Abstract

Background: Infectious diseases are illnesses caused by microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, or parasites that can spread from one person to another. Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is a contagious disease primarily targeting the lungs but also capable of affecting other organs, including the skin, lymph nodes, bones, and meninges. The rational use of medication plays a vital role in ensuring the success of TB treatment and preventing the emergence of drug resistance. Objective: This study aimed to assess the rationality of antituberculosis drug administration, focusing on four key criteria—right patient, right indication, right drug, and right dose—based on established TB treatment guidelines. Methods: A non-experimental, observational descriptive design with retrospective data collection was applied. Data were obtained through purposive sampling from the medical records of pulmonary TB patients treated at Jaury Jusuf Putra Academic Hospital. The sample size, calculated using the Slovin formula, included 87 patients out of a total of 690 recorded between January and December 2024. Results: The findings indicated that the appropriateness of patient selection met the standard in 100% of cases. However, indication appropriateness and drug appropriateness were each achieved in only 66% of cases, while dose appropriateness was markedly lower at 49%. Most patients (64%) received Category I therapy with the HRZE regimen. Males accounted for 66% of the sample, and the age group with the highest prevalence was 56–65 years (26%). Conclusion: Although patient targeting was fully in accordance with guidelines, shortcomings remain in indication, drug selection, and especially dosing. These results underscore the importance of reinforcing compliance with TB treatment protocols and improving clinical judgment in prescribing practices.

Abstract

Background: The growing use of traditional medicines is accompanied by increased public trust in the effectiveness of herbal remedies. One such plant is Lannea coromandelica L. (Tammate), which is traditionally used for wound healing and lowering blood sugar levels. Scientific validation of its biological activity and safety profile is essential to support its use in pharmaceutical development and ensure its efficacy and safety for wider clinical applications. Objective: This study aimed to assess the bioactivity potential of Tammate leaf ethanol extract by evaluating its in vitro antioxidant activity and toxicity through standardized laboratory procedures. Methods: The extract was prepared through maceration using 96% ethanol as the solvent. Toxicity was tested using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) on Artemia salina larvae at concentrations of 10, 250, 500, and 750 ppm. Probit analysis was applied to determine LC₅₀ values as indicators of toxicity. Antioxidant activity was measured using the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) assay to determine IC₅₀ values. Results: The ethanol extract of Tammate leaves showed an LC₅₀ of 415.1 ppm, indicating a toxic effect (since LC₅₀ < 1000 ppm is considered toxic). Its IC₅₀ value was 19.03 ppm, which is relatively close to that of vitamin C as a positive control (2.841 ppm), and therefore categorized as having very strong antioxidant activity. Conclusion: The ethanol extract of Tammate leaves exhibits significant bioactive properties, with strong antioxidant potential and moderate toxicity. These results indicate promising potential for pharmaceutical development, although further research is required to fully assess its safety and therapeutic applicability in humans.

Abstract

Anemia is one of the most common nutritional problems affecting pregnant women worldwide and remains a major public health concern, particularly in developing countries. It poses significant risks to both maternal and fetal health, potentially leading to complications such as preterm birth, low birth weight, and increased maternal mortality. Several factors contribute to the development of anemia during pregnancy, including inadequate iron intake, excessive blood loss, vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiencies, and chronic diseases. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2023, approximately 78% of pregnant women globally experience anemia, highlighting the urgent need for effective prevention strategies. Counseling has been recognized as an important intervention to enhance maternal knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to anemia prevention. This study aimed to determine whether counseling has an effect on changes in the attitudes and behaviors of pregnant women in preventing anemia at Sudiang Raya Community Health Center, Makassar, in 2024. The research employed an observational analytical method with a descriptive approach, using an accidental sampling technique to select 40 pregnant women as respondents. Data collection was conducted through structured interviews using a validated questionnaire, and statistical analysis was performed to assess the relationship between counseling and changes in attitude and behavior. The results revealed a significant effect of counseling on improving the attitudes and behaviors of pregnant women regarding anemia prevention, with a p-value of 0.001, indicating a strong statistical association. This suggests that structured counseling sessions focusing on the importance of nutrition, supplementation, and healthy lifestyle practices can effectively influence pregnant women’s readiness to prevent anemia. Based on these findings, it is recommended that community health centers intensify counseling programs and integrate them into routine antenatal care to reduce anemia prevalence and improve pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract

