Abstract

Character education and akhlaq formation constitute foundational dimensions of Islamic moral pedagogy, yet their actualization within pesantren-based learning environments remains insufficiently examined in the existing literature. This study investigates the relationship between character values and akhlaq formation in the learning process at Al-Amin Al-Khidary Pesantren, Rajun Pasongsongan, Madura, Indonesia, with particular attention to how character education values are actualized through the Tarbiyatul Ta'lim Al-Islamiyah (TTI) instructional framework. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. Data validity was ensured through triangulation, while analysis followed systematic stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that akhlaq learning at Al-Amin Al-Khidary is implemented through two complementary channels. Within the classroom, moral education is delivered through classical texts including Bidayatul Hidayah and At-Tafsir, providing students with a structured foundation in Islamic ethical principles. Beyond the classroom, akhlaq formation is reinforced through structured extracurricular activities encompassing Khutbatul Tholib, pilgrimage, Muhadloroh, Quranic recitation, Sholawat Nabi, and community devotion. Together, these channels create an integrated moral learning environment that extends character formation across all dimensions of santri life. These findings suggest that the TTI framework constitutes a distinctive pesantren-based model of character education with significant implications for Islamic moral pedagogy in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the moral exemplarity (uswah hasanah) of KH. A. Zubairi Mz and its role in fostering santri's learning motivation at Pondok Pesantren Nasy'atul Muta'allimin. Employing a qualitative field research design with a descriptive-analytic approach, this study draws on Edwin Guthrie's behaviorist theory to analyze the underlying factors and manifestations of his exemplary conduct, as well as the ways in which santri internalize his values. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that KH. A. Zubairi Mz's moral exemplarity was fundamentally rooted in his profound love of knowledge (ḥubb al-'ilm). Its manifestations include sincere teaching, cultivating familial bonds with santri, heart-centered pedagogy through persistent supplication, and consistent practice of Islamic humility (tawāḍuʿ). Santri internalized these values through scholarly engagement, oral testimonies from senior santri, preservation of his legacy, and written documentation of his life and teachings. This study concludes that moral exemplarity grounded in sincere spiritual values constitutes a powerful mechanism for fostering intrinsic learning motivation within the pesantren educational tradition.

Abstract

The emergence of influencers from Islamic boarding school nyai circles who are active in endorsement activities is a new phenomenon that is quite interesting to study. Nyai's character, which is usually used as a means of Islamic preaching, is now being used in economic battles. Nyai, as role models for students and society in general, should display attitudes and behaviors that are in accordance with the teachings in Islamic boarding schools. However, in practice, Nyai endorsements actually appear to display a hedonistic lifestyle that is contrary to the value of simplicity. Based on this anxiety, researchers conducted a study on the practice of endorsing nyai on social media, as well as its impact on the concept of simple living taught in Islamic boarding schools. To analyze and answer this question, researchers collaborated on Vincent Mosco's commodification theory and Pierre Bourdieu's capital theory. This research is included in a phenomenological study with a qualitative research type. Data was obtained by conducting interviews and collecting documents. The results of the research show that in endorsement activities there were efforts to commodify the symbolic capital of the nyai as the kiai's wife/daughter. Apart from that, efforts were also found to commodify the Nyai's cultural capital, which included the Nyai's knowledge, her honest personality, and her skills in styling fashion that was trendy but still in accordance with the Shari'a. From these endorsement activities, it was found that there was an impact on the concept of simple living taught in Islamic boarding schools. Nyai's endorsement has been proven to be able to influence the consumption decisions of students who follow her, although not significantly enough

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Murajaah-based Tahfidzul Qur'an learning in achieving memorization targets at MI Annajah I Karduluk Sumenep. Despite the growing implementation of Tahfidzul Qur'an programs in Islamic elementary schools, empirical evidence on the effectiveness of structured Murajaah practices in achieving measurable memorization targets remains limited. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through participant observation, structured interviews with teachers and the school principal, and document analysis. The findings indicate that the Murajaah-based program, implemented through daily structured repetition sessions and consistent target monitoring, demonstrates effective outcomes as evidenced by 80% of students achieving memorization targets within the designated timeframe. Key supporting factors include high student motivation, disciplined learning schedules, and systematic Murajaah guidance by teachers. Primary challenges encompass limited instructional time, diverse student memory capacities, and insufficient home environment support. These findings suggest that structured Murajaah implementation plays a significant role in determining Tahfidzul Qur'an learning effectiveness at the elementary Islamic school level.

Abstract

This study explores how Syekh Maulana Ishaq Islamic Boarding School in Pacarron, Situbondo, preserves the local Ngalap Berkah tradition during the biennial Sinjang celebration, addressing the longstanding historical disconnection between pesantren and Javanese local culture since the polarization following the Diponegoro War in the early 19th century. Employing a qualitative field research design with a cultural anthropological approach, this study utilizes participatory observation, structured in-depth interviews, and documentary analysis to gather empirical data from key informants directly involved in the celebration. The results reveal three core findings. First, the Sinjang celebration is deeply embedded with cultural elements and religious emotions, where participants collectively perceive spiritual blessings within the purification water of Sultan Abdurrahman's sacred garment. Second, the pesantren plays a pivotal role in maintaining Islamic orthodoxy by guiding the community to adhere to Islamic law throughout the tradition, effectively integrating religious values into local practices. Third, the pesantren's motivation for preservation stems from its commitment to Wali Songo's cultural da'wah legacy, the institutionalization of the Barokah concept, and the moral obligation to honor ancestral mandates. This research contributes to understanding how pesantren can successfully reconcile theological commitments with living cultural heritage.

Abstract

Islamic boarding school education in Indonesia faces a persistent challenge in cultivating santri engagement that is genuinely intrinsically motivated rather than driven by external enforcement alone. This study investigates the institutional strategies employed by Pondok Pesantren Al-Amien Tegal Prenduan to nurture self-awareness among its santri as the motivational foundation for their participation in pesantren activities. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach through case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with key institutional informants — including teaching staff, organizational administrators, and santri — complemented by direct observation and documentary analysis. Data were analyzed through three sequential stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the institution implements five interconnected strategies: disciplined habituation, exemplary leadership, organizational participation through OSPA, structured reflection sessions, and extracurricular engagement. Santri self-awareness exists along a developmental continuum shaped by age, educational level, and length of institutional residence, progressing from externally oriented compliance toward genuinely internalized value-based engagement. The impacts of these strategies are observable across personal, spiritual, and social dimensions of santri participation in institutional life. This study concludes that self-awareness development in pesantren education is fundamentally a relational and communal achievement, one that demands deliberate institutional investment across every dimension of santri daily experience.
