Abstract

This study discusses conceptual metaphors found in Your Blood, My Bones (2024) by Kelly Andrew. The purpose of this qualitative research is to identify metaphors in the novel and categorize them based on Conceptual Metaphor Theory by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson from a cognitive semantics approach. Moreover, it aims to analyze conceptual mappings essential in understanding the relations between the source and target domains, as well as the meaning these metaphors convey. Additionally, this research relies on the Master Metaphor List, which provides a broader range of conceptual metaphors. Textual data is gathered by highlighting expressions with metaphorical meanings and determining its source and target domains. The data are classified into two types according to the theory, resulting in ontological metaphors as the most common, followed by orientational metaphors. The results show that metaphors are not merely used to embellish words but to understand even the most basic concepts, including emotions, perspective of time, form of communication, visual field, and understanding of life itself.

Abstract

This research examines the translation of political terms in news coverage of President Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment, with a specific focus on Political equivalency applied in the translation process. By comparing parallel news texts, Yonhap News (English source text) and Antara News (Indonesian target text), this research aims to examine the textual and pragmatic levels in translating political terminology in both texts. Purposeful sampling was used for data collection, and the researcher manually identified politically significant words, phrases, and expressions through note-taking.  The research uses Newmark's Free Translation Method, Hans Vermeer's Skopos theory, and Mona Baker's equivalence theory. Findings reveal differences translation process between Yonhap and Antara, particularly in handling emotional tone and ideological intensity. Antara often softens or institutionalizes politically charged expressions from the source text, while maintaining pragmatic and textual equivalence based on Mona Baker's theory. However, selective word-level adjustments led to minor meaning losses.  The research highlights that political news translation extends beyond the textual and pragmatic level, incorporating ideological and political dimensions influenced by the translator's intent and media norms.

Abstract

This study analyzed the accuracy of informative text translation on the bilingual website Berita2Bahasa.com. Using a descriptive mix  method, the research applied Larson's (1998) translation theory and Nababan's (2012) accuracy assessment model. The dataset comprised 20 data points from four political news articles. Findings indicated an average accuracy score of 2.5 on a 3-point scale, with 60% accurate, 20% less accurate, and 3.33% inaccurate translations. The article Indonesians Vote in Regional Election Seen as Test for Prabowo  was the most accurate. This study concluded the importance of maintaining original meaning and cultural context in political news translations.
