Abstract

Anemia prevalence among adolescent girls is significantly higher compared to boys, primarily due to menstruation and increased iron requirements during growth. This condition negatively affects immunity, concentration, academic performance, physical fitness, and productivity, and poses long-term health risks, particularly during future pregnancies. In Bone Regency, adolescent anemia rates remain high despite the government’s iron supplementation program. This community service program aimed to implement research findings on using dates (Phoenix dactylifera) to increase hemoglobin levels and address anemia among adolescent girls. The activity involved health education on anemia prevention and the daily provision of 100 grams of dates (7–8 pieces) for seven consecutive days during menstruation. The program was conducted through observation, counseling sessions, and hemoglobin monitoring before and after the intervention. The rationale for using dates is based on their high iron and nutrient content, which supports hemoglobin synthesis naturally. The targeted participants were adolescent girls from the community surrounding Lapatau Stadium, Bone Regency. Expected outcomes included increased knowledge regarding anemia prevention, improvement in hemoglobin levels, and the promotion of alternative nutritional interventions for anemia management. Monitoring and evaluation were conducted by measuring hemoglobin levels post-intervention to assess effectiveness. The program also aims to disseminate results through a SINTA 5-indexed journal publication, providing evidence-based recommendations for integrating date consumption into adolescent nutrition programs. This initiative highlights the potential of locally acceptable, culturally relevant food-based strategies to complement existing public health interventions in reducing anemia prevalence among teenage girls

Abstract

Stunting, a condition of impaired growth and development among children under five caused by chronic malnutrition in the first 1,000 days of life, remains a significant public health issue in Indonesia. Early prevention efforts are essential, particularly among women of reproductive age and prospective brides and grooms, who are critical in ensuring optimal maternal and child health. This community service program was conducted at Puskesmas Sekaran, Semarang, to empower prospective couples through balanced nutrition education to reduce the risk of stunting. The program adopted a participatory approach involving health workers, village authorities, and the Office of Religious Affairs. Activities included baseline assessments of chronic energy deficiency (CED) and anemia, development of educational media (booklets, leaflets, and banners), pre-marital nutrition classes, and intensive student mentoring. The intervention reached 25 participants across five villages, with activities delivered interactively through presentations, discussions, and Q&A sessions addressing scientific facts and common myths about nutrition. Pre- and post-tests were used to evaluate changes in knowledge, showing significant improvements: average pre-test scores increased from 89/100 to 95/100, with 92% of participants demonstrating improved knowledge and 76% achieving perfect post-test scores. These findings highlight that nutrition education, supported by user-friendly media, effectively enhances knowledge and awareness regarding balanced nutrition among prospective brides and grooms. The program demonstrates that empowering couples before marriage contributes to healthier pregnancy preparation, reduces risks of CED and anemia, and ultimately supports the national goal of lowering stunting prevalence

Abstract

Amidst the onslaught of modernisation, traditional handicrafts continue to hold a unique appeal. One such craft is blacksmithing. Blacksmiths, despite their high level of skill in producing handicrafts, often face significant health and safety risks due to exposure to heat, the use of heavy equipment, and direct contact with hazardous materials. Observations at the partner site revealed workplace accidents, including burns (35.8%), contact with hot iron (58.7%), and being struck by iron materials (35%), which were attributed to the nature of their work. Based on these issues, community service activities were conducted in the form of education on the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to limit disabilities among iron craftsmen. The results of the education on the benefits of PPE showed an increase in knowledge, attitude, and behavior, with pre-test results of 65%, 77%, and 85%, respectively, and posttest results of 83%, 89%, and 91%, respectively. The results of the education on the benefits of fire extinguishers showed an increase in knowledge, attitude, and behaviour, with pre-test results of 75%, 80%, and 85%, respectively, and post-test results of 88%, 83%, and 90%, respectively. It can be concluded that the effectiveness of this community service program was successful

Abstract

Water is the fundamental basis for all biological and human activities. Water is believed to be a natural resource that will never run out and will always be available. Nonetheless, the availability of water as a natural resource is restrained due to its relatively constant hydrological cycle, thus making it limited in supply. The methods used during the activity were lectures and discussions. At the beginning of the activity, the team conducted counseling related to well water sanitation, its impact, and how to overcome it. The method of this counseling stage is carried out through 5 stages, namely: socialization stage and the implementation stage. This activity includes 3 sessions, among others: First stage: Pre-test, which is given through a questionnaire, lecture, question and answer, and discussion methods. Posttest and assessing the results of the posttest, the technology application stage, the monitoring and evaluation stage, and the program sustainability stage. The results of the service activities showed that the educational program on access to clean water, sanitation, and the effects of borehole water for health significantly increased the knowledge of the participants. The average score increased from 19.22 in the pre-test to 21.18 in the posttest, with a p-value of 0.001, indicating a significant difference. This result confirms the effectiveness of the clean water and sanitation education program

Abstract

Community service activities at the Integrated Service Post for Teenage Girls in Tabukan Raya Village, Tabukan Subdistrict, involved 10 cadres and 17 teenage girls. The event was opened by the Head of Village together with the managing midwife, village midwife, Family Empowerment and Welfare Organization, and cadres from the Integrated Service Post. The cadre training was conducted with pre-tests and post-tests to assess knowledge about adolescent girls' health, particularly the prevention of anemia, stunting, balanced nutrition, and healthy eating patterns. The results showed an increase in the cadres' knowledge about the risk factors for stunting, anemia, consumption of iron tablets, and nutritious foods. Knowledge plays a vital role in shaping health behavior (Lawrence Green's concept), and education is an effective strategy for changing the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of adolescents. After the education, all cadres had good knowledge. The cadres are expected to be able to become health promotion agents and sources of information for their peers. The results of the adolescent girls' examination showed that there were still 12% with anemia, 47% underweight, 18% with chronic energy deficiency, and 35% short. Adolescence is a second window of opportunity to improve nutrition, as growth occurs rapidly. Anemia is a risk factor for stunting in early adolescent girls, so preventing anemia plays an important role in reducing stunting. Thus, empowering youth integrated service post cadres is a strategic alternative solution in improving adolescent health, especially in preventing stunting, as well as optimizing adolescent reproductive health

