Abstract

Teacher's mental health has become a major issue around the world. This is a preliminary study aimed to explore stress, social support, and resilience as potential values that can predict the mental health of early childhood education (ECE) teachers. Participants in the study included 120 ECE teachers in Yogyakarta who had a minimum of 2 years working duration. The instruments utilized for data collection were General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and The Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). The four scales were distributed to 19 schools in the Yogyakarta area, both online and in person. The collected data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. The study indicated that stress, social support, and resilience jointly affected mental health status by 52,7% (sig .000 < .05). From the three independent variables, resilience acted as the strongest predictor with a correlation coefficient of -.703 and a relative contribution of 44.7%. This study concluded that stress management and resilience can be developed as an intervention construct to improve teachers' mental health. Further implications of the findings of this study have been discussed in the article.

Abstract

Digital media continues to be produced on a large scale. Digital media can be used with various functions; such as for entertainment, search many information, even has a good impact to various of early childhood development aspects. Digital media users are no longer only dominated by adults but also early childhood is the target of digital media marketing which is very popular these days. Therefore, it is necessary to know how to use digital media to stimulate children's language development. The writing of this article was carried out through a literature study where the study was carried out based on information obtained from various types of literature include scientific articles, books and other literary sources. The results of the analysis found that early childhood who had been exposed to digital media had good language development in both receptive and expressive language development. The type of digital media which often accessed by children are animated videos, audio books, fun language game applications and other educational applications. Language development stimulation occurs naturally with the parental control without a good structured planning, however parental guidance is needed to avoid negative effects for children such as immoral videos, excessive screen time that can damage children's eyes and addicted to the use of digital media for entertainment purposes.

Abstract

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the world of education has been extraordinary. Learning at school is not running optimally. As a result, there is a decrease in the ability of knowledge and skills (learning loss) in students. Early childhood loses the opportunity to stimulate all the senses in their learning environment. In the period after the COVID-19 pandemic, early childhood needs activities that are able to increase their ability to build knowledge and skills from their learning experience. This study was conducted to analyze the ecology-based outdoor activity learning strategy in PAUD in the period after the COVID-19 pandemic. It is hoped that cognitive, motor, language and social-emotional development can be further honed and there will be improvements. This research was conducted at an early childhood education institution in the city of Cimahi. Using descriptive qualitative research methods, based on the constructivism paradigm, the researchers collected data through interviews and observations of relevant sources. Data analysis was obtained by induction to facilitate researchers in compiling more accurate research results. The triangulation technique was carried out to check the validity of the data by comparing the results of interviews and observations. Through FGD researchers get final conclusions that are relevant to the conditions in the field. The results of this study show that most of the cognitive, motor, language and socio-emotional development of early childhood after the pandemic experienced significant development through ecological-based outdoor activity learning strategies. The results of this study can be used as reference material in determining various learning strategies adapted to the situation and conditions of each institution.

Abstract

Child development involves expected abilities to evolve at various age stages, encompassing motor, cognitive, language, emotional, and social aspects. These fundamental abilities serve as the building blocks for more intricate development. Delays in achieving these milestones can potentially impede later-stage development. This study aims to develop a suitable developmental screening tool for Indonesian children aged 2-4 years, facilitating accurate early detection of developmental delays. The instrument's development involves five stages: (1) Test Conceptualization, (2) Test Construction, (3) Test Tryout, (4) Analysis, and (5) Revision. In the first stage, The Gesell's developmental concept was used. Four child psychologists reviewed the instrument's content during the test construction phase, followed by a feasibility test conducted on four mothers. From an initial formulation of 91 items for ages 2-3 years and 85 items for ages 3-4 years, expert judgment and cognitive interviews led to the elimination of certain items, resulting in 71 items for ages 2-3 years and 75 items for age 3-4 years in the tryout version. The  tryouts were performed on mothers who met the following inclusive criteria: have  children aged 2-4 years with no history of prenatal, post-natal, or developmental delays, not clinically diagnosed psychological problem,  and familiar with the Google form. One hundred eighty-six mothers (age range = 23-48 years, mean = 31 years) participated in the study. The tryout demonstrated the initial validity of all aspects of children's development aged 2-4 years (content validity index range = 0.83–1.00) and  good reliability (range of internal consistency coefficient = 0.562-0.768) for each developmental aspect. Item analysis indicated that only a small number of items need to be eliminated or revised in both age groups.  The results suggest the instrument is a promising tool to measure children development aged 2-4.

