This e-Journal of Linguistics is published by the Doctoral Studies Program of Linguistics of Udayana University Postgraduate Program and colaboration with APBL (Asosiasi Peneliti Bahasa Bahasa Lokal). The existence of the e-Journal of Linguistics aims to publish the results of linguistic research in a number of sub-fields, either microlinguistics, macrolinguistics and applied linguistics. Knowledge development, updating of data, facts, theories, methods, and approaches are the goals of this journal presence. The journal is published twice a year, namely in January and July.

Abstract

This is a pre- experimental research which usedone group pre- test and post-test design. The objectiveof this research was to know the effectiveness of groupdiscussion in improving the students’ English languagelearning using group discussion. The populations ofthis research were the ninth grade students of SMPN13 Maulafa Kupang numbering 233 students. Thesamples of this research were 35 students. Thevariables of the research were the students’achievement, as depend on variable, and the use ofgroup discussion as the independent variable. Themethod of collecting data used in this research was pre-test that was given before treatment and post-test thatwas given after treatment to analyzed the data, thewriter used t-test formula. the result of the researchshowed that the score of the t-test in the first sessionwas 11.15, while in the second session was 14. Thescore of t-table for level of significant for df 34 in level0.05 is 2.30 and in level 0.01 is 2.73. After comparingthe score of t-test and t-table, it means that groupdiscussion can significantly improve the students’achievement in English speaking ability. Besides, italso can make the class active, alive, and motivatestudent to work together to develop and share ideasmore freely. The problems that make the students weredifficult in speaking was the lack of vocabularymastery.

Abstract

This research aims to 1) identify and describe the ability ofkindergarten learners in producing English dental fricatives and2) identify and describe the effect of audio-visual media forkindergarten learners’ ability in producing English dentalfricatives. This research used experimental approach with IntactGroup Comparison design. The subject of this research waskindergarten learners in Bali Star Academy. The data of thisresearch was collected through documentation method and wasanalyzed by using qualitative description. The result showed thatcontrol group had higher result compared to experiment groupduring the pre-test with 60.71% average score for the controlgroup and 17.71% average score for the experiment group. Afterthe audio-visual media applied for the experiment group, theresult changed into 76.28% average score for the experimentgroup and 67.85% for the control group.

Abstract

This paper deals with the constructions of passive andantipassive in Sasak Kuto-Kute dialect (SKD) related tovalency decrease. The study involved 70 verbs proposed byMalchukov and Comrie (2010) and applying the theory oftypology linguistics from Dixon (2012) for data analysis. Thefinding showed that passive in this dialect can appear inthree forms: the use of morphological marking (confix ke- -n), syntactic marking (preposition siq ‘by’) and no markingsat all. For the last form, the construction can only bedetected through the movements of the arguments with thecase being limited to A with singular pronouns (ku ‘I’, diq‘you’ and ia ‘s/he’), and first plural pronoun (kami ‘we’).The syntactic passive marker in SKD is very productive andmore common compared to the morphological marker. Asfor antipassive, in this dialect the construction was found tobe formed only through morphological markings, whichinvolved the use of nasal prefixes such as meny- and me- andconfix ng- -ang as the AP markers.

Abstract

The study deals with the types of maxim violation inIndonesian Lawak Klub (ILK) done by the mainspeakers. The objectives of study were to describe theviolation of maxim, to describe the dominant type ofmaxim violating and the reason of violating maxim. Thedata were the dialogue of main speakers in IndonesianLawak Club (ILK). This research was conducted usingdescriptive qualitative and focused on one episode ofcara cepat menjadi kaya. The findings showed thatthere are 70 violating of maxim of quantity, 71 violatingof maxim of quality, 144 vioalating of maxim ofrelevance, and 27 violating of maxim of manner. Thereasons of the dominant violating of maxim of relevanceare to widen discussion related to the topic and makeinteractive and atractive discussion.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the types ofillocution in the form of verbal speech acts between teachersand students in learning Indonesian language at Senior HighSchool 1- Tampaksiring, Gianyar, Bali. This study applieddescriptive qualitative analysis with the support of audio-visual recordings technique, observation methods,documentation methods that combined with pragmatics andclassification techniques. The results of the study haveshown that the types of illocution, with the order of use, aredirective function (40%), expressive (25%), assertive (20%),commissive (10%), and declarative (5%) in teacher andstudent speech acts.
