Abstract

This study explores the reception of students (santri) toward the tradition of reciting Surah al-Quraysh at Pondok Pesantren Sulaimaniyah Bandung, within the framework of Living Qur’an studies. The ritual recitation of short surahs in Islamic boarding schools reflects the actualization of the sacred text in everyday life. Surah al-Quraysh, which emphasizes divine protection, blessings, and spiritual stability, serves as a focal point for understanding how the Qur’an is interpreted within the pesantren community. Using a qualitative approach and Hans Robert Jauss’s reception theory, this research investigates the horizon of expectation that shapes how the students interpret the meaning of Surah al-Quraysh—both ritually and spiritually. Data was collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that students’ reception of the surah evolves from mere routine practice to a profound spiritual experience that fosters collective identity and religious depth. This tradition is influenced by students’ cultural backgrounds, the authoritative role of teachers, and the communal atmosphere of the pesantren, positioning Surah al-Quraysh as a living and dynamic text. This research contributes to the expansion of Living Qur’an studies and the understanding of religious practices in the context of modern Islamic education.

Abstract

This research explores the reception of the Qur'an in the digital era through a TikTok platform called My Inspiration using a descriptive qualitative method. The analysis focuses on several videos or content related to three recommended practices for having children, the meaning of Surah At-Talaq verses 2–3 commonly referred to as the "Ayat of a Thousand Dinars"as well as the interpretation and recitation of Surah Ad-Dhuha, and understanding the tests given by Allah. This study highlights contemporary methods of da'wah through social media and also emphasizes life dynamics, including how to attain a good life and remain patient when tested by Allah in various ways. The findings reveal that the video content offers an aesthetic and exegetical approach, presenting religious concepts with visually engaging elements, simple and easily understood language, and depictions grounded in everyday life. This research complements the limitations of previous studies and demonstrates the adaptation of Qur'anic messages within the context of modern life and public response in the digital era.

Abstract

This study examines the persistent practice of the Ma'pakande Tomate (or manta'da) ritual among the Christian community in Tana Toraja, despite their adherence to Christian teachings. This ritual, performed to honor long-deceased ancestors, is rooted in the belief that the spirits of ancestors who have "membali puang" (become deities) can influence and bestow blessings upon the living, encompassing health, sustenance, and protection from misfortune. This conviction directly contrasts with Christian doctrine, which posits a severed connection between the living and the dead, and asserts that true blessings originate solely from God (Jeremiah 17:7). Utilizing a qualitative research method, this study was conducted in several areas of Tana Toraja where the Ma'pakande Tomate ritual is still actively practiced. The core focus of this investigation is a theological review of this practice, exploring how Torajan Christians interpret this ritual as both a cultural preservation and a source of material blessings, such as health and economic prosperity. The findings are expected to offer deeper insights into the syncretism of beliefs in Tana Toraja and serve as a foundation for Christian religious leaders to provide guidance and clarify the correct understanding of the source of blessings according to Christian teachings.

Abstract

Malay Arabic script is one of the written cultural heritages that has played an important role in the history of Malay civilisation, particularly in Southeast Asia. This script developed as a result of interaction between local cultures and Islamic influences that entered the archipelago through trade, missionary work, and education. Throughout its history, the Malay Arabic script has not only served as a means of communication but also as the primary medium for the dissemination of Islamic teachings and the formation of the cultural identity of the Malay people. This study aims to explore in depth the origins, development, role, challenges, and efforts to preserve the Malay Arabic script in the modern era. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach by examining various scientific literature, journals, and relevant historical documents. The results of the study show that Arabic Malay script has undergone significant development in various aspects of life, ranging from education and literature to royal administration. In addition, this script also played a major role in shaping the cultural and Islamic identity of the Malay community. However, with the development of technology and the dominance of the Latin script, the existence of Arabic Malay script began to be marginalised. Therefore, strategic and sustainable efforts are needed from various parties, such as educational institutions, the government, and cultural communities, to preserve and maintain the existence of this script so that it does not disappear from the nation's cultural heritage.