Abstract

Early marriage and teenage pregnancy remain serious public health issues, as they impact the health of mothers and babies, as well as the social and economic well-being of families. In this regard, integrated health service post (Posyandu) cadres play a crucial role as the spearhead of health education, particularly in providing accurate information to adolescents. This community service program aimed to increase the understanding of adolescent Posyandu cadres, toddler Posyandu cadres, and young women regarding the importance of maturing marriageable age and efforts to prevent teenage pregnancy. The program involved 25 adolescent Posyandu cadres, toddler Posyandu cadres, and young women from Simpang Warga Village, Aluh-Aluh District, Banjar Regency. The implementation phase included a pretest, interactive lecture presentation, a question-and-answer discussion, and a case study related to the phenomenon of teenage pregnancy. A posttest and field evaluation were then conducted to assess the extent of the material's implementation. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively to measure the increase in participants' knowledge. The results showed an increase in average knowledge scores after the intervention. The integrated health post (Posyandu) cadres also demonstrated their readiness to apply the material in youth Posyandu activities, particularly in providing education on the health risks of early marriage. Overall, this community service program has proven effective in strengthening the capacity of Posyandu cadres to support the movement to increase the age of marriage and prevent teenage pregnancy. For the program's sustainability, cross-sector collaboration, including with village governments and community health centers, is needed to strengthen promotive and preventive efforts at the community level

Abstract

Adolescents are vulnerable to nutritional problems, especially in disaster-prone areas with limited access to nutritious food. Sigi District, Central Sulawesi, was severely affected by the 2018 earthquake and liquefaction, which disrupted food security and increased instant food consumption. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of balanced nutrition education using a pre-test and post-test approach in improving students’ knowledge of healthy eating at SMK 1 Sigi. The intervention involved 30 students who received lectures and leaflets on the Balanced Nutrition Guidelines. Knowledge was assessed through pre- and post-tests, and differences were analyzed statistically. Results indicated a significant increase in mean knowledge scores from 37.31 ± 15.89 to 65.77 ± 21.20 (p < 0.05). The proportion of students in the poor category decreased from 93.33% to 30%, while those in the fair and reasonable categories increased substantially. These findings highlight that simple educational interventions can enhance adolescents’ nutritional awareness in disaster-affected areas. Therefore, balanced nutrition education should be integrated into school health programs as a sustainable preventive strategy

Abstract

Communication skills in English are an essential competency for nursing students to face the challenges of globalization and international healthcare services. However, many students still struggle to express themselves confidently in real clinical contexts. This community service program aimed to enhance the communication ability of nursing students through English training using the role-play method. The training was conducted with final-year nursing students at Politeknik Sandi Karsa and applied a participatory approach consisting of lectures, demonstrations, role play simulations, group discussions, and reflective evaluations. Various clinical scenarios were designed, such as explaining medication usage, calming anxious patients, and describing vital sign procedures. The program was implemented over two days, with the first day focusing on interactive material delivery and facilitator demonstrations, while the second day emphasized practical role-play performance with direct feedback. A total of 23 students participated actively in this activity. The results indicated a significant improvement in students’ confidence and ability to use English in professional healthcare communication. Participants expressed positive responses toward the method, highlighting that role play reduced speaking anxiety, increased motivation, and fostered readiness for real clinical interactions. The Focus Group Discussion (FGD) confirmed that this method not only improved English proficiency but also enhanced soft skills such as empathy, teamwork, and therapeutic communication. The outcomes suggest that role–play–based English training is an effective strategy to support nursing education and should be integrated regularly into the curriculum to prepare graduates for global healthcare demands.

Abstract

Accurate and well-managed medical records are crucial for ensuring the quality of health services, supporting informed clinical decision-making, and enhancing health information systems. However, many health workers especially those in primary care and early-career stages lack adequate competence in basic medical record management. This community service program aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and skills in fundamental medical record practices as part of preparing professional and reliable health human resources. This program was conducted through a structured educational and training intervention involving a one-day workshop delivered to 45 health workers and students. Activities included lectures, demonstrations, hands-on practice, and group discussions. Pre- and post-training assessments were used to measure improvements in knowledge and practical skills. Observational checklists evaluated participants’ accuracy in completing medical record components, including patient identification, documentation standards, coding basics, and confidentiality procedures. The results showed a significant improvement in participants’ understanding and performance. The mean knowledge score increased from 62.4 (pre-test) to 88.7 (post-test). Practical skills in completing standardized medical record forms improved from 54% to 90% accuracy. Participants reported increased confidence in maintaining documentation quality and understanding the legal and ethical responsibilities related to medical records. Feedback indicated high satisfaction with training methods and relevance to daily practice. This community service program effectively strengthened the foundational competencies required for health workers to manage medical records professionally. The combination of theory and practical sessions proved essential in building both conceptual understanding and hands-on skills. Continuous training and mentoring are recommended to ensure sustained quality and compliance with health information standards.
