchers from past West African Examination Council (WAEC) question papers to ensures content validity. The instrument (CAT) was validated by our supervisor, two chemistry lecturers and measurements and evaluation experts in Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe. The instrument was tested and data collected was used for the test reliability estimate of (0.85) using Pearson Product Moment. Lesson plans were used as instructional tools. The data generated from the study were analyzed using mean and standard deviation and analysis of z-test. The result from the data analyzed showed that students taught using formative assessment (experimental group) achieved better than those in expository method (control group) and there was a significant difference in the students' achievement; Gender was not a significant factor in the overall achievement of students taught using formative assessment although the male students tends to show more achievement capacity than their female counterparts. Based on the findings, a conclusion was made and recommendations proffered, that the use of formative assessment teaching strategy should be adopted as an effective strategy for teaching chemistry. Hence, Educational implication and suggestion for further studies were made based on the findings
