Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the issues of racial discrimination found in Jordan Peel’s Get Out film, released in 2017. This study used a qualitative method, and the data sources were taken from the scene and dialogues of the film. The theories of racial discrimination from Giddens (2006) and Haney-Lopez (1994) were applied in this study. The result of this study showed racial discrimination not only happens verbally but also by act or even more scary. Racial discrimination can be done by an individual or by a group. Group of the majority will limit the freedom of the minority. If the other African American cannot struggle to stop the discrimination, the other one can start the meaningful action to change. Everyone has the same right and freedom in every country; like the meaning in the title of the film Get Out, people have to fight and get out from the discrimination they experience. Keywords: cinematography, racial discrimination, struggle.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse gender stereotypes and how the main character deal with it that is portrayed in the novel entitled A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum. This study uses the qualitative approach by describing and analysing the characters in the novel. In order to analyse the data, the writer uses theory of gender performativity (Butler, 1999). The result of this study shows the analysis of gender stereotypes on how male and female bodies are differentiated through certain standards of appearance, personality traits, also responsibility that are considered appropriate for both genders. It also describes that the main character can deal with the gender stereotype by understanding herself to take opportunity for growth. Through analysing this study, it concluded that female and male bodies identified being feminine and masculine as they performed certain acts and attributes purpose for female and male.Keywords: Gender Stereotypes, Feminine, Masculine, Novel.

Abstract

The study entitled “The Representation of Gender Stereotype in Boroson’s The Girl with Ghost Eyes Novel” is aimed at describing how gender stereotype representation is portrayed in the novel and analyzing how it affects the main character’s resistances in order to develop her character. In analyzing the problems, a theory from Ridgeway (2000) about one of the elements of stereotype is the one that represents gender and from Foucault (2001) about power resistance are applied. The approach that the writer used in this study was a qualitative approach by analyzing the data in the form of dialogues and narrative text in the story. The study revealed that there are gender stereotype representations such as the main character is portrayed as weak, domestic, and dependent. As the result, it shows that the main character successfully breaks the stereotype by developing her character and skills.Keywords: Character, Gender, Gender Stereotype, Novel, Power Resistance.

Abstract

This study entitled Anxiety and Defense Mechanism in Stephen Chbosky’s Novel The Perks Of Being A Wallflower which discusses anxiety and defense mechanism that focuses on the novel written by Stephen Chbosky. The purpose of this study is to reveal the main character's anxiety through symptoms of anxiety based on Sigmund Freud’s theory. In this study, the writer found several causes of anxiety such as; repression, environment, frustration, and fear were analyzed using Sigmund Freud’s theory of anxiety and defense mechanisms. The main character in the story shows six types of defense mechanisms, such as; repression, denial, formation reaction, projection, regression, and rationalization. Keywords: anxiety, defense mechanisms, literary criticism, psychoanalysis

Abstract

This study is entitled “How I Live Now” by Meg Rosoff, Women's Struggles in Patriarchy.” This study discusses women's struggles and how the protagonists overcome them in Meg Rosoff's novel How I Live Now (2004). Daisy is a teenager from the city who falls in love with her cousin on a farm. However, Daisy has to split up and fight to meet her cousin because of the third world war. After a long struggle, Daisy was finally able to visit her cousin at her home in London. Therefore, this study uses the descriptive method. Qualitative methods are used to describe, analyze, and interpret narrative elements to build an understanding of women's struggles and how women manage them. In further research, the data were analyzed using the theory of Simone de Beauvoir (1949) and Judith Butler (1993) as the basic concepts and framework. This study reveals some of the problems of women's struggles in dealing with issues that gradually change in line with the events in the novel. The problem that raises the patriarchal issue experienced by women in their social life, such as at work and during activities in society, leads to the disclosure of the efforts made by the main character to be able to change the patriarchal treatment received.Keywords: Social system, Women’s struggle, Simone de Beauvoir, Gradual change, Main power

