Abstract

Anemia remains a persistent public health problem among adolescent girls, significantly affecting their growth, learning capacity, and overall quality of life. This community-based study aimed to evaluate the effects of mung bean extract and soy milk consumption on hemoglobin (Hb) levels among adolescent girls suffering from moderate anemia. The activity was conducted as part of a community health service program focused on improving nutritional awareness and reducing anemia prevalence through affordable local food sources. The intervention involved two adolescent participants with confirmed moderate anemia. One participant consumed mung bean extract, while the other consumed soy milk, each 250 ml twice daily for seven consecutive days. Hemoglobin levels were measured before and after the intervention using a portable hemoglobinometer. The results showed a substantial improvement in Hb concentration for both participants: the mung bean group experienced a 1.3 g/dL increase, and the soy milk group a 1.4 g/dL increase. Both participants reported reduced fatigue, improved concentration, and enhanced general well-being. These findings suggest that plant-based iron sources, such as mung beans and soy milk, are effective and affordable alternatives to conventional supplementation for managing anemia among adolescents. Furthermore, integrating such nutritional education into community outreach programs can raise awareness of balanced diets and iron-rich local foods. This initiative demonstrates that simple, sustainable dietary interventions can significantly contribute to improving adolescent health in the community

Abstract

This community service program aimed to increase the added value of maize through the dissemination of environmentally friendly appropriate technology in Bontolangkasa Selatan Village, Bontonompo District, Gowa Regency. Although maize production in the area is relatively high, farmers predominantly sell their harvest in the form of dried kernels, resulting in low economic returns. The main problems identified included limited access to post-harvest technology, low diversification of maize-based products, weak business management, and insufficient human resource capacity. The program was implemented using a Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) approach to ensure active community involvement at all stages, including problem identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The intervention combined technology transfer, technical training, mentoring, and business management assistance. Environmentally friendly technologies introduced included maize shelling, grinding, and milling machines, accompanied by hands-on training in processing value-added products such as corn chips, popcorn, corn brownies, and roasted maize snacks. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in post-harvest efficiency, with processing time reduced from approximately 16 hours to 2 hours per quintal and production capacity increasing from ±30 kg/hour to ±100 kg/hour. Post-harvest losses decreased by up to 70%, while partner household income increased by approximately 25–30%. In addition, partners developed locally branded and packaged maize-based products and began applying simple financial record-keeping and digital marketing practices. Overall, the program contributed to strengthening local economic resilience by integrating appropriate technology with capacity building and participatory empowerment. This initiative demonstrates a sustainable model for community-based agro-processing development and can be replicated in other maize-producing rural areas

Abstract

This community service activity aimed to increase the added value and economic independence of coastal communities through training in diversifying seaweed-based culinary products. The program was implemented on Salemo Island, Mattiro Bambang Village, Pangkajene and Islands Regency, involving the Independent PKK Mothers Group and the Reski Bersama Seaweed Fishermen Group as partner communities. A participatory approach was applied to ensure active involvement of participants throughout the program, including socialization, technical training in culinary processing, production assistance, and evaluation of outcomes. The training focused on developing innovative seaweed-based food products, such as seaweed meatballs, seaweed nuggets, seaweed barongko, and doi-doi chips made from a seaweed mixture. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in participants’ skills, with approximately 85% of participants able to independently produce processed seaweed products after the training. Product diversification successfully increased the economic value of seaweed, transforming it from a raw material into value-added culinary products with an average selling price of IDR 15,000 per package. In addition to economic benefits, the activity strengthened women’s participation in the productive economy and facilitated the formation of community-level group-based culinary businesses. The findings indicate that seaweed-based culinary diversification training is an effective strategy for enhancing creativity, increasing household income, and promoting economic independence among coastal communities. Furthermore, this program presents strong potential for replication in other archipelagic and coastal regions with similar socio-economic and resource characteristics

Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a major non-communicable disease that continues to increase globally and poses significant challenges to public health, particularly in developing countries. One of the main obstacles in T2DM management is inadequate patient knowledge and suboptimal attitudes toward disease control and self-care. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge and attitudes of patients with T2DM through a structured health education intervention combined with physical activity promotion. The program was implemented using a pre-test and post-test design involving patients with T2DM at a primary healthcare clinic. Educational activities included interactive lectures, discussions, visual media, and guidance on simple and safe physical exercises appropriate for participants’ conditions. Patient knowledge and attitudes were assessed before and after the intervention using structured questionnaires. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in patients’ knowledge, with the mean score increasing from 11.5 in the pre-test to 15.9 in the post-test (p = 0.000). In addition, most participants showed positive attitudes toward healthy lifestyle behaviors related to diabetes management. These findings indicate that health education combined with physical activity promotion is effective in enhancing patients’ understanding and supporting positive attitudes toward self-management of T2DM. Integrating regular and structured educational programs into primary healthcare services is recommended to improve long-term diabetes management and prevent complications

Abstract

Malnutrition remains a major public health problem, particularly in communities where families have limited access to nutrition information and health services. Family knowledge and daily dietary practices play a crucial role in determining nutritional status, especially among children and vulnerable household members. This community service program aimed to improve family nutrition through community-based education and assistance implemented at a primary healthcare center in Makassar, Indonesia. The program involved 30 family respondents and used a structured five-stage approach: preparation, baseline assessment, nutrition education, family assistance and mentoring, and monitoring and evaluation. Educational activities focused on balanced nutrition, local food utilization, family meal planning, and food hygiene, supported by practical demonstrations and continuous mentoring. The program's effectiveness was evaluated using pre- and post-test assessments of nutrition knowledge, balanced diet practices, and food hygiene awareness. The results showed consistent improvements across all indicators after the intervention, indicating enhanced understanding and adoption of healthy nutritional behaviors at the household level. These findings demonstrate that integrating structured nutrition education with hands-on assistance can effectively translate knowledge into practice. Overall, the program highlights the importance of family-centered and participatory approaches in addressing community nutrition problems. Community-based family education and assistance represent a feasible and sustainable strategy to strengthen family capacity, promote healthy dietary behaviors, and support nutrition improvement within primary healthcare settings

Abstract

Hypertension remains a major public health problem with increasing prevalence and significant risk of cardiovascular complications, particularly in primary healthcare settings. Limited community knowledge and low levels of structured physical activity contribute to inadequate non-pharmacological hypertension control. This community service program aimed to improve knowledge, attitudes, and practical skills in hypertension management through structured health education and brisk walking exercise in the working area of Kanjilo Public Health Center. The intervention employed an educational and participatory approach involving 30 adults and older adults with or at risk of hypertension. Activities included baseline assessment, delivery of hypertension education, demonstration and supervised brisk walking practice, and post-intervention evaluation. Results showed substantial improvements in cognitive and behavioral outcomes. The proportion of participants with good knowledge increased from 40.0% to 86.7%, positive attitudes from 46.7% to 83.3%, and understanding of physical activity benefits from 43.3% to 90.0%. Additionally, 83.3% were able to correctly perform brisk walking, and 86.7% expressed commitment to regular physical activity. These findings indicate that integrating health education with moderate-intensity aerobic exercise is feasible and effective in strengthening community-based hypertension control. The program demonstrates potential as a promotive and preventive model within primary healthcare services.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that is still a public health challenge in Indonesia, including in Cimahi City, which has a stunting prevalence of 9.4%. One of the efforts to prevent stunting is increasing exclusive breastfeeding coverage, which is still below the national target. This community service activity aims to increase the capacity of health cadres in breastfeeding counselling knowledge and skills through intensive community-based training. The program will be carried out in March 2025 in RW 06 Melong Village, the working area of the Central Melong Health Centre, Cimahi City, with eight cadre participants. Evaluation was carried out through pre-test and post-test using a questionnaire consisting of 20 questions that had been tested for validity and reliability, as well as participatory observation of changes in attitudes and skills of cadres. The results showed an increase in the average knowledge score of 33.1 points with a significant paired t-test result (p = 0.001). Qualitatively, participants showed increased self-confidence, skills in practising lactation techniques and oxytocin massage, and initiatives to form breastfeeding support groups to sustain education. This program contributes to cadre empowerment and is a potential strategy to support the acceleration of stunting reduction at the community level