Abstract

This study explores the summary interpretation published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenag RI) alongside the Qur'anic concept of leadership. Employing a thematic approach, the research gathers Qur'anic verses relevant to the theme of leadership. The findings reveal that the Ministry's summary interpretation offers a broad and structured understanding of diverse Islamic themes, including leadership, through a thematic framework. Leadership in the Qur'an is articulated through three primary roles: Caliph, Imam, and Ulil Amri, each carrying distinct functions and obligations. The principles of leadership outlined in the Qur'an serve as foundational guidance for leaders, encouraging them to fulfill their responsibilities in accordance with Islamic values and teachings

Abstract

This article discusses the meaning of fasād (corruption or damage) in Q.S. ar-Rūm: 41, along with Wahbah az-Zuhaili’s interpretation in Tafsir al-Munīr regarding the relationship between moral decadence and environmental degradation. The verse indicates that the corruption occurring on land and at sea is a direct consequence of human actions, especially acts of immorality, injustice, and violations of moral values. Wahbah az-Zuhaili explains that fasād encompasses not only physical damage—such as drought, floods, and natural disasters—but also social decay resulting from human wrongdoing. This approach aligns with the Islamic environmental ethics perspective, which sees environmental destruction as stemming from humanity's failure to fulfill its role as stewards (khalīfah) of the earth. The article emphasizes the importance of integrating moral and spiritual dimensions in efforts to protect the environment, as well as the need for collective awareness to return to Islamic teachings that stress balance and responsibility toward nature. Thus, moral decadence significantly contributes to the ongoing ecological crisis, and its restoration requires ethical reform and a renewed commitment to divine values.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find and analyze the types of harmful relationships from the perspective of the Qur'an. This study uses the Grounded Theory method as a thematic study approach. The types of harmful relationships are types of relationships that are emotionally, spiritually, and socially destructive, which are increasing in modern life, including among Muslims. This study investigates the verses of the Qur'an related to human relationships and the principles of relational morality and finds five main categories of harmful relationships found in the Qur'an: injustice (ẓulm), hypocrisy (nifaq) and emotional manipulation; verbal violence and humiliation of dignity; obstruction of goodness and spirituality (saddu'an sabilillah) and the spread of evil. This study shows that the Qur'an explicitly rejects types of relationships that are not based on rahmah, mawaddah, and taqwa. The results encourage the incorporation of Qur'anic values into relationship education, marriage counseling, and efforts to prevent emotional violence in the family.

Abstract

Poverty is a social issue that receives significant attention in Islamic teachings, particularly in the Qur'an. Islam not only acknowledges poverty as a societal reality but also offers normative solutions to address it through both spiritual and structural approaches. This study explores the Qur'anic perspective on poverty and its proposed strategies for empowering the community's economy. Employing a qualitative method through library research, the study thematically analyzes verses that discuss poverty and economic tools such as zakat, infaq, alms, and the prohibition of usury. The findings indicate that the Qur'an considers poverty a condition that must be eliminated using equitable social and economic instruments, while also highlighting the communal obligation to achieve collective welfare. From the Qur'anic viewpoint, economic empowerment encompasses not just material aspects but also spiritual ones, emphasizing a strong work ethic, fair distribution of wealth, and social solidarity.

Abstract

This article explores the normative input of the Qur’an in the emerging values of gender equality and human rights in the light of three-proposed main principles: justice (ʿadl), dignity (karāmah), and individual rights (ḥuqūq al-fard). This research emerged following the desire to deconstruct religious knowledge that has been mostly encoded with patriarchal interpretation and local culture that restricts roles and freedoms women. This article applies a qualitative approach in the form of literature study and thematic interpretation analysis (mawḍū‘ī), and aspires to bring some focus to the contribution of our contemporary scholars in order to develop Islamic discourse that is gender-just and human rights-focused. The results of the research reveal that, far from merely tolerating the concepts of equality and toleration, the Qur'an constitutes a robust normative model for the realization of human rights in an emancipatory, inclusive and transcendent way. An exploratory article to draw attention to the necessity for a critical and contextual reading of to counter misinterpretations that minimize the rights of women and other suchlike categories.