Abstract

The study entitled “Charlotte Anna Perkins Gilman’s Selected Poems: A Reflection of Gender Inequality” aims to find out what aspects or things that can influence gender inequality and examine the effects of gender inequality on women characters portrayed in poems by Charlotte Anna Perkins Gilman. The object of this study is taken from the poems by Charlotte Anna Perkins Gilman. This study uses a qualitative research method, where the data is collected by reading the poems by Gilman, analyzing the issue of gender inequality contained in Gilman's poems, then describing in an analysis. Meanwhile, the data were analyzed in the form of a paragraph of exposition of the stanza which will be taken as the quotes for the case under study using the gender inequality theory by Judith Lorber (2001). The result of the study is showing that the aspects of gender inequality come from economic structure, material aspects, and family. Meanwhile, the effects result in the type of women’s work, sexuality, and emotions. Gilman's poems raise the issue or theme of women.Keywords: Poems, gender,  gender inequality.

Abstract

This study analyzes the struggles of women experienced by the two main characters in the novel How to be Both by Ali Smith. This study uses the Virginia Wolf theory, the inheritance of gender inequality from a mother to her child and will be passed back to her child. The author uses a qualitative approach to analyze and identify the struggles of women in the novel How to be Both. Furthermore, the theory is also used to find out how the main character does to overcome the struggle of a woman. This research has the result that a woman will continue to inherit gender inequality from her parents. Therefore, the mother of the main character in this novel teaches her child to be an independent woman. Unfortunately the mother died when the main character was only 16 years old. The main character is in a crisis because his mother died. Furthermore, the father chose to go to calm himself rather than comfort his son. But the main character tries to learn from what her mother has taught her about being an independent woman. Furthermore, there are several friends from the main character who provide support to face the crisis. Finally the main character managed to get out of his crisis and could accept his mother's death. Keyword:, Woman struggle, Novel, Feminism , Virginia Wolf.

Abstract

The study aims to analyze the depiction of the beauty myth experienced by the main character in Coelho's novel, The Spy (2006). This analysis focuses on how beauty myth is depicted in the main character and how beauty myth succeeses in destroying the main character’s life. The writer uses the theory book, The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf (2002). In writing this study, the writer uses a qualitative method. The results of this study indicate that the image of beauty myth actually occurs in the main character in several ways such as personal and social point of view by giving the main character joy, money, power, jewelries, and valuables. However, quiet opposite, beauty myth also destroys the life of the main character very tragically as she has to be willing to trade all kinds of pleasures such as jewelries, beautiful dresses, and other valuables for sex which she cannot enjoy it even she must be executed without concrete evidence against her in the end of the story.Keywords: , Beauty, Feminism, The Beauty Myth, Women

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types and factors of semantic changes in The Jakarta Post articles. The Jakarta Post is the name of the Indonesian English-language national newspaper headquartered in Jakarta. The Jakarta Post newspaper is published by PT Bina Media Tenggara. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method using two theories, namely the theory of Leonard Bloomfield (1933), to find the type of change in meaning and the theory of Stephen Ullman (1983) to dissect the factors causing the change in meaning. The result showed that there are seven types of meaning changes contained in 34 words in the selected articles of The Jakarta Post. The seven types of meaning change include meaning expansion, meaning narrowing, metaphor, litotes, metonymy, hyperbole, and pejorative. Furthermore, some of the factors contained in the selected news articles are the linguistic cause, psychological cause, need for a new name, social cause, existence of polysemy, metaphorical cause, the taboo of propriety, historical cause, structure of vocabulary, and loss of motivation. Keywords : factors of semantic changes, semantic changes, the Jakarta Post article, types of semantic changes

Abstract

This thesis is titled "Anxiety and Defense Mechanism of The Main Character in Brian Pinkney's Jojo’s Flying Side kick Picture Book". The purpose of this study is to analyze how the anxiety experienced by the main character in Jojo’s Flying Sidekick picture book can influence her subconscious mind to bring up new perceptions about something. In addition, the writer also analyzed the defense mechanism used by the main character in dealing with her anxiety problem by referring to the psychological approach developed by Sigmund Freud. In conducting this research, the writer used the qualitative approach method where the writer uses pictures, dialogues, perspectives, and thoughts contained in the research object as data or analysis foundation. The results showed that in overcoming the anxiety problem, the main character in Jojo’s Flying Sidekick used more than one defense mechanism. Those are regression, intellectualization, and displacement. Keywords: Anxiety, Defense mechanism.
