Abstract

This study aims to analytically examine the intellectual contributions of Muhammad Abduh and M. Rasyid Ridha to the tradition of modern exegesis through their monumental work, Tafsir al-Manar. This study uses a qualitative approach with a library research method, namely by examining various primary and secondary sources, both in the form of tafsir books, scientific works, and relevant contemporary research results. The results of the study show that Tafsir al-Manar was born out of a social, political, and intellectual context that demanded the renewal of Islamic thought in the modern era. The contributions of Abduh and Ridha are evident in their efforts to integrate rationality, morality, and social relevance in the interpretation of the Qur'an, thus giving birth to a paradigm of interpretation that is responsive to the changing times. Furthermore, the influence of Tafsir al-Manar has proven to be so widespread that it has inspired the emergence of modern interpretations such as Tafsir al-Maraghi and Tafsir al-Azhar, as well as providing a methodological basis for the development of contextual interpretation today. Thus, this study confirms that Tafsir al-Manar not only serves as a monumental work of interpretation, but also as an important milestone in the evolution of the modern tradition of interpretation that emphasises a balance between text, reason, and social reality.

Abstract

This study highlights the urgent need to comprehensively understand the function of the Holy Spirit, which is triggered by theological confusion that still prevails among believers. The main objective of this study is to comprehensively examine and compile various aspects of the role of the Holy Spirit as described in the New Testament, in order to provide an integrated and applicable framework in Christian life. Using a qualitative approach through a literature review (pneumatology), this study primarily examines the New Testament as the primary source, accompanied by secondary references such as theology books and journals. The findings of this study reinforce the main thesis, concluding that the Holy Spirit is a Divine Person whose activities changed from being selective and temporary in the Old Testament to being universal and eternal in the New Testament. Further research shows that the Holy Spirit's functions can be organized into two essential roles, namely as the Sanctifier (internal character formation) and the Paraclete (Helper, Comforter, and External Empowerer). Overall, this study emphasizes that an integrated understanding of the Holy Spirit's role provides a solid theological foundation and practical model for spiritual development, encouraging a more conscious dependence on the Holy Spirit in achieving holiness and mission service.

Abstract

This research examines the cultural acculturation between Minangkabau and Mandailing in marriage processes in Nagari Ujung Gading, West Pasaman during the period of 1983-2000. Nagari Ujung Gading is a border area inhabited by two major ethnic groups, Minangkabau and Mandailing, each with different cultural characteristics. The focus of the research is on the acculturation process, the dominance of Minangkabau culture, and the position of Mandailing culture in the context of marriage. The research uses a qualitative approach with heuristic historical research methods. Primary data was obtained through interviews with traditional leaders and local communities, as well as written documents such as traditional tambo books. The results show that the acculturation process occurred through long-term social interactions that began with the migration of Mandailing people to the Pasaman region. Minangkabau culture dominates the wedding procession due to geographical, social, and cultural factors. Nevertheless, Mandailing culture maintains a significant position in several elements of marriage, especially in the tradition of dowry money (uang hantaran) and mangupa-upa ritual. This acculturation not only gave birth to unique marriage practices but also created a hybrid cultural identity reflected in language and traditional rituals.

Abstract

Huma Betang is a cultural symbol of the Dayak Ngaju people in Central Kalimantan, representing not only a physical dwelling but also a worldview grounded in togetherness, tolerance, justice, deliberation, and simplicity. Within contextual theology, Huma Betang serves as a countercultural model that challenges the growing tide of globalization and modernity marked by individualism, materialism, and competition. This study aims to explore the relevance of Huma Betang’s values for church life in Central Kalimantan, particularly in the practice of contextual theology. Using a descriptive-qualitative method through theological and cultural literature analysis, the study reveals that Huma Betang’s values align with Gospel principles and can serve as the foundation for a contextual and transformative church community. A church rooted in Huma Betang’s ethos becomes an alternative community that resists dominant culture while embodying love, social justice, and ecological spirituality.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the understanding of Christological doctrine regarding the unity of Christ's divinity and humanity in the event of His birth, examine the relationship between incarnation and salvation, and understand its practical implications as a model of faith, hope, and service. This research uses a qualitative approach by reviewing literature from five book sources and five online journals. The results show that Christological doctrine explains the unity of divinity and humanity through the concept of incarnation established by the church councils. The birth of Christ through the Virgin Mary proves His humanity, while conception through the Holy Spirit demonstrates His divinity. Incarnation has an integral relationship with salvation; without it, the work of redemption cannot be accomplished because a perfect Mediator with both divine and human nature is required. Furthermore, the birth of Jesus provides an example of humility that serves as the foundation for the faith, hope, and service of Christians today. This research concludes that the event of Christ's birth is not merely historical but a fundamental theological foundation for the Christian faith, with relevant implications for the life and ministry of believers.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of fasting as a medium of tazkiyatun nafs (purification of the soul) from the perspective of KH. Sholeh Darat through Tafsir Faidh al-Rahman. KH. Sholeh Darat, a 19th-century scholar of the archipelago, interpreted fasting through a Sufi approach that emphasized the spiritual and inner dimensions. In Al-Baqarah verse 183, he divides fasting into three levels: physical fasting (shari'ah), fasting of the limbs (thariqah), and fasting of the heart (haqiqah), in line with Al-Ghazali's thought. Fasting is not only aimed at individual piety but also has a social impact, such as increasing self-awareness, brotherhood, and community order. This study demonstrates that a holistic understanding of fasting, combining aspects of fiqh and Sufism, is relevant for overcoming the limited knowledge of those who focus solely on legal aspects. Fasting is regarded as an effective means of spiritual transformation, purifying the soul and leading to a more meaningful life.

