Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine relation between growth and unemployment in Congo. To this, the error correction model ARDL is used. The estimation results show the existence of relation significantly negative between growth and long term unemployment on the period 1991.Q1-2016.Q1. Such a result accounts an unemployment existence of a structural character in Congo. In this regard, the resolution of unemployment problem in Congo goes through the policies of the offer. In other words, the Congolese government must put in place policies aiming to increase productivity of production factors. To be specific, the government can favor the augmentation of a prospective GDP, urging companies with important manpower to invest, by an increase of productive public investment. Keywords: growth, employment, ARDL, CongoJEL Classification: E23, E24, C32, 055

Abstract

Many times ASEAN countries experienced economic crisis in 1997/1998 and financial crisis in 2008. The similar patterns of cisis among those countries make some researchers conduct research of single currency unification. This research has a purpose to analyze the impact of ASEAN 5’s currencies (Rupiah, Ringgit, Singapore Dollar, Baht, and Peso) to a currency shock in the other ASEAN countries. The concept of this study uses the exchange rate approach pegged of ASEAN countries with American Dollars and Singapore Dollars. Furthermore, this research analyzes a symmetrical currency response to the currency shock in the other countries. The method of the study comes closer short-term and long-term models of Vector Auto regression (VAR) by using monthly data in real exchange rate variables from 1990 to 2019. The result of impulse response function (IRF) shows that responses to ASEAN currency pegged the currency to Singapore Dollars rather than US Dollars

Abstract

The Russian military invasion of Ukraine surprisingly impacted the world's geopolitical situation. The conflict that started at the end of February is ongoing, potentially disrupting economic and trade performance in the global sector, including Indonesia. The battle has the opportunity to increase some food commodity prices, thus hampering the total imports carried out. In addition, other leading commodities (non-oil and gas) such as gold, oil, and coal will also experience significant turmoil due to the conflict that has continued to heat up recently. The study provides an overview of the systemic impact on Indonesia's economic conditions by predicting the short-term possibilities. This study investigates the Russia-Ukraine conflict's initial estimate of the net import value of the two countries and other trading partners. This study uses independent variables, namely oil and gas commodities and gold prices over eleven years (2000-2021). Error Correction Model (ECM) is an analytical method used in this study. This research expects to give an overview to academia, business, industry, and the government in anticipating Indonesia's economic and trade performance to the crisis in Russia and Ukraine. Thus, it is hoped that this research can be used as an illustration of the government to make decisions in allocating import values amid the polemic between Russia and Ukraine so that trade values can be optimal.

Abstract

During the pandemic, development progress is hindered by budget constraints. Meanwhile, the business sector's contribution to development is minimal and charitable, with no significant impact. To address this issue, a program called "Kembang Jawara" has been introduced to optimise Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding for development programs. This study aimed to explore the funding innovation called "Kembang Jawara" through a case study. The primary data was gathered through focused group discussions and interviews with the Regional Development Planning, Research and Development Agency of Subang Regency. The secondary data was sourced from proposals, work plans, reports, and policies related to Kembang Jawara. The analysis was conducted in four stages: data collection, data reduction, data presentation and visualisation, and conclusion drawing. The program involves compiling an inventory of development programs, coordinating with regional apparatus and the provincial government, socialising with potential CSR partners, and hosting a CSR Awards ceremony. In 2020, 13 companies contributed Rp4.930 billion to the program; in 2021, this increased to 15 companies, contributing a total of Rp8.565 billion. This innovative initiative is in line with SDG 17 and has the potential to be replicated by other local governments. However, areas of improvement include enhancing communication with the business sector, providing detailed information on development programs and CSR schemes, and recording program activities through a website-based application.

Abstract

This paper tried to estimate the effect of regulation in the plywood export market, not only on the quantity export but also on the revenue earned from the product. Using panel data of this market from 2000 to 2014 and involving 58 countries as trading partner, gravity model which had been used in many studies of international trade will be adapted. Three models which were used in this study, such as pooled least square, fixed and random effect model, found an indication that quantity exported and revenue earned after the implementation of the regulation was less than before. In pooled regression model, the quantity and revenue from plywood export decreased more than 95 per cent. In addition, fixed and random effect model showed similar result with the pooled regression model. Keywords: Timber Legality Verification System (SVLK), gravity model JEL Classification: F14; F23

Abstract

Formulating policies to enhance human well-being requires an urgent need to understand the drivers of human well-being. Therefore, the current study has proposed the socio and economic factors to investigate the main and moderate role of trade openness on Human Development for newly industrialized economies over 1990-2021. Current study shows the association between gross national income, urbanization, trade openness, labor force participation, foreign direct investment, and financial development. This study employs the fully modified and dynamic ordinary least square for the reliable outcome. Empirical findings show that gross national income, urbanization, financial development, and labor force participation increase human development. Likewise, the long-term association of FDI has an insignificant impact on human development. Moreover, the main effect of trade openness significantly contributes to human development. In contrast, the moderate effect of openness with financial development and labor force shows a significant improvement in human development. Similarly, the moderate effect with FDI shows an insignificant contribution to human development. This study proposes the imperative policy implications for the NIC economies to boost human development.

Abstract

Oil price volatility and economic growth relation have been well established in the extant literature without reference to divergent across the countries and sectors. The underlying problem of how the effects of volatility in oil prices vary across economic sectors and how they may have evolved is of particular importance. This paper therefore discusses, using the autoregressive distributed lag model (ARDL), the effects of volatility in oil prices on the growth of the real sector in Nigeria. The results show that oil price volatility has a positive effect on the selected three real economic sectors (agriculture, manufacturing, and transport) in both the short and long term. Results demonstrate that changes in the real sector are subject to changes in oil prices and that shifts in crude oil prices have a positive and insignificant impact on the drive of each sector. Besides, the supply of money has an adverse and significant impact on the agriculture and transport sectors. Accordingly, the paper offers that the Nigerian government should employ the monetary and fiscal policies policy framework aiming at providing foreign investors with special offers to invest in agriculture; and need to offer interest-free loans and subsidies to the manufacturers, transporters, and farmers.

Abstract

The study examined the interaction among income inequality, economic growth, and poverty with a view of assessing the extent of inclusiveness of growth in selected African countries. Using a dataset from World Development Indicators (WDI) and Standardized World Income Inequality Dataset (SWIID), the study adopted Vector AutoRegression (VAR) method in its econometric analysis. Its findings show that only "West" African countries exhibit partial traits of inclusiveness of growth. Thus, the study recommends the provision and implementation of distributional and growth-oriented macroeconomic policies, as well as investment in public infrastructure to spread the benefits of growth to all in African countries.

Abstract

Intra-industry trade between Indonesia and some neighbouring countries like the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam can be characterised as an imperfectly competitive market and be driven by increasing returns to achieve economies of scale. This research investigates the dynamics of Indonesia's intra-industrial trade in the manufacturing industry with ASEAN-4 countries, namely the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, from 2005 to 2021. The independent variables used are the difference in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), real exchange rate, and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). We also estimate the Grubel-Lloyd Index and decompose the intra-industry trade either dominated by vertical or horizontal intra-industry trade. The data is then analysed by the panel data method. Our findings show that intra-industry trade taking place in the region has a strong level dominated by vertical intra-industry trade, resulting in goods traded of different quality. Next, the variable of difference in GDP has a significant negative effect on intra-industry trade, the variable of the real exchange rate has a significant positive impact, and FDI has a positive and not significant effect.
