Folia Medica Indonesiana, as indicated by its name, focuses on publishing good quality articles about research and education on health science and medicine in Indonesia. However, due to the fast growth of science and knowledge in these fields, we also welcome submitted articles from around the world, especially the ones that contain related matters from lower-middle income countries. Folia Medica Indonesiana is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal that is published online at least four times a year. The scope covers various aspects of basic medical sciences includes anatomy, physiology, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, and molecular medicine) and clinical medicine (covers specialties like internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, oncology, psychiatry, etc). We highlight the pathology and potential treatment of metabolic syndromes and infectious diseases. Folia Medica Indonesiana also encourages the publication of articles about health education. The scope includes, but is not limited to, articles that emphasize on preventive education on certain diseases in a community, also research report of various materials and/or methods to develop medical education. We recognize the importance of this type of articles to be published alongside the assigned topic in each of our yearly issues, to provide our readers with updated information in medical sciences’ research and education simultaneously.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a type of a degenerative disorder that affects the body's ability to make or use insulin. The resistance of insulin may affect the decline of GLUT-1 expression of diabetic muscle, causing impaired glucose uptake. Dynamic concentric activity is one of the activity models based on muscle-contraction-type activity. This study used experimental method. The instrument in this study was a treadmill (brand: modified columbus treadmill) with 10-degree slope (uphill), with the velocity of 21 cm/sec (the speed options showed on the treadmill), and the duration of the exercise was 16 minutes and 30 seconds (measured using stopwatch). In this study, there were 3 groups of samples, Normal (K0), DM (K1), and DM + Dynamics Concentric (K2). Based on statistical results of correlation value p=0.00 (p<0.05), there was significant correlation between blood sugar level and GLUT-1. Dynamic concentric activity for diabetics had an effect in increasing the amount of GLUT-1, resulting in decreased blood glucose levels.

Abstract

Nephrotic syndrome is a condition which is characterized by protein leakage from the blood to the urine through glomeruli. It leads to hypoproteinemia and generalised oedema. Patients with nephrotic syndrome need high dose and long term glucocorticoid such as prednisone. High dose and long term glucocorticoid can increase bone resorption. Biological marker is a valuable tool to evaluate efficacy of therapy. TRAP 5B is a sensitive biological marker for bone resorption because it reflects the number of osteoclasts. TRAP 5B is not affected by renal dysfunction and food. It also has a low diurnal variation than other bone resorption marker. The aim of this study was to analyze the changes of TRAP 5B levels at induction and alternate phase in children with steroid sensitive nephrotic syndrome. This observational prospective study was conducted from May to October 2016. Venous blood samples obtained at 08.00-10.00 am. TRAP5B levels were measured before and after induction phase and after alternate phase using ELISA. Fifteen patients were included in this study (60% boys). Majority of their age was 6 - <12 years and 40% were dependent steroid NS. TRAP 5B serum levels in induction phase increased by 37.41%±56.22%. In alternate phase, TRAP 5B serum levels increased by 28.75%±66.55% compared to the induction phase. However, the level change of both phases were not significant. As a conclusion, TRAP 5B levels increased in induction and alternate phase after high dose and long-term prednisone treatment in nephrotic syndrome.

Abstract

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is the leading cause of male genital tract infection with no symptoms of infertility. Protein E. coli pili hemagglutinin isolated from infertile male sperm with 32.2 kDa MW acts as adhesion in spermatozoa. This study aimed to prove whether E. coli pili adhesin 32.2 kDa MW is toxic to male reproductive system. Samples consisted of spermatozoa of 30 guinea pigs divided into three groups: control, immunized with E. coli pili adhesin 32.2 kDa MW protein, and transurethral infected E. coli. Observations of sperm motility, vitality and morphology were performed under a microscope. MDA levels and sperm DNA damage were measured by a spectrophotometer and comet assay method and observed using a fluorescent microscope. There was no difference between control and immunization group of E. coli pili adhesin in motility (p=0.499), vitality (p=0.817) and morphology (p=0.176); between control and transuretral infection groups in motility (p=0.000), vitality (p=0.000) and morphology (p=0.000); and between control and both treatment groups in motility (p=0.001), vitality (p=0,000) and morphology (p=0.000). Histologic analysis showed E. coli pili adhesin of 32.2 kDa MW immunization group did not suffer from testicular tissue damage, while the positive group showed a deterioration of seminiferous tubular cells. MDA levels differed between immunization group E. coli pili, transurethral infection group, and control (p=0.024) and between transurethral and control (p=0.007) groups. However, between control and immunized group with E. coli pili protein showed no difference (p=0.251). DNA damage differed (p=0.000) between immunized group with E. coli pili, transurethral infection and control group; between control and transurethral infected group (p=0.000); and between transurethral infection group and E. coli pili protein immunization group (p=0.000). However, between control and E. coli pili immunization group showed no difference (p=0.600). In conclusion, E. coli pili adhesin 32.2 kDa MW protein is not toxic for sperm quality and the quality of sperm molecules.