Abstract

In the hadith Ahmad explained three important things that were ordered by the Prophet, namely, respecting people who are older than us, loving people who are younger than us, respecting and respecting people who are pious (teachers). In the Hadith of Ibn Majah it is explained that the key to success is Faith, faith is the foundation in doing righteous deeds because Allah will only accept the righteous deeds of those who believe in Him. While in another hadith of Ibn Majah no. 23 explained that in seeking knowledge, one must have a sincere intention to gain knowledge that is useful for oneself and for others and accompanied by morals and manners, because knowledge that is accompanied by morals will make the knowledge gained useful and of course also useful. . In the Hadith Tirmidhi no. 2417 explains to us not to stop studying, even to the end of our lives, besides that it also tells us that everything we do in this world, no matter how small, will be accounted for in the hereafter.

Abstract

The educational material in Q.S. Luqman verses 12–19 and Q.S. Al-Isra verses 23–25 discusses the principles of Islamic education, which include the formation of monotheistic beliefs, the implementation of Sharia law, and the instilling of noble character from an early age through Luqman's direct advice to his son and the affirmation of the obligation to be devoted to one's parents. In these verses, education focuses on instilling faith in Allah, prohibiting polytheism, the importance of gratitude, teaching righteous deeds, strengthening noble character, and upholding social values such as respect, politeness, and empathy towards parents even in less than ideal circumstances. These two sets of verses also emphasise the urgency of moral and spiritual education and methods of character building through wise dialogue, loving warnings, and the involvement of role models in the family. The application of this integrated educational concept is believed to be able to address humanitarian issues and the challenges of modernisation.

Abstract

This study discusses Al-Ghazali's Sufi teachings with a focus on the concept of purification of the soul (tazkiyatun nafs), ethical dimensions, and spirituality contained in his monumental works such as Ihya' Ulumiddin. This literature review discusses Al-Ghazali's thoughts on integrating sharia, hakikat, and makrifat as a process of self-transformation towards spiritual perfection. Al-Ghazali's Sufi teachings are not only a moral and spiritual foundation in classical Islamic tradition, but are also relevant to be applied in the context of modern spiritual challenges, including moral and spiritual crises in the contemporary era. This study uses a descriptive analytical method with primary sources from Al-Ghazali's works and secondary sources in the form of literature studies related to Sufism and spiritual ethics.

Abstract

This study examines euthanasia from the ethical point of view of Christian theology, with a primary focus on the relationship between love and suffering. Through a theological-ethical qualitative approach and a literature study method, this study analyzes Christian theological views on life, human dignity, and terminal suffering in moral and spiritual contexts. The results of the study show that in Christian theology, life is understood as a divine gift from God that cannot be terminated by humans, because only God has sovereignty over life and death. True love (agape) is interpreted as empathetic companionship through palliative care and pastoral service, not as an act to end suffering. Suffering in the context of the Christian faith is seen as having spiritual value that can deepen man's faith and relationship with God. Thus, euthanasia, whether active or passive, cannot be ethically-theologically justified. The Church and Christian institutions are expected to strengthen the ministry of love, spiritual consolation, and the development of ethical and pastoral education that affirms the sacred value of life and respect for human dignity in the midst of terminal suffering
