Abstract

Climate change and environmental degradation are global challenges that demand the involvement of the education sector in sustainable development. In Indonesia, pesantren as traditional Islamic educational institutions have a strategic position because they not only transmit religious knowledge, but also shape the social values and practices of the community. Some Islamic boarding schools have developed waste management, renewable energy, and organic farming programs, but these initiatives are still sporadic and rarely systematically studied. This research aims to examine the contribution of pesantren to environmental education and sustainable development, identify practices, challenges, and opportunities that arise, as well as map the latest research trends. The study was conducted with a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using the PRISMA 2020 framework. Literature searches on Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar (2020–2025) using Boolean strings: TITLE-ABS-KEY ("pesantren" OR "Islamic boarding school") AND TITLE-ABS-KEY ("sustainability" OR "sustainable development" OR "environmental education" OR "environmental issues"). Of the 77 articles identified, 30 met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed descriptively and thematically. The findings show that pesantren integrate Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) with a spiritual dimension—khalīfah, amanah, ihsan—that places ecological practices as worship. The main themes include curriculum-based and extracurricular environmental education, green pesantren management, and contribution to the SDGs through renewable energy and waste management. Challenges include limited funding, cultural resistance, and weak policy support. Pesantren play a strategic role in sustainable development by connecting religious norms and ecological practices. Follow-up research with a mixed-methods approach, standardized indicators, and longitudinal studies is urgently needed, while policies in the form of eco-pesantren standards, performance-based incentives, and integration into the SDGs monitoring system will strengthen the contribution of pesantren at the national and global levels.

Abstract

Strategy refers to a method or systematic plan that serves as a general guideline for action in order to achieve predetermined objectives. In the context of learning, strategy is closely related to the approaches and techniques employed by teachers in delivering instructional content within a specific learning environment. This study was conducted at MTs Negeri 2 Kepulauan Meranti using a qualitative research approach. The aim of this research was to analyze teacher strategies, as well as the supporting and inhibiting factors in the implementation of the Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin Student Profile (P5RA) within the Merdeka Curriculum. The findings indicate that the implementation of teacher strategies in applying the Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin Student Profile within the Merdeka Curriculum has not yet been fully optimal, particularly in terms of communication and instructional delivery methods. The strategies employed by teachers include the internalization of values such as civility (ta’addub), role modeling (qudwah), brotherhood (muwathanah), moderation (tawassuth), balance (tawazun), justice (i‘tidal and musawah), deliberation (shura), tolerance (tasamuh), as well as development (tathawwur) and innovation (ibtikar). These values are integrated into classroom instruction and P5RA project-based activities to foster students’ character development in line with the principles of moderation and moral integrity. Furthermore, the supporting factors in the implementation of the Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin Student Profile include the strong commitment of the school principal and teaching staff to the execution of P5RA, collaborative partnerships between teachers and parents, and the organization of professional development activities such as workshops and seminars related to the Merdeka Curriculum. Conversely, the inhibiting factors identified consist of insufficient parental and teacher supervision, as well as the limited availability of comprehensive training and workshops specifically focused on the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum and P5RA. These findings suggest that strengthening teacher strategies and institutional support is essential to optimize the implementation of the Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin Student Profile in madrasah settings.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Islamic educational management strategies in increasing active student participation in the classroom through a specific approach. This study used library research methods by reviewing scientific literature published in the last five years, drawn from various academic databases and selected based on specific inclusion criteria. Data analysis was conducted using a thematic content analysis approach to identify patterns, conceptual relationships, and key findings regarding the effectiveness of Islamic educational management strategies. The results of the study indicate that specific approaches such as the application of discussion methods, demonstrations, role-playing, and contextual learning can increase students' interest in learning, their courage in discussions, and their ability to reflect on the material. Furthermore, the integration of digital media in learning, when supported by teachers' managerial competence in managing interactive classes, has also been shown to strengthen student participation. Conversely, conventional and one-way learning approaches tend to reduce student engagement due to limited space for expression and interaction. This study concludes that Islamic educational management strategies based on a specific approach are highly relevant to the demands of modern learning and effective in increasing active student participation. Further research is recommended to be conducted empirically through experiments or the application of digital media to measure the direct impact on learning outcomes and student engagement.

Abstract

The rapid development of social media has brought significant changes in student interaction patterns and behavior, including in moral and ethical aspects. The rampant misuse of digital media, such as hate speech, the spread of hoaxes, and the degradation of communication ethics, indicates a serious challenge for Islamic education in instilling the values of akhlakul karimah (good morals). This study aims to analyze the role of strengthening digital ethics in Islamic education and strategies for fostering students' morals in the social media era. This study uses a qualitative approach with a literature study method, by reviewing various relevant literature sources, including books, journal articles, and educational policy documents. The results show that digital ethics is an integral part of Islamic education, serving as a normative foundation for guiding student behavior in the digital space. Islamic values such as honesty, responsibility, communication etiquette, and moderation need to be systematically internalized in the learning process to shape students' character with noble character and wisdom in using social media. Furthermore, integrating digital ethics into the Islamic Religious Education curriculum is an important strategy in strengthening students' moral development to face the moral challenges of the digital era. This study concludes that Islamic education has a strategic role in building students' ethical awareness so that they are able to utilize social media positively, responsibly, and in line with Islamic values.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the madrasah's strategy in achieving quality by transforming teachers into architects of the madrasah quality assurance unit. This research approach is qualitative with a case study design. The location of this research is Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Al Falah Sambimulyo Bangorejo Banyuwangi. The researcher is the key instrument in collecting research data. The subjects or informants in this study are the madrasah principal, teachers and committee. The data collection techniques used are participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document studies. This data analysis uses the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana analysis model, namely: data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing/verification. Data validity testing uses credibility, dependability, and confirmability tests. To ensure data validity, data checking is carried out through continuous observation, triangulation, member checking, peer discussion, and checking the adequacy of references. MI Al Falah's journey towards becoming a superior madrasah is driven by three fundamental strategies: Aligning Perceptions of SPMM, Transforming Teachers as Quality Architects, and Implementing SPMM Based on Digital Evidence and a Quality Culture. The successful implementation of this internal quality assurance depends on the collective recognition that SPMM is an agent of change that drives a continuous cycle of quality improvement, not just an administrative unit. Teacher transformation through strengthening pedagogical competencies integrated with quality assurance skills, supported by distributed leadership and a Professional Learning Community (PLC) culture, has transformed quality assurance into a shared responsibility

