Abstract

This study aims to describe how Asghar Ali Engineer reconstructed the position of women in the traditions of primordial society through a contextual reinterpretation of the texts of the Qur’an. This research is of the library (Library Research) type, involving examination and review of data originating from library sources. There are two sources of data: primary data taken from written works by Asghar Ali Engineer, and secondary data obtained from books and journal articles that are aligned with the theme of women's liberation. The results of this study indicate a typology of Asghar Ali Engineer's thought in viewing women, which differs significantly from other thinkers. This distinction arises for two reasons: firstly, he addresses the issues of perspectives that have evolved in the Islamic world regarding women, not solely from a fiqh standpoint but also encompassing philosophical, anthropological, sociological, and historical aspects. Secondly, he presents his writings within the context of the socio-cultural challenges encountered by the Islamic world in modern times. Asghar Ali Engineer argues that Islamic teachings aim to establish a balanced life between men and women, despite historical dominance of the male role that has perpetuated doctrines of inequality between genders.

Abstract

Polygamy continues to generate deep contention within Muslim societies, particularly due to conflicting interpretations regarding its implications for gender justice. While Islamic teachings permit polygamy under strict conditions, its practice often triggers public debate over whether it reinforces patriarchal dominance or violates women’s rights. This study aims to critically examine the contrasting perspectives on polygamy through the lens of two influential figures: Coach Hafidin, who advocates for polygamy through paid mentoring programs, and Musdah Mulia, a leading feminist Muslim scholar who opposes it. Utilizing a qualitative content analysis approach, this research draws on primary data from video documentation—especially the Narasi Newsroom’s broadcast—and complementary secondary materials including academic literature and social media discourse. The findings reveal a fundamental dialectic between a religious-cultural defense of polygamy and feminist critiques that highlight the institutionalization of gender inequality. Coach Hafidin’s arguments frame polygamy as a legitimate, even necessary, religious practice, while Musdah Mulia deconstructs it as a form of gendered injustice that undermines women’s autonomy and dignity. This article underscores the need for contextual and ethical reconsiderations of polygamy, advocating for interpretations of Islamic teachings that prioritize justice, equality, and human dignity in contemporary Muslim life.

Abstract

Women's participation in politics remains a significant issue, despite the emphasis on gender equality in political party administration since 2002 and the encouragement of a 30% legislative quota for women in 2003. Women continue to encounter substantial challenges when entering the political sphere. Data from the Indonesia Statistics of Malang City indicate that the percentage of women in the legislature remains below 30%. In the 2019 Election, political participation among Malang's citizens reached 77.5%. This research investigates whether there are differences in women's political participation in Malang City between the 2019 and 2024 elections and explores the changes in the 2024 Election. Employing the participation concept used by the General Election Supervisory Agency to measure the Election Vulnerability Index, this study adopts an explanative qualitative approach with the women of Malang City as the research population. Data collection was conducted through interviews, documentation, and observation. The data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon statistical test. The research results indicate significant differences in the levels of women's political participation between the 2019 and 2024 Elections, with a significance level of 0.05. Although the political participation of women in these elections is still categorized as low, this is attributed to women's apathy towards political conditions and the perception of politics as a male domain, as well as the complex monitoring report mechanisms. Women perceive the political sphere as harsh and unsuitable, further influenced by stereotypes that emphasize femininity and domestic roles, which encourage passive behavior in political arenas.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the dominant factors of early marriage from the other perspective of married teenage girls. This Research was conducted from May 2022 until January 2023 in Singosari, Malang. Purpose sampling was used to select 20 electable informants. Data was collected directly through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using conventional content analysis methods. This research uses a qualitative method with a content analysis design for exploring topics related to cultural context. The qualitative method with content analysis design in this study uses a traditional approach. The research results showed that multiple factors encourage the decision to marry at an early age from the perspective of adolescent girls including two categories namely "socio-economic conditions" and "individual conditions." Therefore, the problem of early marriage is caused by many factors, and a multidimensional and interdisciplinary approach is needed to develop and implement systematic, effective, massive, and comprehensive steps, including programs to increase knowledge, understanding, and awareness of teenagers, parents and society about the negative impacts of early marriage. The implications of this research highlight the need for more targeted policies and interventions to prevent early marriage, as well as the important role of education and community support in changing perceptions and social norms that support this practice. This research also provides a basis for the development of youth empowerment programs that focus on improving their quality of life and well-being.

Abstract

This article aims to determine the policy and practice of gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) in Islamic universities in Indonesia, with a particular focus on the State Islamic University (UIN) Mataram.  This qualitative research was carried out for 5 months in 2023, using indicators of gender-responsive higher education through observation, interviews, and documentation. Meanwhile, the analysis is carried out through three stages, namely restatement, description, and interpretation. Studies show that UIN Mataram has moved towards gender-responsive higher education.  Some gender-responsive policies have been implemented to create an inclusive campus. The application of GESI can be observed through four dimensions: institutional, three pillars of higher education, institutional governance, and culture of non-violence. Although the university leadership is dominated by men, gender-responsive men can serve as role models to encourage inclusive cultural transformation. UIN Mataram has had a Center for Gender and Child Studies since 2002, which conducts gender programs, activities, and advocacy; gender textbooks to guide teaching and learning in the classroom; the involvement of female lecturers in research; the provision of support for women-friendly villages; the availability of facilities to address practical gender needs; the establishment of UIN Care, which focuses on preventing and responding to sexual violence; and the Center for Literacy and Social Disability Studies and Services (PUSKA LDS), which fosters social inclusion. Factors such as patriarchal culture, religious understanding, and leadership commitment have an impact on the implementation of GESI in the Islamic university.

Abstract

The “motherhood penalty” refers to the negative impact that becoming a mother has on women's overall economic outcomes. This study aims to determine if the severity of this penalty varies for employed and self-employed women across different income levels (poor, middle, and high). Understanding these variations can help policymakers create tailored support systems to promote gender equality and address specific challenges faced by each group. This research fills a gap by examining the extent of the motherhood penalty across women with different incomes and employment statuses. It uses ordinary least squares (OLS) regression on pooled data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) 2000–2014, combining data from 2000, 2007, and 2014 to account for historical economic changes and unique child ownership. The IFLS provides an eight-year work history, crucial for controlling the motherhood penalty mechanism from the forgone experience phase, a feature absent in other surveys. The findings reveal that, compared to childless women, employed mothers earn the least regardless of income level, with a woman's income decreasing as the number of children increases. However, in low-, middle-, and high-paid jobs, only high-paid working mothers experience significantly lower wages compared to their childless counterparts. Self-employed women are less likely to face the motherhood penalty. These results highlight the need for policy interventions to support employed mothers, particularly those in high-income brackets, while recognizing that self-employed women do not experience the same negative financial effects. The study concludes with policy recommendations for decision-makers and stakeholders to address these issues.
