Abstract

Alcohol is a depressant that interferes with tear production, disrupting its balance and leading to insufficient eye lubrication and gradual onset of dry eyes. To determine the effect of alcohol on tear production. Eighty (80) eyes of 40 healthy subjects between 18-30 years. The baseline measurement of the mean tear production was taken with Schirmer tear strip before the commencement of the work. The subject ingested a bottle of Smirnoff ice drink (33 cl volume with 5.5% alcohol). The mean tear production was then measured at 30, 60 and 90-minutes intervals. The mean value before the intake of alcohol and 30, 60, and 90-minutes intervals after the intake in both eyes (OD and OS) were measured. The baseline value for OD was 24.05±6.41, which increased to 26.88±7.43 in 30 minutes. Thereafter, the value decreased to 25.93±6.64 and 25.58±6.22 respectively at 60 and 90 minutes intervals. The baseline value for OS was 23.13±6.62 and this also increased to 26.13±7.45, 30 minutes after intake; and 24.78±6.65 and 24.88±6.51 respectively at 60 and 90 minutes intervals. Alcohol intake has an effect on tear production leading dry eyes syndrome.

Abstract

Jatropha gossypiifolia L. (Euphorbiaceae), widely known as “bellyache bush,” is a medicinal plant largely used throughout Africa and America. Several human and veterinary uses in traditional medicine are described for different parts and preparations based on this plant. The protective potentials of ethanol leaf extract of Bryophyllum pinnatum against gentamicin induced biochemical injury in Wistar albino rats were evaluated using serum biochemical parameters. Twenty-five male albino rats were divided randomly into five groups A to E. Groups C and D received 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg Jatropha gossypiifolia leaves extract respectively. Groups A and B were fed with chow (normal and positive controls) while Group E received 100 mg/kg of Vitamin C. Biochemical injury was induced in rats in groups B-E with gentamicin (i.p) at the dose of 80 mg/kg body weight on the 16th day of study. The rats were then fasted for 48 h and sacrificed by cervical dislocation. Serum was collected for biochemical analysis using standard methods and analytical biochemical kits. There was a significant increase in the serum levels of AST, ALT and ALP of the rats administered with gentamicin (Group B - positive control) compared to the Group A- normal control. However, treatment of rats with 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg body weight of ethanol leaf extract of Jatropha gossypiifolia L significantly decrease these biochemical parameters compared to Group B (p < 0.05). Also, there was a significant increase in the serum levels of conjugated bilirubin and total bilirubin in Group B compared to the normal control. Rat pre-treated with 200 and 300 mg/kg body weight of extract showed significant decrease in the conjugated and total bilirubin compared to the non-treated rats in Group B (p <0.05). Serum level of urea and creatinine significantly increased in Group B compared to normal control. Rats in groups C and D pre-treated with 200 and 300 mg/kg body weight of extract showed significant decrease in the levels of urea and creatinine compared to Group B (p <0.05). There was significant decrease in the serum levels of albumin and total protein of the rats administered with gentamicin compared to the normal control. Rats pre-treated with 200 and 300 mg/kg body weight of extract showed significant increase compared rats in non-treated Group B (p <0.05). The results obtained from this study shows that the ethanolic leaf extract of Jatropha gossypiifolia L has protective functions against gentamicin-induced hepatic and nephrotic damage in Wistar albino rats.

Abstract

Background: Writing-speed plays a crucial role in various academic and professional disciplines and it is an unavoidable part of students’ activities. Previous studies have explored different factors that influence writing-speed among students, However, there is dearth of literature on the role of handedness and grip strength on writing-speed among this population. Aims: To investigate the association among each of handedness, grip strength and writing-speed. Methods: 368 undergraduates of Bowen University, were recruited into this cross-sectional study using consecutive sampling technique. Mean, frequency, percentages and pie charts were used to describe the data; Mann-Whitney U, Spearman rank correlation and Chi-square test was used for inferential analysis at alpha level set at 0.05. Results: Mean age of participants’ 20±2 years and most of the participants were right handed (77.7%). There was significant relationship (p=0.00) between age and grip strength. There was no significant relationship between age (p=0.164) and writing-speed and between grip strength (p=0.108) and writing-speed. While there were no significant differences between grip strength (p=0.062) or writing-speed (p=0.116) and handedness, significant differences were found between gender and both grip strength (p=0.025) and writing-speed (p=0.00). There was significant association (p=0.00) between handedness and gender. Conclusion: The study found that males had stronger grip strength and faster writing speeds than females, likely due to physiological differences and varying social experiences. Handedness did not significantly impact grip strength or writing speed, suggesting other factors like practice are more influential. Age correlated positively with grip strength but did not affect writing speed, likely due to muscle development. The association between gender and handedness may reflect both biological and cultural influences. These findings highlight the importance of considering gender and age in motor skills research.

Abstract

Helminthiasis is a parasitic infection known to infect low-income population group and people with poor personal hygiene worldwide. Helminths (Worms) such as roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and the flat worms (schistosome) are among others that causes heminthiasis. Infections with these worms results to mild, chronic and severe illness especially in an endemic area. This study reports the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthiasis and schistosomiasis in Adamawa Northern Senatorial District that are made up of five Local Areas namely, Maiha, Mubi North, Mubi South, Michika and Madagali Local Government Areas out of which two communities where sampled from each LGA. Normal saline direct wet preparation, formol-ether concentration and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) techniques were used to analyze stool samples. Centrifugation and filtration technique were used for urine analysis, Out of 2,808 stool and urine samples examined from 1,404 participants, an overall prevalence of 565 (40.2%) were recorded. Out of these, soil-transmitted Helminthiasis account for 239 (17.0%) while Schistosomiasis infections was 326 (23.2%) respectively. The highest prevalence of Soil-transmitted helminthiasis by community was recorded in Bororo (23.6%) and lowest in Pakka (12.5%) communities. While highest and lowest prevalence of Schistosomiasis were observed in Pakka and Kuda with 30.0% and 15.7% respectively and there was statistical significant difference (p<0.05) between the two infections. The study further revealed that farmers (27.1%) had highest infection with STH while students (38.2%) had more infections with Schistosomiasis and there was no significant statistical differences at (p>0.05). Differences were observed between STHs and Schistosomiasis in relation to occupation. The distribution of each parasite during the study also revealed that, high prevalence (18.5%) of S. haematobium was recorded while Strongyloide stercoralis had the lowest prevalence (2.9%) with significant differences at (P<0.05). Total co-infection of 5.2% was also recorded for STHs and Schistosomiasis. Similarly, analysis of stool sample using PCR further revealed the presence of A. lumbricoides, Hookworms and T. trichiura. Therefore, the findings has reveal the presence of helminthiasis to high among low income participants in the study area.

Abstract

Metacognitive awareness is the ability to reflect upon one's own thinking, experience, and environment. Self-awareness, or the ability to recognize oneself as an individuated self and introspect upon one's own feelings, ideas, and behavior, is a master dimension of consciousness. The argument in this research addresses theories of consciousness, brain origins, and the emergence of self-awareness as it seeks to grasp identity, cognition, and the subjective quality of experience. The relationship between higher-level cognitive processes such as memory, perception, and decision-making and consciousness is also studied to build an impression of how the human brain works.
