Abstract

This study investigated the role of indigenous social control in preventing drug misuse among youth in Pampang Village, an urban indigenous community of the Dayak Kenyah in Samarinda, Indonesia. The research was motivated by increasing concerns over the digital era’s influence, particularly social media on youth behavior and moral disengagement. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were gathered through interviews with the village head and local officers from the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), as well as field observations within the community. The findings revealed that, despite the exposure of youth to online risks, the Pampang community has sustained a strong internal system of social regulation rooted in customary practices. Regular community gatherings in the Lamin (traditional longhouse), especially during year-end cultural rituals, provide a platform for elders to convey collective advice and reinforce social norms. Additionally, close coordination between traditional leaders and state actors namely the Bintara Pembina Desa (village-based military officer) and Bhayangkara Pembina Keamanan dan Ketertiban Masyarakat (community police officer) enhances early prevention of social deviance. These mechanisms, based on communal shame, moral reinforcement, and solidarity, have effectively safeguarded youth from involvement in drug-related issues. The study concludes that indigenous social control, when aligned with formal institutional support, can serve as a resilient cultural framework for preventing youth delinquency in the digital age.

Abstract

The dynamic realm of digital communication is increasingly offering us the opportunity to transcend the barriers of tradition and create more inclusive, participatory learning environments. Virtual Reality (VR) is emerging as a powerful medium for this purpose. It holds immense potential for bridging learning gaps, particularly for communities that have been marginalized or otherwise excluded on the basis of geographical, social, or physical barriers. The immersive and interactive qualities of VR are instrumental in this transformative process. This paper explores the application of VR in fostering a more inclusive digital learning space. We specifically delve into how VR can enhance engagement, foster experiential understanding, and promote equal access to resources in educational settings. Drawing upon theoretical foundations from social constructivism and the principles of digital inclusion, we propose a hybrid framework. This framework leverages the potential of VR and digital communication strategies to create a more inclusive learning ecosystem. The paper discusses key dimensions including accessibility, immersion, interaction, and community-building. It also contemplates the broader implications of VR-powered learning in relation to overarching societal goals such as social equity and participatory inclusion. This paper, at its core, seeks to contextualize VR within the broader narrative of inclusive digital transformation, providing educators, policymakers, and technologists with valuable insights for building a fairer, more equitable digital learning future

Abstract

Digital disruption has fundamentally changed social interactions, creating challenges and opportunities for social cohesion in communities. This research examines the complex interactions between technology and society, emphasizing that successful communities are those that are able to balance the use of technology for connectivity with authentic face to face interactions. Using normative legal research methods and a case study approach, this research analyzes legal literature such as Law Number 11 of 2008 on Electronic Information and Transactions, as well as other relevant regulations. The results show the importance of digital literacy and social media ethics programs to equip individuals with the ability to think critically and interact responsibly in online spaces. Communities also need to consciously integrate online and offline interactions to ensure technology is a complement, not a substitute, for meaningful personal relationships, in order to create resilient, inclusive and adaptive communities in the future.

Abstract

This study examines the organizational communication climate in the online media Kaltim Today, which contributes to the production of quality journalism. Communication patterns involve direct information delivery from management to employees, particularly journalists, particularly in situations requiring a rapid response. Horizontal communication also exists between employees to coordinate tasks, particularly in the editorial department. Therefore, the communication climate is measured through five values: support, participatory decision-making, trust, openness and sincerity, and high-performance goals. Findings indicate that despite leadership support, openness between employees and management remains a concern. Decision-making tends to be centered on management, and the company faces challenges in establishing a clear vision, mission, and standard operating procedures. Recommendations for improving the organizational communication climate include increasing subordinate involvement in decision-making, addressing transparency issues, designing a vision and mission statement involving employees, and improving structured communication management. These steps are expected to strengthen the communication climate, improve the quality of journalistic products, and support the achievement of company goals. The research method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach, where data is collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. Informants include the editor-in-chief, journalists with young competency status, and employees from various fields at Kaltim Today.

