Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the pivotal role of community nurses in public health, particularly within local communities. This article examines the expanded responsibilities of community nurses in the post-pandemic era, focusing on their essential contributions to healthcare delivery, mental health support, health education, and chronic disease management. With an increased demand for long-term health monitoring for COVID-19 survivors, community nurses have become integral in guiding patients through rehabilitation and managing persistent symptoms. Their role in health education and prevention has also grown, as they educate communities on hygiene practices and vaccination to prevent future outbreaks. Additionally, community nurses provide critical mental health support and assist in the management of chronic conditions that have intensified post-pandemic. The article concludes by emphasizing the importance of supporting and investing in community nurses to strengthen public health infrastructure and prepare for future health crises.

Abstract

Background: Continuity of care for individuals with mental disorders after hospitalization is essential to prevent relapse and support long-term recovery, particularly within primary health care settings. Nurses play a key role in ensuring continuity of care; however, they often encounter challenges related to workload, limited resources, inadequate mental health training, and systemic constraints. Objective: This study aimed to explore nurses’ experiences in providing continuity of care for patients with mental disorders following hospital discharge in primary health care settings. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study design was employed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with registered nurses working in primary health care facilities. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. The interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns and key themes related to nurses’ experiences in delivering continuity of care. Results: Four main themes emerged from the analysis: building therapeutic relationships, resource constraints and workload, professional development needs, and systemic barriers. Nurses emphasized the importance of trust, empathy, and ongoing communication in maintaining continuity of care. However, high workloads, limited human and material resources, insufficient specialized mental health training, and structural limitations within the health system were reported as major barriers that hindered consistent and comprehensive care delivery. Conclusion: Continuity of care for patients with mental disorders in primary health care settings remains challenged by individual, organizational, and systemic factors. Strengthening nurses’ capacity through targeted mental health training, improving staffing and resource allocation, and implementing supportive policies are crucial to enhance continuity of care and improve mental health outcomes.

Abstract

Background: The recent rise in monkeypox cases has highlighted the urgent need for improved preparedness within healthcare systems, particularly at the community level. Community health nurses play a critical role in early detection, prevention, and outbreak management; however, emerging infectious diseases such as monkeypox pose new challenges related to knowledge gaps, emotional responses, and system readiness. Objective: This study aimed to explore community health nurses’ perceptions, knowledge, and preparedness in managing monkeypox cases. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study design was employed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with community health nurses working in primary health care centers in. Participants were selected using purposive sampling based on their involvement in community health and infectious disease services. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key patterns and themes related to nurses’ experiences and preparedness in managing monkeypox. Results: Four main themes emerged: awareness and knowledge of monkeypox, perceived risk and emotional response, preparedness and training needs, and barriers to effective response. Although most nurses demonstrated general awareness of monkeypox, gaps in disease-specific knowledge and practical training were evident. These limitations contributed to feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, and reduced confidence in managing potential cases. In addition, systemic barriers such as delayed resource allocation and inconsistent communication were identified as factors hindering effective outbreak response. Conclusion: Community health nurses’ preparedness to manage monkeypox remains suboptimal due to gaps in knowledge, training, and system support. Strengthening preparedness through targeted education, improved access to resources, and clear communication mechanisms is essential to enhance outbreak response and support community health nurses in managing future emerging infectious diseases.

Abstract

Background: Effective diabetes management requires consistent dietary adherence to achieve optimal glycemic control and prevent long-term complications. Family support plays a crucial role in influencing dietary behaviors among patients with diabetes, particularly in community settings where self-management is largely carried out at home. Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between family support and dietary compliance among patients with diabetes in a community setting. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted involving 200 patients with diabetes recruited from community health centers. Participants were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using structured questionnaires that included demographic characteristics and standardized instruments to measure family support and dietary adherence. Data analysis was performed using Pearson’s correlation test to assess the association between family support and dietary compliance. Results: The analysis revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between family support and dietary compliance (r = 0.58; p = 0.002). Patients who reported higher levels of family support demonstrated better adherence to recommended dietary regimens compared to those with lower levels of support. Conclusion: Family support is significantly associated with dietary compliance among patients with diabetes. Strengthening family involvement through community-based and family-centered nursing interventions may enhance dietary adherence and contribute to improved diabetes management outcomes.

Abstract

The increasing aging population has heightened the need for effective management strategies that support functional independence among older adults. Functional independence, defined as the ability to perform daily activities autonomously, is crucial for maintaining quality of life in the elderly. This article discusses essential aspects of optimizing elderly management, emphasizing the role of gerontological nursing. Key strategies include addressing polypharmacy, promoting exercise interventions, implementing technological solutions such as smart home systems, and encouraging skill development. These approaches enable elderly individuals to sustain autonomy and reduce dependence on continuous supervision, thereby enhancing their dignity and well-being. By integrating these strategies, gerontological nursing can significantly contribute to improving the quality of life and independence among the elderly, meeting the demands of a growing demographic.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming nursing services by enhancing decision-making, improving efficiency, and delivering personalized patient care. This article examines the applications, impacts, challenges, and future directions of AI in nursing. Key applications include predictive analytics for patient deterioration, automation of repetitive tasks, and clinical decision support, which collectively reduce workloads and improve care quality. AI also enhances nursing education through personalized learning systems and realistic simulations. Despite its benefits, challenges such as data privacy concerns, algorithmic biases, resistance to technology adoption, and insufficient regulatory frameworks hinder its full implementation. Addressing these challenges requires robust cybersecurity measures, inclusive AI development, comprehensive training programs, and clear guidelines to ensure ethical and effective integration into nursing practices. Looking to the future, advancements such as robotics, natural language processing, and AI-powered chatbots promise to further revolutionize nursing. Collaborative efforts between AI developers and nursing professionals are essential to tailor AI technologies for specific nursing tasks, ensuring relevance and usability. Additionally, incorporating AI training into nursing education will prepare future nurses to adapt to AI-driven healthcare environments. This article highlights the transformative potential of AI in nursing while emphasizing the need for a balanced approach to integration. By addressing barriers and leveraging innovative technologies, AI can enhance nursing services, delivering safer, more efficient, and patient-centered care. Abstract

