Abstract

This research explores the types of code-mixing that appear in the conversation and the reasons for their use, drawing on Hoffman's (1991) theoretical framework. The data were taken from a YouTube podcast episode in which Daniel Mananta interviewed Putri Tanjung, a conversation containing numerous instances of Indonesian mixed with English. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach to examine utterances exhibiting code-mixing. The results indicate that the podcast features three main types of code-mixing: intra-sentential, intra-lexical, and changes in pronunciation. Among these, intra-sentential code-mixing appears most frequently, characterized by the insertion of English words or phrases within Indonesian sentences. Based on Hoffman's framework, the primary reasons for code-mixing include discussing specific topics, quoting someone else's statement, emphasizing certain points, using interjections, repeating words for clarification, and clarifying messages for the listener. In summary, the use of code-mixing in this podcast serves both communicative and social functions, illustrating how bilingual speakers express identity, demonstrate fluency, and exhibit adaptability in digital conversations. This research contributes to the understanding of how Indonesian speakers naturally blend languages as part of contemporary media communication

Abstract

This study aims to examine how social bias and toxicity are manifested in hate speech directed at Joe Biden’s speech on YouTube. The object of this study is the comments section of the video entitled “Biden Delivers Memorial Day Message” published in 2024 on Fox News’s YouTube channel. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through in-depth reading and analysis of words, phrases, and sentences found in the comments. The study applies Won’s theory (2001), which identifies two types of bias—gender bias and other biases—and three types of toxicity: hate, insult, and offensive expression. The findings reveal that 11 instances of bias were identified in the comments, with “other biases” being the most dominant type. Additionally, 69 instances of toxicity were found, with insults emerging as the most frequent category. The dominance of other biases and insults suggests that hate comments on social media tend to focus on personal attacks against the speaker as a way of expressing anger and hostility, rather than critically engaging with the content of the speech itself.

Abstract

This study analyzed a TED-Ed video transcript to examine the different sentence types used in the video. The study's objectives were to identify the types of sentences and to represent their structures using tree diagrams. The analysis applied Oshima and Hogue's (1998) theory to classify sentence types based on clause structure, and Burton-Roberts' (2016) framework to construct tree diagrams. A qualitative method was employed, as the data were drawn from a text-based transcript. A total of 40 sentences were collected and analyzed. The findings revealed that complex sentences occurred most frequently (23 instances), followed by simple sentences (13 instances), while compound and compound-complex sentences each appeared twice.

Abstract

This study explores the identity crisis experienced by the main character in the animated film Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken (2023). The object of this study is the film itself, which follows Ruby, a shy and insecure teenager who discovers that she is the descendant of a powerful sea kraken. As she struggles to fit in at high school, Ruby is forced to conceal her true nature. Her life changes dramatically when she learns of her royal lineage and inherits the kraken throne. This research aims to examine the process of identity crisis that Ruby undergoes and how she ultimately resolves it. The story depicts Ruby grappling with her identity due to both external and internal pressures, ultimately achieving a stable sense of self through exploration and self-acceptance. A qualitative method was employed, analyzing dialogue and visual scenes from the film. The theoretical framework is based on Marcia's (1966) theory of identity statuses, which comprises four categories: identity diffusion, foreclosure, moratorium, and identity achievement. The findings reveal that Ruby's identity crisis is triggered by social pressure and familial expectations, and is resolved through a process of self-exploration and acceptance of her dual identity as both human and kraken..