The enhancement of security for electronic medical record data has become a primary concern for both users and application developers, given the sensitive nature of patient information and the increasing adoption of digital healthcare systems. Digital signatures in electronic transactions play a critical role in authenticating the identity of the signer and ensuring the integrity and authenticity of electronic information. In Indonesia, several hospitals have implemented digital signatures, including Tk III 04.06.03 Dr. Soetarto Hospital Yogyakarta, RSUP Hasan Sadikin, and Haji Makassar Hospital. At Haji Makassar Hospital, electronic medical records were first implemented in outpatient services in November 2023, followed by inpatient services in August 2024, and the emergency department (ED) in July 2024. Alongside this implementation, digital signatures for healthcare professionals were introduced. However, the current application only includes signatures from the Responsible Physician (Dokter Penanggung Jawab Pelayanan/DPJP) and ED nurses, represented in the form of QR barcodes, which have not yet been certified by an authorized certification authority. The objective of this study is to analyze the security and data protection aspects of DPJP digital signatures in electronic medical records at RSUD Haji Makassar. Using a descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, data were collected through purposive sampling techniques, focusing on the perceptions and experiences of relevant stakeholders. The findings indicate that while the current digital signature system used by DPJP at RSUD Haji Makassar provides adequate security and data protection measures to prevent unauthorized access or data tampering, the lack of formal certification poses a limitation in terms of legal validity. To strengthen trust, compliance, and legal standing, it is recommended that RSUD Haji Makassar immediately pursue certification for DPJP digital signatures in accordance with national electronic transaction regulations. This step would ensure that electronic medical records not only meet operational and security needs but also fulfill legal requirements for authenticity and accountability in digital health documentation.

Abstract

Medication errors (MEs) are preventable events that may cause or lead to inappropriate medication use or patient harm while the medication is in the control of healthcare professionals, patients, or consumers. These errors can occur at various stages of the medication process and are a significant concern for patient safety. The primary phases of ME include prescribing, transcribing, and dispensing. Understanding the distribution and frequency of these errors is essential for improving the quality of healthcare services. The objective of this study was to determine the potential for medication errors in outpatient prescriptions at Class II Hospital 14.05.01 Pelamonia Makassar. A quantitative research method was applied, involving the analysis of 100 prescriptions collected from various clinics, including neurology, pediatrics, pulmonology, urology, internal medicine, ENT, oncology surgery, mental health, ophthalmology, dermatology, cardiology, and dental services. Data were analyzed to identify potential errors in each phase of the prescription process. The results revealed that the prescribing phase had the highest potential for MEs, accounting for 20.18% of the total errors identified. Errors detected in the transcribing phase constituted 2.72%, while errors in the dispensing phase accounted for 2.45%. These findings suggest that the prescribing stage represents the most critical point of vulnerability in the medication use process, where targeted interventions and enhanced monitoring may significantly reduce the risk of errors. In conclusion, the pharmacy installation at Class II Hospital 14.05.01 Pelamonia Makassar must prioritize strategies to minimize prescribing errors, such as improving physician training, implementing prescription review systems, and enhancing interprofessional communication. Reducing MEs will contribute to better patient outcomes and improved overall healthcare quality.

Abstract

Adolescence, between the ages of 10–19 years, is a transitional stage marked by various physical and psychological changes. These changes can lead to several health issues, one of which is anemia. Anemia is a condition in which hemoglobin levels decrease, reducing the body’s ability to transport oxygen effectively and potentially affecting overall health and productivity. According to the 2018 Riskesdas data cited in Risky Amalia’s research (2023), the prevalence of anemia in Indonesia is still high at 32%, indicating that 3 to 4 out of every 10 adolescents are affected. Female adolescents are particularly vulnerable to anemia due to menstrual blood loss, which increases the risk of iron deficiency. This study aimed to determine the effect of health education delivered through video media on knowledge about anemia during menstruation among female adolescents at SMPN 11 Makassar in 2024. The research used a quasi-experimental approach with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The population consisted of 91 female students, with 48 selected as the sample using the Slovin formula. Participants were given educational material through video media, and their knowledge was measured before and after the intervention. The analysis results showed a statistically significant improvement in knowledge scores, with a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05), indicating that video-based health education had a substantial effect on increasing understanding of anemia during menstruation. This finding suggests that video media can be a powerful educational tool, combining visual and auditory elements to enhance learning and retention. Health education through video media is recommended as an effective strategy to increase adolescent awareness and understanding of anemia prevention and management, particularly among female students in the school setting. Such approaches can contribute to better adolescent health outcomes and reduce the prevalence of anemia in the community.
