Abstract

Social media has become a fundamental element in the lives of modern adolescents, playing a significant role in the process of identity formation in the digital era. This study analyzes how social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube influence adolescent identity construction from the perspectives of developmental psychology and popular culture. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, the study involved four adolescents aged 16-18 in Semarang City through in-depth interviews and observations of digital activities. The findings indicate that social media plays a dual role as a means of positive identity exploration and a source of psychological distress. Adolescents use digital platforms to experiment with various roles and lifestyles, but often become trapped in a false image to gain external validation. The process of identity formation is influenced by the dynamics of identity exploration and commitment, with social media providing a broad space for self-discovery but also creating the risk of identity conflict due to social comparison and popular cultural pressures. The study identified that adolescent girls are more vulnerable to negative impacts related to body image and beauty standards, while adolescent boys tend to focus on achievement and social recognition. Contextual factors such as family background, digital access, and local cultural values play a significant role in shaping adolescents' social media experiences. The results emphasize the need for structured digital literacy education and psychological support to help adolescents navigate the complexities of digital identity in a healthy and authentic manner.

Abstract

Hybrid work arrangements have transformed communication and collaboration systems in organizations, particularly in Indonesia where digital transformation accelerated rapidly during the pandemic. Virtual communication has emerged as the main mechanism for coordinating tasks, sharing knowledge, and maintaining interdependence among geographically distributed team members. This study employed a systematic literature review approach to examine the role of virtual communication, digital leadership, and organizational culture in shaping team effectiveness within hybrid workplaces in Indonesia. Findings indicate that balanced synchronous–asynchronous communication, clarity of expectations, and psychological safety enhance collaborative performance, whereas communication overload and unequal digital readiness hinder productivity. Furthermore, leaders who adopt empathetic, coaching-based, and outcome-oriented approaches foster stronger engagement and trust in hybrid teams. Organizations that develop adaptive communication norms, invest in digital capability building, and implement equitable hybrid work policies tend to achieve higher team cohesion and performance. This study highlights the importance of integrating technological, human, and cultural dimensions to optimize hybrid work effectiveness in emerging economy contexts

Abstract

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into communication systems has fundamentally transformed how messages are produced, distributed, and interpreted. AI-mediated communication no longer operates as a neutral technological intermediary but functions as a structural force that reshapes power relations, meaning-making processes, and mechanisms of control. This study aims to critically examine communication in the age of artificial intelligence by focusing on the interrelated dimensions of power, meaning, and control. Employing a qualitative approach with a critical–conceptual research design, the study analyzes theoretical literature from communication studies, critical media theory, and AI studies, alongside policy and ethical documents related to algorithmic governance. The findings indicate that AI algorithms operate as infrastructural actors that regulate visibility, legitimize certain discourses, and marginalize others through automated curation, recommendation, and moderation systems. Furthermore, the production of meaning becomes increasingly aligned with algorithmic logics of optimization and performance metrics, leading to potential homogenization and instrumentalization of communication. At the same time, AI-enabled surveillance and behavioral normalization introduce subtle forms of discipline that shape communicative practices. Although spaces of resistance and negotiation persist, they remain asymmetrical and structurally constrained. This study concludes that communication in the AI era must be understood as a contested arena of power rather than a purely technical domain, highlighting the urgent need for critical frameworks and democratic governance to preserve communicative autonomy and pluralism.

Abstract

The proliferation of AI-generated content (AIGC) has introduced a profound crisis of information authenticity across modern communication ecosystems. As large language models, generative image systems, and automated content pipelines become ubiquitous, the capacity of both individuals and institutions to distinguish authentic human-produced information from algorithmically synthesized content has been severely compromised. This systematic literature review examines the nature, scope, and communication science implications of the AIGC-driven authenticity crisis, drawing on 20 peer-reviewed studies published between 2021 and 2025. The review synthesizes evidence on how AIGC challenges fundamental epistemological assumptions embedded in communication theory, including source credibility, message authenticity, media trust, and information verification. Key findings reveal that human cognitive heuristics for detecting AI-generated language are systematically unreliable; that AIGC-enabled disinformation, deepfakes, and academic fabrication pose escalating societal risks; and that current detection and regulatory frameworks remain inadequate to the scale and velocity of AIGC proliferation. Drawing on communication science theory, this review proposes an Authentic Information Communication Framework (AICF) comprising four strategic dimensions: technological detection infrastructure, communicator transparency norms, audience critical digital literacy, and regulatory-ethical governance. Implications for communication scholars, media practitioners, policymakers, and educational institutions are discussed.

Abstract

Parasocial communication with digital influencers has become a significant phenomenon within the contemporary social media landscape. This study aims to examine the mechanisms underlying parasocial relationship (PSR) formation between audiences and digital influencers, including AI-generated virtual influencers, and their implications for consumer behavior and psychological well-being. Through a systematic literature review of 20 internationally peer-reviewed journal articles (2021–2025), the study identifies key mediating factors of virtual proximity: source credibility, self-disclosure, self-discrepancy, social presence, trust, and authenticity perception. Results indicate that micro- and nano-influencers generate stronger parasocial bonds than mega-influencers (mean PSR = 4.35 vs 3.42). The integration of virtual influencers adds complexity to these relations through dimensions of origin uncertainty and anthropomorphism. The study contributes by proposing the Integrative Digital Parasocial Model (IDPM), which maps the pathway from content characteristics to behavioral responses via relational mediators.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of digital narcissism on social media platforms through the lens of communication science, with particular focus on the culture of online validation-seeking that has emerged in contemporary digital ecosystems. The increasing proliferation of social media has given rise to new behavioral patterns in which individuals engage in self-promotional activities driven by a desire for social approval, recognition, and affirmation from online audiences. Drawing on theoretical frameworks including Uses and Gratifications Theory, Social Comparison Theory, and Self-Presentation Theory, this paper analyzes how algorithmic mechanisms, platform affordances, and cultural factors collectively contribute to the amplification of narcissistic tendencies in digital environments. The study employs a systematic literature review methodology, synthesizing empirical findings from 20 peer-reviewed sources published between 2021 and 2023. Findings indicate that online validation culture manifests through selfie-posting, status broadcasting, and curated self-presentation, with significant variation across platforms. The study further reveals that excessive engagement in validation-seeking behaviors correlates with reduced psychological well-being, increased social comparison, and susceptibility to misinformation. The paper concludes with implications for communication practitioners, platform designers, and mental health advocates, urging the development of healthier digital engagement norms.
