Abstract

Background: For generations, herbal plants have played a vital role in traditional medicine in Indonesia. One such plant is red lemongrass (Cymbopogon nardus L.), which has shown promise as a source of natural bioactive compounds. This plant contains a variety of phytochemicals, including flavonoids, polyphenols, alkaloids, and essential oils. Flavonoid compounds such as flavones, flavanones, isoflavones, anthocyanins, and leucoanthocyanidins are particularly noted for their antioxidant functions. Objective: The primary aim of this research was to evaluate the antioxidant activity and determine the IC₅₀ values of the n-hexane and n-butanol fractions derived from the stem extract of red lemongrass collected in Wakatobi Regency. Methods: The extraction process began with maceration using methanol as the initial solvent, followed by a liquid-liquid extraction utilizing n-hexane and n-butanol to separate fractions. Antioxidant activity was assessed through the DPPH radical scavenging method at three concentrations: 50, 100, and 150 ppm. Results: The antioxidant assay revealed that the IC₅₀ value of the n-hexane fraction was 3.458 ppm, while the n-butanol fraction showed a significantly stronger activity with an IC₅₀ of 0.658 ppm. For comparison, vitamin C—used as a positive control—had an IC₅₀ value of 0.585 ppm. Both fractions fell within the “very strong antioxidant” category (IC₅₀ < 10 ppm). Conclusion: The n-butanol fraction demonstrated the highest antioxidant activity, closely approaching the efficacy of vitamin C. These results underline the therapeutic potential of red lemongrass and provide a scientific foundation for its further exploration in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical product development.

Abstract

Background: Antenatal care (ANC) is a vital healthcare service provided by trained medical professionals to monitor and support pregnant women from early gestation until childbirth. Comprehensive and routine ANC allows for the timely identification of abnormalities and potential risks during pregnancy, enabling healthcare providers to implement early and effective interventions that can prevent complications. Objective: This study aimed to examine the correlation between the implementation of integrated antenatal care and the early detection of pregnancy complications. Method: A comparative research design with a quantitative approach was used. The study population included third-trimester pregnant women, and a total of 66 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. Data were gathered through observation sheets, and both univariate and bivariate analyses were conducted using the chi-square statistical test. Results: The analysis revealed a significant association between the quality of integrated antenatal care services and the early identification of complications during pregnancy, with a p-value of 0.001. Conclusion: The findings indicate a strong and statistically significant relationship between the implementation of integrated antenatal care and the early detection of pregnancy-related complications. This suggests that when antenatal care services are well-coordinated, systematic, and consistently provided, the likelihood of detecting maternal health risks at an early stage significantly increases. Strengthening the quality and integration of antenatal care services can thus play a crucial role in improving maternal and fetal outcomes. These results support the need for continuous efforts in enhancing antenatal care delivery systems, particularly in high-risk pregnancy populations, to minimize delays in diagnosis and to promote proactive health interventions throughout the prenatal period.

Abstract

Proper medication storage ensures the safety and effectiveness of drugs, while appropriate destruction practices are vital to prevent the risks associated with expired or poor-quality medications. At the household level, correct drug management helps avoid medication errors, environmental pollution, and potential misuse. This study aimed to examine how housewives in Galesong Village, Takalar Regency, handle drug storage and destruction. A non-experimental quantitative method was used, with data collected in numerical form through structured questionnaires. Respondents were selected via purposive sampling, based on inclusion criteria such as being between 18–50 years old, having experience in drug storage and disposal, possessing good communication skills, not working in healthcare, and providing informed consent. From a population of 3,633 residents, a sample size of 100 housewives was determined using the Slovin formula. The results showed that the majority (86.3%) of participants demonstrated a good level of knowledge regarding proper drug storage. However, knowledge related to drug destruction was found to be moderate among 67.8% of respondents. These findings suggest that while housewives in the area are generally well-informed about how to store medications safely, there is still a need to improve awareness and understanding of safe drug disposal methods. Therefore, public health initiatives, especially those focusing on education and community outreach, are essential to strengthen drug management practices at the household level. By enhancing awareness in both areas—storage and destruction—households can contribute more effectively to medication safety and environmental protection, ultimately promoting better health outcomes for the broader community.

