Abstract

In recent years, publications indexed in Scopus have become an essential benchmark for assessing institutional performance and academic quality. Academic institutions and regulatory agencies use these standards to evaluate research quality, institutional standing, and global recognition. The emphasis on Scopus-indexed publications as a quality marker increases the cost of academic research and discredits work from disadvantaged nations and institutions. This study illustrates the difficulties researchers in emerging nations face when publishing in Scopus-indexed journals due to the high fees involved. This study employed content analysis and a qualitative research approach. This study concluded that Scopus-indexed platforms enable academics to publish their work, network with peers, and remain current with developments in their field. Academic collaboration and networking can result in new publications and research initiatives. Nonetheless, many scholars and institutions continue to encounter difficulties due to the high cost of publishing in Scopus-indexed journals, particularly in developing nations.

Abstract

The application of digital technology strengthens the circular economy in rural areas, as illustrated by a case study of the Zerowastemate application implemented in Mrican Village, Ponorogo Regency. This program was implemented by the Mathematics Community Research (MCR) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Ponorogo (UMPO) under the 2024 Student Organization Capacity Strengthening Program (PPK Ormawa). With a participatory approach, students act as facilitators in digitizing waste bank management, which was previously done manually and inefficiently. The Zerowastemate application enables transparent and efficient waste management by digitally recording waste type, weight, and value. It promotes community participation in cleanliness and waste reduction, while increasing household income through waste savings. This program demonstrates how digital technology enhances both environmental and economic aspects in villages, highlighting the vital role of collaboration between students, technology, and communities in achieving sustainable development. The research method involved selecting participants, collecting data through interviews, observations, and documentation, and then analyzing the data thematically. Triangulation ensured validity, while a descriptive narrative captured the impact. The program shows how student-led digital innovation drives sustainable, community-based environmental and economic change.

Abstract

This study evaluated Nigeria’s counterinsurgency strategies against the Boko Haram insurgency. It employed a historical research design and used content analysis to interpret the data. The study involved a thorough review of existing literature and documents to extract relevant information. The data were analyzed using trend analysis methods. Findings showed that Nigeria’s military response to Boko Haram has been dynamic and multi-pronged, encompassing direct military engagements, institutional reforms, regional partnerships, and community-based strategies. Since the insurgency’s onset in 2009, the government has adopted a comprehensive approach, integrating military, legal, socio-economic, and diplomatic instruments to address the crisis, recognizing that lasting solutions require more than force alone. However, ongoing obstacles, such as inadequate logistics and outdated military hardware, have impeded progress. Intelligence lapses have also worsened the security situation, particularly in areas heavily affected by the insurgency. The study concluded that overcoming Boko Haram necessitates strong political commitment, operational transparency, increased regional cooperation, and a citizen-focused strategy that emphasizes security, justice, and inclusive development. Achieving sustainable peace will require a holistic, long-term effort. Among its recommendations, the study urged the Nigerian government to invest in modern military assets, such as surveillance systems, armored vehicles, and communication devices, and to establish efficient logistics and supply chains to support troops on the front lines better.

Abstract

Digitalization of industrial processes offers companies opportunities to enhance operational performance, primarily through data analytics. Data analytics is a method for analyzing data to gain insights that support resource efficiency and improve a company's financial performance. This study aims to investigate the financial performance of PT Aneka Tambang Tbk using profitability ratios, namely NPM, ROA, and ROE, and to determine whether data analytics can simplify and represent the company's financial performance. Although profitability ratio analysis is widely practiced, data analytics for financial performance analysis remains rare. This study employs a qualitative method, using secondary data from annual reports published on the Indonesia Stock Exchange and the company's official website. Data collection techniques involve documentation methods. The analysis results indicate that the financial performance of PT Aneka Tambang Tbk in 2014 - 2023 is considered suboptimal, as the average NPM, ROA, and ROE remain below industry standards. Data analytics in financial performance analysis can simplify and more effectively represent financial performance.

