Abstract

Environmental awareness socialization through the identification of waste problems in rivers is an important approach in community-based environmental education. Sungai Ancar in Kekalik Jaya Village, Sekarbela District, Mataram City, is one of the urban rivers facing serious waste pollution problems due to residents' behavior of disposing of household waste directly into the river. This community service activity aimed to identify the types and distribution of waste, understand residents' behavior regarding waste disposal, and provide environmental awareness education to housewives living along the riverbank. The activity was conducted in June 2026 using a qualitative descriptive approach through participatory observation and unstructured interviews carried out simultaneously at the river site. Field observations identified three main categories of waste: inorganic waste (plastic bags, bottles, and styrofoam), organic waste (leaves, bamboo twigs, and food scraps), and household hazardous waste (used sanitary pads and diapers). Waste was found floating on the water surface, accumulated along the riverbank, and clogging the bridge structure. The urgency of this issue was reinforced by the major flood on July 6, 2025, which impacted 30,681 residents of Kekalik Jaya. Post-activity evaluation indicated a shift in residents' perception, particularly in recognizing the link between waste disposal habits and flood risk. This activity demonstrates that participatory in-situ socialization is effective in building environmental awareness; however, it must be supported by systemic policy improvements in waste management infrastructure.

Abstract

This community service activity evaluates the coastal environmental cleanliness and analyzes the specific types of waste accumulated at Loang Baloq Beach, Mataram, while addressing the behavioral gap in waste management through environmental education. Applying a descriptive qualitative method combined with basic quantitative percentages, data were collected through physical inspection using structured observation sheets across five observation points and semi-structured interviews with 4 selected stakeholders, including visitors, vendors, sanitation workers, and local residents. The findings reveal that coastal cleanliness is sub-optimal, heavily dominated by inorganic litter, specifically plastic waste, accounting for 55%, followed by organic waste at 25%, glass and metal at 10%, and other types at 10%. Although 91.4% of visitors possess high environmental knowledge, a significant behavioral gap exists, driven by a lack of proactive waste disposal, social modeling of littering, limited trash bin facilities on the shoreline, and continuous waste runoff from Kali Bernyok. To address this issue, an educational program and interactive discussions on environmental care were conducted. In conclusion, resolving waste issues at Loang Baloq Beach requires an integrated sustainable framework, combining public education with structural interventions, including the expansion of sorted waste bins, implementation of the 3R paradigm (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), and community-based waste banks.

Abstract

The increasing intensity of trading activities in urban areas contributes to higher waste generation and environmental problems in traditional markets. This community service program aimed to improve community knowledge, awareness, and participation in waste management at Karang Jasi Traditional Market, Cakranegara District, Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara. The program was conducted in May 2026 and involved 30 participants, consisting of market traders, cleaning staff, and market managers. The methods included field observation, interviews, environmental education, waste-sorting demonstrations, and participatory discussions. The results showed that waste management in the market still faces several challenges, including limited waste disposal facilities, inadequate waste segregation practices, and inconsistent waste collection schedules. The waste generated was predominantly organic waste, such as vegetable residues, fruit waste, and food scraps, which have the potential to be utilized through composting activities. Following the educational and assistance activities, participants demonstrated improved understanding of the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and showed positive responses toward environmental improvement efforts. The program indicates that educational and participatory approaches can effectively enhance community awareness and support sustainable waste management practices in traditional market environments.

Abstract

The coastal area of Karang Panas Beach Ampenan faces the threat of environmental degradation due to low public awareness and high accumulation of plastic waste. This service activity aims to increase the cognitive knowledge and ecological awareness of the community related to independent waste management and coastal sustainability. The program was implemented using a participatory approach involving 45 residents (fishermen, traders, and local youth). The implementation methods include interactive environmental education, beach cleanup actions, and the procurement of hygiene facilities, which are evaluated using pre-test and post-test questionnaire instruments. The results of the activity showed a drastic increase in participants' understanding from an average score of 45.2% to 85.6%. In addition, participatory action managed to collect 125.6 kg of waste dominated by single-use plastics (62.5%), triggering a real commitment of residents to change waste disposal behavior. In conclusion, participatory-based environmental education is very effective in shaping environmentally conscious behavior in coastal communities. The sustainability of a clean coastal ecosystem requires continuous education programs, the provision of adequate waste management infrastructure, and strong synergy between communities and local governments.

