Abstract

Global economic instability is a challenge for the domestic economy, especially for emerging countries. A higher Federal Funds Rate for longer affects economic stability. Bank Indonesia plays a role in determining the BI rate to achieve economic goals. Indonesia as an open economy needs to consider external aspects in determining monetary policy. The Augmented Taylor Rule framework can facilitate this need to know about the determination of the BI rate. This study aims to identify the behavior of Bank Indonesia in response to the Fed's policy and the phenomenon of higher for longer. The research period was conducted from 2000Q2 - 2023Q4 using secondary data. The results of the analysis show that overall Bank Indonesia responds to an increase in the BI rate when the inflation gap increases, the output gap increases, and the rupiah depreciates. These conditions are following the Taylor Rule framework. However, in the higher for longer period there is a change in which the determination of the BI rate depends only on the output gap and the real exchange rate. The inflation gap variable has no significant effect on the determination of the BI rate. In the higher for longer period, the prioritized economic goal is a comprehensive economic recovery.

Abstract

Investment in transport infrastructure is one of the important actions to accelerate regional development because it will open access among regions. Thus, it can lead to accelerating economic growth. This study aims to analyze the short-run and long-run relationship between economic growth and air transportation in ASEAN-10 countries. The data used in this study are the number of air transport passengers, air transport carrier, air freights, interactions between passengers and air transport carrier, and gross domestic product growth sourced from World Bank in a year period of 2002-2017. Panel ARDL is used in this analysis. Based on the specification, estimation, and examination of the model, the Panel ARDL is the best choice model. The Panel ARDL model shows that in the short term there is no significant relationship between air transportation and economic growth, but in the long term explains, except air freight, that air transport passengers, air transport airline, the interaction between passengers and air transport airlines have a significant effect on ASEAN-10 economic growth. This study emphasizes that to increase economic growth, increase in air transportation services is an important factor.

Abstract

Indonesia and Nigeria are considered suitable candidates for comparative analysis because of their similarities in natural endowments and geographical attributes, demography, economic structure, sociocultural diversity, and political history. Indonesia began to achieve rapid growth in the 1980s while Nigeria did not. During that period, economic policies in the two countries diverged, and this led to sustained economic growth in Indonesia and prolonged economic decline in Nigeria. However, as the countries transitioned to democratic rule in 1999 following the collapse of authoritarian regimes, some aspects of their political and economic trajectories revealed a trend towards convergence. Using the descriptive comparison of secondary data, the researcher analyzed those converging paths and the areas where the divergence continues. The study concludes that despite exhibiting more signs of convergence and dealing with similar challenges, the impact of initial conditions is likely to influence the developmental efforts in Indonesia and Nigeria.

Abstract

This research explores the role of inequality because inequality has long-term effects on social and economic conditions and has an impact on the decentralization process. There are two models developed in which inequality is the regressor of regional income and inequality is the regressor. The panel seemingly unrelated regression is applied to produce consistent coefficient parameters. The results of research on model 1 show that inequality has a negative effect on regional income and on model 2 shows that fiscal decentralization with government spending has a positive effect on inequality and special allocation funds have a negative effect on inequality. The implication of research is that fiscal decentralization can reduce the level of inequality if it is transferred and prioritizes poor or disadvantaged areas.

Abstract

ASEAN is a region with a high level of economic growth. However, ASEAN region is also faced with several important issues in the energy sector such as high energy consumption growth, fossil energy dependency, and fluctuations in energy prices. Energy efficiency is viewed as the proper way to enhance energy security. The concept of energy intensity (ratio of energy consumption per GDP) is used to describe the level of energy efficiency. The objective of the research is to analyze factors that influence energy intensity in ASEAN region. This study uses secondary data in the nine Southeast Asian countries in 2001-2014. This study employs an analysis with Arellano Bond Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) panel data to analyze factors that affect energy intensity. The results of the study find that the variable of GDP per capita and energy prices have a significantly negative effect on energy intensity. The variable of energy consumption per capita has significantly positive effect on energy intensity. The variables of trade openness and foreign direct investment have no significant effect on energy intensity

Abstract

This study aims to measure the technical efficiency of companies in the sugar industry in Indonesia and determine the factors that influence the technical efficiency scores of these companies. The data was used in the form of time series for 2010-2014 with observations of 340 companies. The Bootstrap data envelopment method with the assumption of a return to scale variables and input orientation is used to measure the company’s technical efficiency score. The results will be analyzed further as the dependent variable with Tobit regression for the technical efficiency determinant analysis stage. Based on the analysis results, the average score of the technical efficiency of the sugar industry is 0.67. Based on Tobit’s estimation, the location factor is significant to the technical efficiency score, while the export, import, company ownership, market concentration, and firm size are not significant Keywords: Data Envelopment Analysis Bootstrap; Sugar Industry; Technical Efficiency, Tobit RegressionJEL Classification: O14, L66

Abstract

This study aims to analyze monetary and macroprudential policies through risk taking banks in Indonesia. The importance of risk-taking channel analysis in the transmission mechanism of monetary policy is that it is a newer route and is different from the bank lending channel that has been previously proposed in monetary policy theory. This risk-taking channel affects the supply of credit by banks through the bank's decision to channel credit based on changes in bank behavior in dealing with bank risk. The study also recognizes the impact of monetary and macroprudential policies and the role of the characteristics of banks, as well as macroeconomic conditions such as economic growth and inflation rates. The analytical method used is fixed effects through panel data in the period 2012-2019. This study uses 3 types of proxies to measure risk, first with the Z-score measurement method, second with the ratio of the number of risky assets to total assets and third, the ratio of the number of bad loans to total assets. The results of this study found that the impact of monetary policy and macroprudential policy significantly affects bank risk. In addition to the main variables, this study also uses GDP growth and inflation variables as control variables for macroeconomic conditions that significantly effect on bank risk, liquidity, and bank size variables as control of bank characteristics which also significantly affect bank risk. So, it can be concluded that the risk-taking channel exists in Indonesia’s banking.

Abstract

The study determined the costs and returns involved in small-scale groundnut oil processing of two varieties in Gombe metropolis. Twelve markets were purposively selected for their popularity in groundnut oil processing, where 90 processors were selected by simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and were analysed using farm budget model, profitability index and t-test analysis. The results revealed that Cost of shelled groundnut constituted the major (92.3% and 91.6%) components of processing costs (P<0.01) for RMP-12 and Ex-dakar respectively. The  gross ratios, fixed ratios and operating ratios of the two groundnut varieties were < 1, meaning that the business was profitable. Also, the returns per naira invested of the respective groundnut varieties was ₦ 0.17 ($ 0.0006) and ₦ 0.25 ($ 0.0009) significant (P<0.01). Although, the RMP-12 variety gave higher gross income, but the Ex-dakar variety gave higher profit of ₦ 7,428.80 ($ 26.20) per tonne per week (P<0.01). To achieve higher profit, the traders should embark on Ex-dakar variety as the main resource input. They should also have access to formal loans so as to improve productivity and efficiency. Keywords: Comparative costs, Groundnut, Small-scaleJEL Classification: D24; D61
