Abstract

Many times ASEAN countries experienced economic crisis in 1997/1998 and financial crisis in 2008. The similar patterns of cisis among those countries make some researchers conduct research of single currency unification. This research has a purpose to analyze the impact of ASEAN 5’s currencies (Rupiah, Ringgit, Singapore Dollar, Baht, and Peso) to a currency shock in the other ASEAN countries. The concept of this study uses the exchange rate approach pegged of ASEAN countries with American Dollars and Singapore Dollars. Furthermore, this research analyzes a symmetrical currency response to the currency shock in the other countries. The method of the study comes closer short-term and long-term models of Vector Auto regression (VAR) by using monthly data in real exchange rate variables from 1990 to 2019. The result of impulse response function (IRF) shows that responses to ASEAN currency pegged the currency to Singapore Dollars rather than US Dollars

Abstract

This study aims to identify the factors that influence switching behavior of customers in selecting Sharia banking services in Indonesia. This study employed a positivistic research paradigm to explain and predict the determinants of switching behavior of banking customers. In this study, a quantitative approach was adopted to examine the relationship between variables, determine variable causality, generalization, and prediction. The results of data analysis indicate that the important factors that determine switching behavior are religiosity, internet banking, and employee hospitality. Additionally, conditions that can hinder switching behavior are the fact that customers are increasingly rational. Lastly, the strategy that need to be developed by Islamic banking related to switching behavior is to maintain customer loyalty. The managerial implication of this research is that efforts are needed to increase understanding of Islamic banking to a higher level of education through a rational approach. Future research is expected to include price variables, number of offices, and other rational-based services to explore in more detail the determinants of switching behavior. Keywords: Switching behavior, Banking customer, Sharia banksJEL Classification: D91; G21; G41

ASEAN countries that became the objects of this study included Indonesia,Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar. The data used in the study were data from the period 2012-2017. These data included percentage of population living below the poverty line, food security index, food price index, contribution of agricultural sector to gross domestic product, economic growth rate and population. These data are available in the Asian Development Bank publication. Data analysis method used was panel data with least square method.  The results of this study concluded that food security rate, economic growth, and contribution of the agricultural sector to gross domestic product have a significant but negative impact on poverty rates. Abstract

This study aims to estimate the determining factors of individual happiness of the head of household in Indonesia in 2014 using cross-section data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) batch 5 of 2014 with 5092 respondents estimated by a logit model. The Logit model was chosen due to the ordinal response variable and the dependent variable using a scale of 0 and 1. This study tested 7 independent variables using binary logistic regression. The results showed that the economic factors of employment and income had a significant effect on happiness. It implies that there was no Easterlin Paradox in Indonesia. Individual characteristic factors, comprising age, duration of education, and health showed an influence on the head of household’s level of happiness. This research found that gender and area of residence variables did not show significant results. In other words, the level of happiness of the head of household was not determined by the gender; male or female. The level of happiness of the head of household living in rural or urban areas also showed no effect.

Abstract

When policies and programmes are designed and implemented successfully by governments, it tends to improve development indices such as reducing poverty, when governance is good. The paper examined the impact of governance, public expenditure and trade on poverty reduction in some selected Sub-Saharan African countries, using Pool Mean Group (PMG) with data spanned for 21 years (1996-2016). The results show a long-run association between governance, public expenditure, trade and poverty reduction in SSA. Also, control of corruption, political stability, government expenditure, and trade reduces poverty by enhancing the Human Development Index (HDI) in the long run. This outcome implies that improving governance (control of corruption and political stability) is vital for reducing poverty as it increases the adequate performance of public expenditure and as well as promote trade in SSA.

Abstract

The aims to determine steps to increase the labor force absorption of the Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) sector. This research using the structural equation model partial least square (SEM-PLS) method with cross-section secondary data within provinces (34 provinces) from the 2016 Economic Census (2017 census). The analysis results showed that the labor force absorption of MSEs in Indonesia was directly and positively affected by the number of MSEs and the income of MSEs. The number of MSEs in Indonesia was positively affected by the education level of MSEs owners. Meanwhile, the income of MSEs was positively affected by the use of the internet (digital technology) of MSEs. The education level of MSE owners was the only factor that had an indirect positive effect on the labor force absorption of MSEs. Increasing the labor force absorption of MSEs in Indonesia can be promoted by strengthening the entrepreneurship curriculum to foster an entrepreneurial spirit in students, especially at the higher education level, to grow the startup businesses. In addition, digital marketing partnerships with various  e-commerce platforms providing marketplaces and online courier service platforms to increase MSEs income are encouraged. Keywords: Entrepreneurship Education, Startup Business, MarketplaceJEL Classification: J23, M20, O17

Abstract

The research to understand variable influence economic and social variables which include investment, port infrastructure, and labour on the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) in ASEAN countries. The decider of the sample is based on Crossection and Time series data of eight countries in ASEAN on the 2015-2018 period. Source of research data were obtained from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF). This study uses panel data analysis method with a fixed-effect model. Based on the results of the partial test (t-test), the investment variable showed a positive effect on the Logistics Performance Index (LPI). While for Labor and Economic Stability are negative effects on the Logistics Performance Index (LPI). And port infrastructure is no effect on the Logistics Performance Index (LPI). Also, based on simultaneous results (F-Test) indicates investment, port infrastructure, labour and economic stability have a significant effect on the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) in ASEAN countries on 2015-2018.