Abstract

The development of memory and executive function in infants is significant for the development of the same aspects at a later stage since during this stage of development, infants are actively developing their core executive function and memory skills. However, research on these two aspects in infants aged 12-24 months in the Indonesian context is still rare. Furthermore, the availability of screening instruments that can be used by mothers to monitor the development of the two aspects is limited. This study aims to develop a method of screening on memory development and executive function that mothers can use for their babies aged 12-24 months. By knowing their child's development in the domain-specific exhibited by the Deferred imitation (DI) task and the A-not-B task, mothers can better understand and obtain feedback regarding their child's development milestones, particularly memory development and executive function. Mothers (N=21) who were involved in this study, filled in pre and post-tests on memory and executive function development, received training to conduct screening by carrying out those 2 tasks to their babies. The mothers were asked to fill in the maternal responsiveness scale to find out the extent of the mother's response rate during interactions with their babies and to see the relationship between their responsiveness and the results of the screening. This study employed a within-subject pre-and posttestdesign. Data were analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Qualitative data were gathered through Focus Group Discussion to explore the experiences of mothers when conducting tasks and screening on their babies. The results of this study indicate that the screening method can help maternal participants identify the emergence of memory abilities and executive skills. The screening method used is quite easy and can be carried out by the participants in daily life. However, they need to read the module several times to understand the procedures. Additional analysis showed that maternal responsiveness was associated with a child's better ability to shift from condition A to condition B, but did not confirm an association with DI.

Abstract

Historical subjects are mandatory for kindergarten students. One of the best examples is to recognize every national hero of Indonesia to nurture high devotion to patriotism. But there are some problems such as the laziness to read some textbooks and the difficulties to memorize some long materials that sometimes come up to the student. With the use of the development of technology, this study aims to introduce several heroes in Indonesia through learning media which is a learning application based on augmented reality. This application can help kindergarten school learners to increase their insight or knowledge, especially on historical subjects. This research is using R&D (Research and Development). The main focus of this study is to design a digital learning application about national heroes in Indonesia. There are some features offered on this app including 3D (three dimensions) animations, audio features (audio information), and text is written materials based on augmented reality. 25 kindergarten school students responded and answered the questionnaire. The use of HEAR as a learning media can be increasing kindergarten students’ reading intention and knowledge, especially on how they recognize the Indonesian hero figure. This innovation is designed to help the student to recognize the national heroes of Indonesia which are integrated with technology so that they can use it anytime and anywhere

Abstract

Instructional media is a fundamental need for teachers, especially those who teach early childhood, in transmitting messages as taught material. Early childhood teachers have certain preferences when developing (by design) or utilizing instructional media, especially in the realm of digitalization. These preferences are tailored to the learning needs of early childhood. This study aims to find the preferences of early childhood teachers in utilizing or developing instructional media. This quantitative research uses a systematic survey (percentage) approach involving 30 early childhood teachers as respondents. The results showed that there was a dominant preference of early childhood teachers in optimizing instructional media. These preferences include LCD Projectors, traditional whiteboards, wall magazines, Microsoft Word, self-drawing, smartphone cameras, voice recordings, WhatsApp Call, public television, YouTube live broadcasts, Zoom, Capcut, Google, WhatsApp, Google Form and Google Classroom. This means that early childhood teachers' understanding of instructional media is good, but needs to be strengthened in their digitization capabilities. Thus, this research can be used as an alternative reference in empowering early childhood teachers in the future.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the construct of a mother who is a convict. Imprisoned mothers have challenges that are different from mothers in general, such as limited carrying out of their motherly role in raising children, unclear mother's status both for herself and for her children, and agreed parenting identities. The number of female prisoners is increasing, but studies that focus on female prisoners in negotiating their maternal identity are very limited. In Indonesia, very few studies have been conducted on the upbringing of convict mothers, in contrast to western countries, where much research has been carried out on imprisoned mothers. This article uses post-structuralist feminist theory, it is hoped that problems will be more open by understanding this theory. The case study approach was the method used in this study, with the subject of two convict mothers who were in class 2A Women's Prison in Bandung. The research subjects were mothers who were separated from their children and mothers who brought their children to prison. Data collection was consucted through interviews. The results of this analysis found that the mother who is a convict tries to be the main caregiver for her child by negotiating her role through nurturing, caring, fulfilling needs and delaying her physical presence.

Abstract

Internationally, the profession of preschool educators is more dominated by females than males. Male educators in early childhood education (ECE) are very rare, however, the presence of male and female educators in ECE will be very meaningful in the balance of gender construction in early childhood. This study aims to explore the perceptions of a male teacher at ECE regarding his profession as an ECE teacher as well as a dance teacher. This research used a narrative qualitative approach, conducted in a kindergarten in Bandung that has a male teacher who also teaches dancing extracurriculars. Through the experiences and chronology of the teacher's career journey, the researcher tried to understand the reasons and factors that make the teacher in love and comfortable with his current profession, despite the fact about gender stereotypes in society. The teacher even preferred to continue his career at ECE even though he had been accepted by PPPK (Government Employee with Employment Agreement) at another educational unit (Junior High School). The results of this study indicate that from the male teacher's perspective: (1) working in an ECE environment with preschoolers is more dynamic that encourages creativity, (2) in line with his passion which increases his work engagement and well-being, and (3) there are opportunities for his self-development. Experiences and a supportive environment made a male teacher finally found his passion and chose to work at ECE.
