Abstract

Flashcards have long been recognized as a valuable tool in English Language Teaching (ELT), particularly for helping students build and retain vocabulary. With the rise of technology, traditional paper-based flashcards have evolved into digital formats, making them more versatile and widely accessible in language learning. This study aims to analyze trends in flashcard research and explore their impact on vocabulary acquisition, student engagement, and technological integration. This systematic review explores the effectiveness of flashcards in ELT, focusing on primary school students by analyzing studies published between 2020 and 2024. Following the PRISMA framework, relevant studies were selected from databases such as Google Scholar, Mendeley, and Semantic Scholar, ensuring a rigorous screening process based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. The findings reveal that flashcards improve vocabulary retention, increase student engagement, and foster motivation. Digital flashcards, in particular, offer interactive features, multimedia support, and ease of access, creating a more engaging and adaptable learning experience. However, challenges such as unequal access to technology and the risk of over-reliance on digital tools must be considered. This review emphasizes the importance of integrating flashcards with other teaching strategies to maximize their impact in ELT classrooms.

Abstract

Politeness is a crucial element in human communication, used to maintain interpersonal relationships and prevent conflicts. In sociolinguistics, politeness is studied as a linguistic strategy involving efforts to mitigate threats to the interlocutor's self-image, known as the concept of "face." This article explores politeness strategies as described by Ronald Wardhaugh in An Introduction to Sociolinguistics. Reviewing four main strategies—bald-on- record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record—the article also discusses the significance of politeness in cultural contexts and its implications for cross-cultural communication research and practice. A deep understanding of politeness not only provides theoretical insights but also enhances communication effectiveness in various multicultural settings.

The effectiveness of special education programmes in primary schools, with a focus on the impact on the academic and social-emotional development of students with special needs. This study used a literature review method. The results showed that special education programs using inclusive approaches and personalised teaching contributed significantly to improved academic performance and student engagement. Effective collaboration between teachers, special education staff, parents and other professionals was also identified as an important factor in the success of the programmes. Nonetheless, the study highlighted implementation challenges, such as limited resources and the need for continuous professional development for educators. The conclusion of this analysis emphasises the need for increased investment and support in special education to overcome these challenges and ensure the achievement of optimal learning outcomes for all students.

Abstract

This article discusses the concepts of style and register in the realm of sociolinguistics, which is a branch of linguistics that studies the relationship between language and society. Style refers to variations in language use based on situational context, level of formality, and social relationships between speakers, as discussed by Labov (1972) in his research on sociolinguistic patterns. Meanwhile, register refers to language variations that are influenced by certain fields of activity or professions, as described by Halliday (1978) in his theory of systemic functional linguistics. This article also explores factors that influence the choice of style and register, such as age, gender, social status, and communication goals, based on research contributions from Trudgill (1983) and Fishman (1968). By understanding style and register, deep insight can be gained into how language is used to reflect identity, build social relationships, and adapt communication in various contexts. This study not only strengthens previous sociolinguistic theories but also provides practical insights to support social interaction, language teaching, and the development of cross-cultural communication.

Abstract

The use of technology in the education of children with special needs offers great potential to improve learning quality and accessibility. Recent literature reviews have shown that technologies such as assistive devices, educational apps and online learning platforms can provide more individualised and effective solutions in supporting the academic, social and emotional development of children with special needs. However, the implementation of these technologies is not free from challenges, including cost, the need for adequate training for educators, and issues of privacy and data security. Therefore, strong collaboration between the government, educational institutions and the technology sector is needed to overcome these barriers and maximise the potential of technology in inclusive education. The study concludes that with the right approach, technology can be an important tool to meet the unique needs of children with special needs and help them reach their full potential.