Abstract

The Society 5.0 era brought fundamental changes in the world of education, including Islamic Religious Education (PAI), which historically often used conventional lecture-based learning approaches. Technological transformation that integrates artificial intelligence, big data, the internet of things, and digital analytics demands religious learning that not only emphasizes information transmission, but also builds critical, collaborative, creative, and technologically literate competencies. This study aims to analyze the modernization of PAI in the context of Society 5.0 through a literature study approach with thematic analysis of the current literature. The results of the study show that the modernization of PAI learning requires a pedagogical reconstruction that leads to a participatory, digital-interactive, and student-centered model. In addition, modernization also depends on teacher readiness, support for digital facilities, curriculum flexibility, and classroom culture that encourages collaboration. The research concludes that PAI learning must move from a textual paradigm to an integrative approach that combines Islamic values with 21st century competencies in order to be able to respond to the moral, social, and technological challenges of the modern generation. This modernization is a strategic foundation in strengthening the religious character as well as the adaptive abilities of students in the midst of accelerating digital transformation.

Abstract

This study presents a conceptual analysis of Islamic educational institutions as entrepreneurial organizations, addressing the limitations of predominantly normative and administrative Islamic education management approaches, which adequately account for organizational adaptability, innovation, and sustainability. Through a critical literature synthesis, the study develops a conceptual model positioning entrepreneurship as a strategic organizational framework aligned with Islamic values, integrating strategic orientation, managed innovation capacity, and institutional sustainability. Findings indicate that an entrepreneurial orientation functions as a strategic guiding logic, enabling institutions to regularly respond to environmental changes without compromising normative principles and educational objectives. The proposed model bridges organizational entrepreneurship theory and Islamic education management practices, offering a conceptual The proposed model bridges organizational entrepreneurship theory and Islamic education management by conceptualizing entrepreneurship as a strategic organizational logic rather than an auxiliary economic activity. The study’s main contribution lies in demonstrating that an entrepreneurial orientation—integrated with adaptive governance structures and Islamic value-based organizational culture—can strengthen institutional innovation and sustainability without compromising educational missions. By positioning Islamic educational institutions as value-driven entrepreneurial organizations, this study extends organizational entrepreneurship theory to non-profit, faith-based contexts and enriches Islamic education management scholarship with a strategic and adaptive perspective. Furthermore, it outlines clear directions for future research, including empirical validation of the model, the development of value-based operational indicators, and comparative analysis across institutional setting.

Abstract

This study aims to explore how green pesantren–based entrepreneurship functions as an alternative educational financing strategy in Islamic boarding schools. The research addresses the problem of financial sustainability in Islamic educational institutions, which often rely heavily on conventional funding sources and are vulnerable to economic instability. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research was conducted at Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with institutional managers and business unit leaders, participant observation, and document analysis. The data were analysed using an interactive model consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that environmentally oriented institutional programs, initially implemented as environmental awareness initiatives, have gradually evolved into structured entrepreneurial activities that generate additional funding for the pesantren. These programs are managed within the institutional framework, ensuring alignment with educational values and the pesantren's religious mission. The study demonstrates that green entrepreneurship can strengthen financial resilience without leading to the commercialisation of education. This research contributes to the discourse on Islamic education by offering a context-based model of sustainable educational financing that integrates environmental management, institutional entrepreneurship, and religious values.

Abstract

Character building for students from an early age is an important aspect of Islamic education, and the subject of Aqidah Akhlak in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) plays a central role in the internalization of Islamic values. This study aims to analyze student management strategies in integrating Aqidah Akhlak to strengthen Islamic character at MI Tarbiyatul Athfal. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation of teachers, the madrasah principal, and students in grades IV-VI. The findings indicate that the learning strategies implemented include the use of exemplary stories, daily habits, and integration in worship and extracurricular activities. Manifestations of student character such as honesty, responsibility, and politeness show significant improvement, although internalization of values is still at the stage of external compliance. Supporting factors include teacher commitment, a visionary madrasah principal, and parental participation, while the main obstacles are the high teaching load, lack of facilities, and the absence of affective assessment standards. The conclusion of this study is that the holistic integration of Aqidah Akhlak can strengthen the formation of Islamic character, but requires systemic support from madrasah and government policies for optimal achievement.