Abstract

In the era of rapid digital transformation, digital inclusivity has become a crucial pillar of national development, ensuring equitable access to technology for all members of society. However, the widespread phenomenon of online gambling in Indonesia poses a serious challenge to achieving this goal. This study aims to juridically analyze online gambling practices as a structural barrier to realizing inclusive digital transformation. Using a normative legal research method with conceptual and statutory approaches, this study examines the weaknesses in the existing legal framework, particularly in the implementation of the ITE Law and the Criminal Code. It also evaluates law enforcement challenges in the context of transnational and anonymous cybercrimes. The analysis shows that overlapping regulations, limited international cooperation, insufficient monitoring technology, and low public digital literacy are the main obstacles in combating online gambling. Furthermore, the predominantly repressive legal approach is deemed inadequate to meet the need for a safe and inclusive digital transformation. Therefore, adaptive and collaborative regulatory reform is necessary, including strengthening digital literacy, establishing a protection system for vulnerable groups, and enhancing inter-agency and international cooperation. This study recommends a more holistic digital legal policy reform as a foundation for creating a digital ecosystem that is fair and free from the threat of online gambling.

Abstract

This research discusses the practice of using fact-checking tools by the Samarinda City residents in the context of digital literacy. The main purpose of the study is to understand the pattern of use, level of understanding, and attitude of the community towards fact-checking tools, as well as evaluating the extent to which the tool can help overcome hoaxes on social media. This study is academically important because it fills the literature gap on information verification behavior at the city level, as well as practically provides a basis for digital literacy strategies and community education campaigns. This research uses a qualitative approach to gain a deep understanding of the experience, perception, and challenges of residents. Data was collected through the Google Form online questionnaire filled by 114 active respondents of internet users in Samarinda City. The analysis was carried out descriptively and thematically to group answers based on the main themes that emerged. The findings show that the majority of Samarinda City residents rely on social media as a source of information, with a high frequency of hoax exposure. Although some realize the importance of verification of information, knowledge, and use of fact-checking tools is still low, with Cekfakta.com into the most well-known platforms. This study concluded that digital literacy plays a crucial role in increasing community resilience to misinformation, and individual awareness is the main key in combating hoaxes. The practical implications of this study include the need to increase education and socialization about fact-checking tools, as well as the development of digital literacy strategies that are appropriate to the local context to support more active and critical community participation in information verification.

Abstract

The advancement of digital technology has transformed prostitution practices into online forms that are difficult to monitor and regulate legally. This article analyzes the existing positive legal framework in Indonesia concerning online prostitution and identifies the challenges in law enforcement in the digital era. The research employs a normative juridical approach with legislative and conceptual analyses. Findings indicate that current regulations such as the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (UU ITE), the Criminal Code (KUHP), the Pornography Law, and the Human Trafficking Law (UU TPPO) are not sufficiently effective in addressing online prostitution due to technical, juridical, institutional, and social obstacles. Law enforcement remains hindered by limited investigative capacity in digital forensics, inconsistent application of laws, and inadequate inter-agency coordination. This article proposes juridical solutions including regulatory reform that criminalizes the use of prostitution services, adoption of the Nordic legal model, enhancement of digital forensic technology, and improvement in law enforcement capacity and coordination. Educational approaches and restorative justice are also recommended to strengthen prevention efforts and protect sex workers. The study concludes that effective law enforcement against online prostitution requires a synergy of legal reform, technological advancement, and comprehensive social strategies.

Abstract

AI chatbots have emerged as a new medium of dynamic interaction among Generation Z, offering a sense of presence, intimacy, security, comfort, and rapid responses in meeting users’ needs, and are frequently utilized for emotional regulation. However, users are often unaware of their underlying needs and motives for engaging with AI chatbot media. This study aims to examine the selection of chatbot media through the lens of the Uses and Gratifications Theory, focusing on individual needs, motivation, interaction, and satisfaction in regulating emotions. The framework is further supported by Interpersonal Emotion Regulation (IER), encompassing indicators such as Interpersonal Acceptance, Interpersonal Reappraisal, Interpersonal Advice, Interpersonal Distraction, Interpersonal Suppression, and Interpersonal Ignorance, which assess emotional regulation in relation to acknowledging and releasing emotions, problem-solving, and seeking advice. A quantitative approach employing a survey method was adopted, targeting Generation Z in Tulungagung, a region that records an annual increase of approximately 3,000 non-permanent residents. The study seeks to identify the relationship between chatbot usage patterns and emotional regulation.