Abstract

The procurement of pharmaceutical supplies must be managed both effectively and efficiently due to varying drug costs across different hospitals. An excessive supply can lead to medication spoilage, while inadequate stock levels can cause service interruptions and patient dissatisfaction. To optimize procurement, the ABC-VEN combination method serves as a valuable tool for evaluating hypertension drug inventory based on both cost value and criticality. This study was conducted to classify hypertension medications covered by BPJS at Sinjai Regional Hospital during the period of April to June 2024 using the ABC-VEN analysis method. This non-experimental research employed a descriptive retrospective approach, utilizing primary data through interviews and secondary data from the Drug Procurement Report (LPD). The ABC-VEN analysis revealed that category A drugs accounted for Rp. 18,120,000 (53.15%) of the total procurement cost, category B drugs amounted to Rp. 11,850,000 (34.75%), and category C drugs totaled Rp. 4,122,443 (12.1%). Based on the VEN classification, vital (V) drugs made up 28.57% (2 items), essential (E) drugs comprised 42.86% (3 items), and non-essential (N) drugs also represented 28.57% (2 items). The combination of ABC and VEN classification further identified that among the seven BPJS-funded hypertension drugs analyzed, priority (P) drugs accounted for 81.62% of the procurement value, followed by main (U) drugs at 21.48%, and complementary (T) drugs at 1.86%. These findings emphasize the importance of using ABC-VEN analysis to prioritize and manage hospital drug procurement effectively, ensuring both cost control and the continuous availability of essential medications for hypertension treatment.

Abstract

Background: Pregnancy is a natural physiological process that lasts approximately 40 weeks. In the third trimester, pregnant women experience physical and psychological stress due to hormonal changes, which can trigger anxiety before childbirth. This anxiety is often caused by concerns about complications, pain during childbirth, and fear of caring for the baby. Data shows that approximately 30% of pregnant women globally and 28.7% in Indonesia experience anxiety, even reaching 35% in South Sulawesi. Prenatal education and light exercise such as pregnancy exercises have been shown to reduce anxiety and increase readiness for childbirth. Family support also plays an important role in maintaining the mental health of pregnant women. Objective: This study was conducted at the Dahlia Community Health Center in Makassar City to determine the relationship between education and mentoring in pregnancy exercises with the level of anxiety of pregnant women in the third trimester. Research Method: The method used is a quantitative research type, through a descriptive correlation approach and a cross-sectional research design to understand the correlation between the relationship of pregnancy exercises with the level of anxiety of pregnant women in the third trimester in facing childbirth. Results: The chi-square statistical test yielded a value of ρ=0.118>(ρ=0.05), indicating no relationship between prenatal exercise and anxiety levels. Meanwhile, the Mann-Whitney test showed a difference in anxiety levels between the group that participated in prenatal exercise and the group that did not participate in prenatal exercise (ρ=0.046). Conclusion: There is an effect of prenatal exercise education and support on anxiety in third-trimester pregnant women.

Abstract

Background: Preeclampsia is a serious complication during pregnancy that poses significant risks to both maternal and fetal health. Psychological stress and anxiety in expectant mothers are known contributors to the onset of this condition. Engaging in pregnancy exercise has been shown to help alleviate anxiety symptoms; however, the degree of effectiveness can vary depending on the method of instruction used to deliver the exercise program. This research aimed to evaluate and compare the impact of two different educational approaches—coaching and leaflet-based methods—on anxiety reduction in primigravida women during their second trimester. The study applied a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group framework. A total of 30 primigravida participants were selected and evenly assigned to either the intervention group, which received guided pregnancy exercise through the coaching method, or the control group, which followed instructions via printed leaflets. Anxiety levels before and after the intervention were assessed using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS). Findings demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in anxiety levels in both groups following the intervention. However, the group that participated in the coaching-based pregnancy exercise showed a more pronounced reduction in anxiety scores compared to those who used the leaflet method (p < 0.05). Pregnancy exercise guided by the coaching approach proved to be more effective in lowering anxiety among second-trimester primigravida women than exercises guided by informational leaflets. Incorporating coaching-based pregnancy exercise into prenatal care could serve as a valuable promotive and preventive strategy for reducing the risk of preeclampsia.