Abstract

Household waste management remains a major environmental challenge in urban areas due to rising waste generation and limited implementation of household-level waste segregation. This community service activity aimed to improve community knowledge and awareness regarding household waste segregation among residents of Gomong Village, Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara. The program was conducted on June 10, 2026, using a participatory approach involving 13 community members and local micro-enterprises. Data were collected through observations, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation, followed by educational sessions and the distribution of posters promoting waste segregation and the Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3R) principles. The findings revealed that 76.9% of participants disposed of household waste directly without prior collection, and 76.9% did not separate organic and inorganic waste. Although 69.2% had previously received information about waste management, proper segregation practices were still rarely implemented. The educational activities enhanced participants’ understanding of waste categories, the importance of segregation, and the environmental impacts of improper waste disposal. Overall, the program contributed to increased awareness and encouraged more responsible household waste management behavior. Continuous environmental education and community engagement are recommended to strengthen sustainable waste segregation practices and support cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable urban communities.

Abstract

Coastal areas like Kota Tua Ampenan Beach in Mataram hold significant historical, cultural, and tourism value, yet rising visitor and community activity has increased waste generation, threatening coastal sustainability. This activity aimed to identify the types and distribution of waste in the area and to raise community environmental awareness through education. A descriptive method with a participatory approach was used, involving direct observation, interviews, documentation, and environmental education for residents, vendors, and visitors. The observation results showed a total of 510 waste items, dominated by plastic waste (250 items, 49.0%), followed by wood branches and dried leaves (180 items, 35.3%), cans (50 items, 9.8%), and vegetable residues (30 items, 5.9%). The environmental education activities improved participants' understanding of the impact of waste on the coastal ecosystem and encouraged more environmentally responsible behavior, although littering was still observed. It can be concluded that plastic waste is the main pollutant at Kota Tua Ampenan Beach, while environmental education effectively increased community awareness and participation in coastal conservation. These findings imply the need for sustainable community-based waste management, including adequate facilities and ongoing education, to support the area's conservation.

Abstract

Household organic waste remains a significant environmental challenge in rural areas due to limited community participation in sustainable waste management practices. This community service program aimed to enhance community knowledge and awareness of household organic waste management by applying Biopore Infiltration Holes (BIHs) in Selengen Village, North Lombok Regency. The program integrated community education with hands-on BIH installation, providing a participatory approach that directly engaged residents in learning and practice. The activities involved 35 participants, predominantly housewives, followed by the installation of 13 biopore infiltration holes across five hamlets: Perigi, Tangga, Dompu Indah, Tampes, and Selengen. The implementation was characterized by active community participation during educational sessions, installation, and maintenance activities, indicating strong community acceptance of the program. The combination of educational outreach and practical field implementation represents the program's key strength, enabling participants to immediately apply the knowledge gained in managing household organic waste. The program helped improve community awareness and skills in environmentally friendly organic waste management while promoting the adoption of biopore technology as a simple, sustainable household waste management practice. These results demonstrate that a participatory community-based approach effectively strengthens local capacity for organic waste management and supports the long-term sustainability of environmental conservation initiatives at the village level. Abstract

Organic waste management remains an environmental challenge in urban areas, including Denpasar City, Bali. The community commonly manages household organic waste through the teba modern system, in which organic waste is allowed to decompose naturally. However, the process is generally carried out without the addition of bioactivators to support decomposition and optimize compost quality. This community service activity aimed to improve community knowledge and awareness of the use of rice washing water as a natural bioactivator for household organic composting. The activity was conducted in the Renon Field area, Denpasar, through material presentation, discussion, educational poster distribution, and seedling distribution. Participant evaluation was conducted using a questionnaire to obtain feedback on participants' knowledge and understanding of organic composting and natural bioactivators. The results showed that 68.8% of participants had previously known about and made organic fertilizer, indicating that basic awareness of organic waste utilization was relatively good. However, participants' knowledge of natural bioactivators, particularly the use of rice washing water, was still limited. Following the socialization, 37.5% of participants stated that the material was well understood and provided additional knowledge about organic composting. Participants also showed positive responses and interest in applying rice washing water as a natural bioactivator independently at home because it is readily available, inexpensive, and easy to apply. The activity also included the distribution of plant seedlings to encourage participants to apply the knowledge gained through the utilization of organic compost. These findings indicate that community socialization can contribute to improving public understanding and awareness of simple, economical, and environmentally friendly approaches to household organic waste management through the use of natural bioactivators.