Abstract

A comparison between classical and modern Islamic philosophy can be seen through the works and thoughts of two great intellectuals: Al-Kindi and Seyyed Hossein Nasr. Al-Kindi, as an icon of classical Islamic philosophy, is famous for his efforts to incorporate Greek philosophical thought into Islamic teachings, showing openness to knowledge from diverse civilisations. On the other hand, Seyyed Hossein Nasr, a contemporary thinker, rejected the influence of modern secularism and materialism, emphasising the importance of maintaining the integrity of Islam's spiritual tradition. Although their approaches differ, both share a dedication to the propagation and maintenance of Islamic intellectual and spiritual values. This analysis illustrates how Islamic philosophy evolves in the face of the challenges of each age, remaining relevant and providing a rich perspective in understanding and dealing with the dynamics of the modern world.

Abstract

The application of the insanity defence in murder cases in Indonesia highlights the challenges and implications arising from the application of this law. This study examines the consistency and effectiveness of the insanity defence in Indonesia and its impact on the criminal justice system and mental health. The review shows that although Indonesian law recognises the insanity defence, its implementation is often inconsistent and not supported by an adequate mental health assessment system. This results in unfairness in the handling of murder cases involving suspects with mental illness, as well as the continued stigmatisation of people with such disorders. The implications of these findings are significant for improving the justice and mental health systems in Indonesia. Better integration between the legal system and mental health services is needed to ensure the application of the insanity defence is fair and human rights compliant. This study recommends improved training for law enforcement, as well as strengthened coordination with mental health professionals to support effective rehabilitation for individuals with mental illness. This is expected to improve the fairness and protection of individual rights in the application of the insanity defence in Indonesia.

Abstract

BEPS consists of a series of measures created to close loopholes in international tax regulations that allow companies to channel their profits to jurisdictions with low or zero tax rates. The study conducted in this research uses the literature study method. The results show that the BEPS policy has successfully improved transparency and accountability in multinational companies' tax reporting. It strengthens transfer pricing rules, introduces country-by-country (CbC) reporting, and implements a multilateral framework to facilitate cooperation between countries in addressing tax issues. Nonetheless, implementation challenges remain, such as the need for companies to adjust their business structure and operations, as well as the importance of consistent coordination between jurisdictions in implementing this policy.

Abstract

Management Accountability and School Operational Assistance (BOS) at SMP Negeri 1 Pallangga in Gowa Regency. Master of Public Administration Study Program, Unismuh Makassar Postgraduate Program. Supervised by Muhlis Madani and Hj. Fatmawati. This study aims to analyze the accountability of the management of school operational assistance funds (BOS) at SMP Negeri 1 Pallangga; and to understand the obstacles found in the management of school operational assistance funds (BOS) at SMP Negeri 1 Pallangga. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study research type combined with triangulation techniques. The data collection techniques in this research are interview, observation and documentation. The results of this study indicate that the accountability of BOS fund management at SMP Negeri 1 Pallangga has been analyzed using 3 indicators of management measurement, namely: a) The preparation process is through a meeting (all teachers and stakeholders, where the meeting is held once a year. In the meeting, it will be discussed and agreed upon and then compiled in the RKAS (School Budget Activity Plan). BOS funds are calculated based on the number of students, where in 1 year there will be 1 change, namely the distribution mechanism of 3 disbursements of funds in 1 year. b) The purchase of school facilities and infrastructure can be accessed through the SIPlah application, after selecting the items that are prioritized then going to SulSelBar bank to collect the budget and transferring it to the treasurer to use the budget. c) Evaluation and supervision are carried out periodically and continuously, both internally and externally. Meanwhile, the obstacles to the management of BOS funds at SMP Negeri 1 Pallangga were the use of the SIP application, which was still in the adjustment process because it was a new policy program. Sometimes there were still treasurers of each junior high school who were not proficient in using the application and needed to be guided properly. This SIPlah application also has its own obstacles in running the application, namely constrained by a poor internet network, which will interfere with the transaction process. Then, if there is a delay in the disbursement of BOS funds, the SIPlah application cannot be used directly.
