Abstract

This study describes the types of applicative constructions in Mountain Balinese (MB). It shows that applicative constructions in MB generally follow the same mechanism as those in the related languages such as Indonesian for their derivation whereby a non-core argument marked by an object NP of a preposition in the intransitive counterpart is mapped onto a core argument. It also shows that MB exhibits a property of being a symmetrical language

Abstract

This article aims at deeply explaining the languages influencing Indonesia. Indonesian stems from Malay. In its development, however, it is much influenced on the vernacular languages spoken in the Indonesian archipelago. It is shown that Indonesian has considerable influence from Javanese, ranging from lexicons to mosphosyntax. It is also shown that English as an international language inevitably influences Indonesian due to contacts

Abstract

AbstractThis research is conducting the word one in english and its equivalent in Indonesian with reference to the novel The Da Vinci Code, 2003 by Brown and its translation, 2013 by Dwijati. The word one in english has catagorized different part namely with singular by one , with plural by ones , modified with article- the, and determiner -that or -this. The catagorized of one could be found in the nominal substitution as cohesive device. The translation one in the English into Indonesian has correspodence equivalent in the text. Molina and Albier (2002:509) stated that translation techniques have five basic characteristics: they affect the result of the translation, they are classified by the comparison with the original, they affect micro-units of text, they are by nature discursive and contextual, and they are functional. The result of translation is made the equivalent between source language and targetlanguage. Based on equivalent Halliday (1976: 38) stated one as substitution is as the replacement of one item by another such as words or phrases. In line with Halliday, Renkema (1993: 38) stated that substitution is a replacement of a word (group) or sentence segment by a “dummy” word. The result in this research devided one into some types nominal substitution as one, ones, the one, this one and that one. The result of translation one can be function as nominal substitution and it?s equivalent in Indonesian.

Abstract

This study aims to answer problems that occurred as the implication of the application of strategies in translation. The first began with finding out types of translation strategies in journalistic articles. It is then followed by the analysis of how the faithfulness of the source language text was retained in the target language text. The last would be finding out the types of textual manipulation in the target language text. The object in this study is the National Geographic magazine April 2020 issue, both the English and Indonesian versions. A series of qualitative methods were employed in this study, with the library research technique used in collecting the data. This study also employed the referential method in analyzing the data and formal and informal methods in presenting the analyzed data. The result revealed that Chesterman’s translation strategies which were found in the magazine are syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic strategies. As in the case of the faithfulness of TL towards its SL in the National Geographic Indonesia April 2020 issue, it was found that the faithfulness was retained through the application of Chesterman’s syntactic strategies, as well as textual manipulation through the use of the syntactic strategies

Abstract

Abstract Balinese has two forms in relation to nasal pre xes. First, the initial segment of the verb root can be assimilated with the homorganic nasal and both coalesce. Second, the nasal pre x still assimilates with the rst segment of the verb root but forms a CC cluster. The data source of this study is Balinese dictionaries and analyzed by Optimality Theoretic (OT) so it was found that the af x nasal did not form a cluster with the rst segment of the verb root uniformly occurred in verbs where the rst segment is obstruent both voiced and voiceless while the one forming the cluster is the rst segment of a verb root which is realized by a sonorant. The rst phenomenon can be handled by the constraint * NC (obs) while the second one by violates linearity constraint, namely, Align-L (root) constraint. OT analysis also predicts that the ungrammaticality of an output verb structure ngmaang ‘to give’ due to fact that the correct underlying form baang is confused with its corresponding surface form. Keywords: nasalization, obstruent, sonorant, OT analysis Abstrak Bahasa Bali mempunyai dua bentuk dalam kaitannya dengan pre x nasal.

Abstract

This study aims at contrasting get and dapatkan covering the structure, syntactic valence, and semantic parameters. Get is analysed along with its synonym make, find, become, and understand as well as dapatkan, represented by mendapatkan, and its synonyms mencapai, menerima, menemukan, and mengambil. Dapatkan needs to transform into mendapatkan to express formality and is more frequently used than dapatkan. By using distributional and identity methods and applying the theory of verbs and their satellites and semantic parameter, this study reveals that the structures only influence the differences of the verbs’ syntactic valence whereas the meanings contribute to the similarities and differences of the verbs semantic parameters. In terms of valence get can be monovalent (S+v+AD), make is trivalent (S+v+AD+PO), find is bivalent (S+v+O), become is bivalent (S+v+ND), and understand is monovalent (S+v). Indonesian verbs, mendapatkan, mencapai, menerima, menemukan, and mengambil are all bivalent with the basic construction S+v+O. The semantic aspects are analysed by applying transitivity parameters and this is affected by the meaning and status of the verb, either state or action. Get and its synonyms show lower transitivity than dapatkan, which is represented by mendapatkan, with its synonym. The verbs presenting low degree of transitivity are get, make, find, become, understand, menerima, and menemukan, whereas the high transitivity is shown by the verbs mendapatkan, mencapai, and mengambil.

Abstract

This research aims to study news translation in magazines, specifically about textual manipulation which occurred in the National Geographic Indonesia April 2020 issue. The analysis applied the theory of translation strategies by Chesterman (2016) but only referred to the syntactic strategy. This study also applied a qualitative method and the analysis is presented descriptively. The analysis revealed the textual changes that occurred in the articles in the National Geographic Indonesia Magazine April 2020 issue. Textual manipulations are the results of the application of translation strategies which are observable through the comparison of both the translation product itself and the original text. Therefore, they can be linked with Chesterman’s syntactic strategies which are found in the data. Based on the data analysis, the following strategies were found, they are literal translation, loan or calque, transposition, unit shift, phrase structure change, clause structure change, sentence structure change, cohesion change, and level shift.

Abstract

AbstractThe study focuses on monotransitive objective-focus(OV) agents in Balinese. The evidence shown in thisstudy supports the claim that monotransitive OV agentsare subject to indefiniteness conditions. These conditionsare motivated by the fact that monotransitive OV agentsappear with verbs which are zero-marked. AV agents, onthe other hand, appear with verbs which are inherentlymarked. They are not sensitive to the condition. Nor areditransitive OV agents whose verbs get marked either viaapplicativization or causativization process. Looked at inthis way, ditransitive OV agents behave like AV agents ingeneral. OV agents contains syntactically independent NPswhich may be reduced to a bare N or expanded into a morecomplex NP, confirming that they are not analyzable as anincorporated or cliticized material.