Background: Hypertension in the elderly is a major public health problem due to its strong association with serious complications, including cardiovascular disease and stroke. The development of hypertension in older adults is influenced by multiple factors, encompassing lifestyle behaviors, psychosocial conditions, and environmental influences. Objective: This study aimed to identify factors influencing the occurrence of hypertension among elderly individuals through a literature review. Methods: A literature review was conducted using articles retrieved from reputable databases, including PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. Relevant studies were identified using predefined keywords related to hypertension and elderly populations. The article selection process followed the PRISMA approach, and the methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) instrument. Results: The review findings indicated that unhealthy dietary patterns, physical inactivity, obesity, limited family support, inadequate knowledge about hypertension, and unfavorable environmental factors were the main contributors to hypertension in the elderly. These factors were consistently reported across the included studies as having a significant influence on blood pressure control in older adults. Conclusion: Hypertension in the elderly is influenced by a complex interaction of lifestyle, psychosocial, and environmental factors. Comprehensive and integrated interventions focusing on lifestyle modification, health education, strengthening family and social support, and improving elderly-friendly healthcare environments are essential to enhance hypertension prevention and management among older adults.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a common chronic health problem among the elderly and its prevalence increases with advancing age. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as structured physical activity in the form of hypertension exercise, are recommended to support blood pressure control and improve overall well-being in older adults. Objective: This study aimed to examine the effect of hypertension exercise on blood pressure among elderly individuals and to identify factors influencing the effectiveness of the intervention. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test control group design was conducted involving 60 elderly participants diagnosed with hypertension. Participants were divided into an intervention group and a control group. The intervention group participated in a structured hypertension exercise program for eight weeks, while the control group received no intervention. Blood pressure measurements were taken before and after the intervention period. Data were analyzed using comparative statistical tests to assess changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Results: The results showed a significant reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the intervention group compared to the control group. In addition, participants in the intervention group reported improvements in mental well-being. Social support and personal motivation were identified as important factors contributing to the effectiveness of the hypertension exercise program. Conclusion: Hypertension exercise is an effective non-pharmacological intervention for reducing blood pressure and improving quality of life among the elderly. Integrating structured exercise programs with adequate social support and medical supervision may enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of hypertension management in older adults.

Abstract

Background: Therapeutic communication is a fundamental component of healthcare services, as it facilitates effective interactions between healthcare providers and patients and contributes to patient-centered care. Effective therapeutic communication is particularly important in community health centers, where patient satisfaction reflects the quality of primary healthcare services. Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between therapeutic communication skills and patient satisfaction at community health centers (Puskesmas). Methods: A quantitative study with a correlational design was conducted involving 200 patients receiving services at Puskesmas. Data were collected using structured questionnaires that assessed therapeutic communication skills and patient satisfaction. Statistical analysis was performed using correlation tests to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between therapeutic communication skills and patient satisfaction. Results: The findings demonstrated a significant positive relationship between therapeutic communication skills and patient satisfaction. Among the dimensions of therapeutic communication, empathy and active listening were identified as the strongest contributors to patient satisfaction. Conclusion: Therapeutic communication skills are significantly associated with patient satisfaction in community health centers. Enhancing empathy, active listening, and clarity of information delivery through structured training programs for healthcare providers is recommended to improve patient satisfaction and overall quality of primary healthcare services.

Abstract

Background: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease with an increasing prevalence among the elderly and requires long-term management to prevent complications. Effective diabetes management depends not only on medical treatment but also on consistent self-care behaviors and medication adherence, in which family support plays an essential role. Objective: This study aimed to examine the role of family support in the management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus among elderly patients through a literature review. Methods: A literature review was conducted by analyzing relevant articles published in international peer-reviewed journals focusing on family support and diabetes management in elderly populations. Articles were selected based on predefined inclusion criteria related to study population, family support dimensions, and diabetes management outcomes. The selected literature was systematically reviewed and synthesized to identify patterns and key findings regarding the role of family support. Results: The findings demonstrated that family support, including emotional, informational, and instrumental support, was associated with improved glycemic control, better medication adherence, enhanced self-care behaviors, and improved quality of life among elderly patients with T2DM. However, several barriers were identified, such as limited family knowledge about diabetes management and restricted access to healthcare services, which may reduce the effectiveness of family support. Conclusion: Family support plays a critical role in the effective management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in the elderly. Strengthening family-centered health education and integrating family involvement into long-term diabetes care models are recommended to optimize clinical outcomes and improve the overall quality of life of elderly patients with T2DM.