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that is still a public health challenge in Indonesia. One of the factors contributing to the high prevalence of stunting is the lack of knowledge of parents, especially mothers, about balanced nutritional intake and proper practices of feeding Complementary Breast Milk (MP-ASI). This community service activity aims to improve the knowledge and skills of mothers under five related to the importance of nutritious food and the practice of giving MP-ASI in accordance with the guidelines of WHO and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia. The methods used are education through interactive counseling, demonstrations of making local food-based MP-ASI, and question and answer sessions. The target of the activity was 40 mothers with children aged 6-24 months in the Posyandu in the assisted area. The evaluation results showed an increase in participants' knowledge by 65% after participating in educational activities. In addition, 80% of participants stated that they were motivated to implement MP-ASI feeding practices that are in accordance with the principles of balanced nutrition. This activity also encourages the use of affordable and nutritious local food resources. With the increase in mothers' knowledge and skills in compiling and delivering MP-ASI, it is hoped that the risk of stunting in early childhood can be minimized. This service activity proves that education-based interventions and direct practices can effectively support programs to accelerate stunting reduction at the community level. The recommendation for the future is to expand the scope of similar activities with cross-sectoral collaboration, especially among health workers and posyandu cadres

Abstract

Hypertension is a global health issue with a high prevalence, including in Indonesia. South Kalimantan has the highest rate at 44.1% among adults aged ≥18 and above. Most individuals with hypertension remain undiagnosed and untreated. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as hypertension exercise (senam hipertensi), effectively reduce blood pressure through relaxation and improved circulation. This community service program aimed to raise awareness and lower blood pressure among Anjir Serapat Muara 1 Village residents through health screening and hypertension exercise. The methods included an initial health survey, blood pressure measurements before and after the intervention, and several sessions of hypertension exercise. A total of 22 female participants were involved in this activity. Results showed that most participants experienced decreased blood pressure after the intervention. For instance, Mrs. S's blood pressure decreased from 159/103 mmHg to 148/100 mmHg, and Mrs. A's from 149/96 mmHg to 126/81 mmHg. Participants also showed high enthusiasm for the activity. In conclusion, the community well-accepted hypertension exercise as a non-pharmacological approach and effectively helps reduce blood pressure, demonstrating potential for sustainable implementation at the community level

Abstract

Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (CHLB) is a critical indicator in improving public health status. However, many families have yet to fully implement CHLB practices in their daily lives, particularly in areas with limited education and access to health information. This community service program aimed to enhance family-level CHLB through a home visit approach conducted by community nurses. The method employed was an educational and participatory approach, where community nurses conducted regular home visits over three months. Each visit included direct health education, environmental observation, discussions with family members, and distribution of educational materials on CHLB. Topics included handwashing with soap, clean drinking water management, environmental sanitation, and prevention of infectious diseases. Based on local health data, the program targeted 30 households in a designated community. The results showed a significant improvement in both knowledge and practice of CHLB among the targeted families. Approximately 85% of the families demonstrated increased scores in the CHLB evaluation post-intervention. Positive behavioural changes were also observed, such as consistent handwashing before meals and after using the toilet, as well as better household waste management practices. These outcomes indicate that the home visit strategy by community nurses is an effective method for promoting health behavior change at the family level. This initiative is expected to serve as a replicable model for other communities, with the support of cross-sector collaboration. It emphasises the importance of family-based empowerment in health promotion and disease prevention efforts