Abstract

This paper examines the implementation of the post-bureaucratic model and its impact on organizational effectiveness within the Nigerian public sector. The primary mandate of the public service in Nigeria is to ensure optimal performance in delivering a broad spectrum of services to the general public. However, the sector is frequently constrained by a broad range of responsibilities, a large population to serve, and the need for strict adherence to established regulations, all of which collectively impede operational efficiency. Thus, the Nigerian public service continues to operate under intense institutional pressure. This condition has historically legitimized the adoption of bureaucratic structures to ensure procedural precision and minimize the risk of litigation by dissatisfied stakeholders. Nonetheless, the advent of advanced technologies has rendered many traditional bureaucratic paradigms increasingly inadequate for addressing contemporary organizational demands. In response, this article examines the effectiveness of the post-bureaucratic model as a strategic approach for improving organizational performance within Nigeria’s public sector. Anchored in a qualitative research design, the study draws upon secondary data obtained from scholarly texts, peer-reviewed journal articles, reputable online sources, and media publications. Key findings highlight persistent bureaucratic impediments, including red tape, administrative inertia, corruption, and structural rigidity. The study concludes by proposing context-specific strategies for embedding post-bureaucratic practices within the Nigerian public service. Central among these are the prioritization of leadership development, the formulation of robust change management frameworks, and the adoption of policy instruments that incentivize innovation.  The study contributes to knowledge by demonstrating the significance of the post-bureaucratic paradigm in improving organizational performance in Nigeria's public service.

Abstract

The paper, titled "Resurgence of Military Coups in the West African Sub-region and the Implications of the Emergence of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)," focuses on the military coups in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger between 2020 and 2023. These coups constitute disturbing political events that raise serious concerns about political stability in the junta States and the region as a whole. Most importantly, it threatens the future of democratic governance in the West African Sub-region. The aftermath of sanctions on Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger by Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) and the threat of military intervention amongst other factors gave impetus to the formation of the contending bloc; Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in the region thus leading to fragmentation of the union of ECOWAS, divisive politics, regional economic sabotage by AES member States amongst other unfolding implications. The paper addresses this issue by setting two objectives for the study: to identify the factors underlying recent coups and to examine the impact of the AES on ECOWAS. The State fragility theory was adopted as a framework for the study. The research is qualitative; accordingly, a historical research design was adopted. Findings reveal that though the AES is founded on grounds of addressing rising insecurity amongst its members, the bloc also serves as a tool for legitimizing these junta governments. Also, existing regional cooperative security frameworks and trade liberalization are threatened. The paper recommends that the ruling elite prioritize a sincere and committed focus on enhancing democracy and, by extension, promoting good governance, and that ECOWAS adopt a systemic approach to curtail rising insecurity in the region to facilitate trade and investment. At the same time, continued diplomatic engagement should be used to win back estranged members

Abstract

This study examined terrorism in Nigeria between 2010 and 2023, focusing on its root causes, evolution, and effects on national development. Using a historical research design and qualitative analysis of documentaries, this study applies relative deprivation theory to explain how systemic deprivation, unemployment, and state failures perpetuate violence. Findings reveal that political competition, regional disparities, poverty, inequality, corruption, and weak governance have fueled exclusion and marginalization, which in turn breed anger, distrust, and violent extremism. Neo-patrimonial practices and ineffective leadership further undermine unity and development. The study concluded that terrorism in Nigeria extends beyond groups like Boko Haram, as past communal conflicts and socio-economic grievances contribute significantly to nationwide insecurity. To address these challenges, the study recommended tackling marginalization, poverty, inequality, religious extremism, and weak institutions. Strategic investments in youth, healthcare, and education, effective resource allocation, and reforms in governance and security are essential for rebuilding communities, mitigating external influences, and ensuring sustainable peace and development.

Abstract

China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has emerged as a strategic tool of soft power, shaping diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations between China and Africa. This paper examines how the BRI enhances China’s influence on the continent through infrastructure investments, trade partnerships, and governance cooperation. It explores the economic benefits of the initiative, including job creation, enhanced connectivity, and industrial development, while also addressing concerns regarding debt sustainability, environmental impact, and political dependence. Furthermore, the research assesses African perceptions of the BRI, analyzing both its long-term benefits and potential risks. Additionally, it highlights the role of cultural and educational exchanges in strengthening China’s soft power presence in Africa. The findings reveal that while the BRI significantly contributes to Africa’s development, it also raises challenges related to governance, economic dependence, and transparency. The study concludes that for the BRI to be mutually beneficial, both China and African nations must adopt sustainable financing mechanisms, prioritize local economic participation, and foster deeper cultural engagements. These measures will ensure that the initiative supports Africa’s long-term growth while advancing China’s soft power objectives.
