Abstract

This study examines the transformation of political rhetoric in the digital age, specifically analyzing how classical Aristotelian rhetorical elements (ethos, pathos, and logos) are adapted and manifested in social media political campaigns. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with content analysis methodology, this research analyzes political communication patterns on various social media platforms during the 2024 Indonesian regional elections. The findings reveal that digital political rhetoric demonstrates significant adaptations: ethos is constructed through algorithmic credibility and viral authenticity, pathos is amplified through emotional contagion mechanisms and micro-targeting, while logos is fragmented into bite-sized information packages optimized for platform-specific algorithms. The study concludes that digital political rhetoric creates new forms of persuasion that challenge traditional democratic discourse, requiring new frameworks for understanding political communication in the post-truth era.

Abstract

This study aimed to improve the speaking performance of eighth-grade students at SMPI Darudda’wah Punggur by applying the Talking Chip technique. Employing a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, the study was conducted in two cycles with 20 participating students. Data collection methods included observation, oral assessments, documentation, and audio recordings. Pre-survey findings revealed that only 20% of students met the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM) score of 74. Implementation of the Talking Chip strategy led to marked improvements in fluency, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and interactional strategies. By the conclusion of the second cycle, the mastery rate exceeded 85%. The findings confirm that the Talking Chip technique is effective in promoting active participation, increasing motivation, and ensuring equal speaking opportunities for all learners.

Abstract

AI has been the core of many studies from pure human studies to scientific experiments. The use of AI in translating medical documents has been going on for over a decade with solid results; however, the effectiveness of AI in interpreting in clinical settings is controversial due to several reasons including the language pairs tested, the expected accuracy, the dialect issues, and the satisfaction of both clinicians and patients. This study aims at studying the effectiveness and accuracy of three AI platforms interpreting between an English doctor and a Yemeni patient from Sana’a. The same dialogue was interpreted by a human person. The comparison shows that Arabic is a low resource language, let alone the Yemeni dialect. The intervention of a human interpreter is vital to maintain a high level of accuracy. Further studies should evaluate other Yemeni dialects and more complicated medical situations.

Abstract

English language acquisition is essential to be developed from a young age. However, most elementary school students learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) continue to experience numerous challenges. These are usually the result of instructional strategies that do not fully align with the requirements of 21st-century skills. Instruction is often teacher-centred, with not much peer interaction and hardly any utilization of technology to support meaningful learning experiences. This condition highlights the need to explore how interactive technologies can improve student engagement and make learning more meaningful and learner-centered. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the impact of student engagement in an English private classroom in Banda Aceh where the application of the interactive technology AhaSlides was integrated in the learning process. A case study design was employed, with six students aged between 10-11 years old. Observation sheets were used as data collection instrument to assess student engagement during the lessons taught by the teacher with and without the integration of technology, AhaSlides. The findings indicate an increase in student engagement after the teacher integrated AhaSlides in the learning process in terms of positive body language, consistent focus, verbal participation, confidence, and fun and excitement. This confirms that technology use can enhance learner engagement, which is essential to the success of English language learning.

Abstract

Technological advancements have led to the emergence of automatic translation engines across various platforms, including Instagram. Instagram’s automatic translation feature enables cross-language information delivery. However, its effectiveness warrants further evaluation. This study aims to describe the types of illocutionary acts found in the captions of the Instagram account @Folkative using Searle’s (1976) theory, analyze the translation methods based on Newmark’s (1988) framework, and assess translation quality in terms of readability using the model proposed by Nababan et al. (2012). Employing a descriptive qualitative method, this research analyzed 67 sentences from 20 @Folkative posts (January–February 2025) and involved 72 respondents through surveys. The results show that the most dominant illocutionary act is representatives (64%), with the presence of multiple illocutionary acts and emojis functioning as expressive cues. The most frequently used translation methods are faithful (34%) and literal (33%), indicating a strong source-language orientation (77%). The average readability score of Instagram’s automatic translations is 2.46, categorized as medium, which suggests that the translations are generally understandable but often unnatural and contain occasional errors. Overall, Instagram’s automatic translation feature is capable of conveying basic meanings functionally but remains limited in terms of linguistic flexibility and cultural adaptation. Its effectiveness depends on the alignment between language function, translation method, and the nature of social media as a space for dynamic and emotionally resonant digital communication.

Abstract

The research is focused on the noun phrases that contain connotation in the game A Space for the Unbound. This study aims to identify the structure, connotative value, chosen translation strategies, and semantic fidelity of these phrases to determine how well the English version maintains the intent of the Indonesian source. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The research object comprises 71 connotation-rich noun phrases taken from Chapters 1–5 of the original script and their published English counterparts. Data were collected through three procedures: content analysis of the entire in-game script, unstructured interviews with native English players to probe perceived connotation, and a focus-group discussion with bilingual raters who scored accuracy using Nababan et al.’s (2012) instrument. The instruments used were a coding sheet, an interview guide, and an accuracy-rating form. Data were analysed through Spradley’s ethnographic sequence domain, taxonomy, componential, and cultural analysis supplemented by frequency counts. The results show a dominance of subordinative structures (70/71, 98.6 %), with the source text leaning positive in connotation and the target text mirroring this distribution with minor shifts. Transcreation is the leading strategy (52.1 %), followed by literal translation (45.1 %), while foreignization and domestication appear only marginally; overall accuracy is very high (mean = 2.97/3). In conclusion, creative audience-oriented strategies are essential for conveying the game’s emotional nuance, and systematic accuracy checks remain crucial to safeguard semantic fidelity.

Abstract

This research investigates how Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are being embedded into translation education through a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) oriented framework. It focuses on two central concerns raised by the teaching community: first, how do translation educators view the integration of AI tools in their teaching, and what difficulties do they encounter when trying to balance these tools with more traditional approaches? Second, what skills do students need in order to collaborate effectively with AI in translation, and how might the curriculum be reshaped to help them build these skills? Through the semi-structured interviews with 9 instructors and focus group discussions with 21 students across three different university types: application-oriented, normal, and academic,the research offers grounded insights into how AI is being experienced in day-to-day translation teaching . The findings reveal that educators view AI as a valuable tool for enhancing translation efficiency but express concerns regarding its impact on critical thinking and cultural sensitivity. Students emphasize the importance of mastering AI tools such as ChatGPT and DeepL, while also critically engaging with AI outputs, particularly in terms of cultural nuances and ethics. The study proposes the integration of AI tools into translation curricula within a CLIL framework, aligning AI-enhanced tasks with the development of content knowledge, language proficiency, as well as cognitive and cultural competencies. These findings point to a pressing need to rethink translation training—not by replacing traditional methods, but by weaving AI use into tasks that still cultivate linguistic nuance, reflective practice, and ethical reasoning.

Abstract

This quantitative study aims to explore the challenges faced by students in reading comprehension, with a particular focus on difficulties in identifying main ideas and understanding vocabulary. The research was conducted at MTsS Darul Ulum Banda Aceh and involved 31 eighth-grade students as participants. Data were collected using a combination of pre-tests, post-tests, and questionnaires to provide a comprehensive overview of students' reading comprehension skills. Initial findings from the pre-test indicated that many students struggled to recognize main ideas within texts and had limited vocabulary mastery, which hindered their overall understanding of reading materials. To address these issues, the Collaborative Cross-Text Jigsaw (CCTJ) strategy was implemented over five instructional meetings. This method emphasizes student collaboration and interaction through structured reading activities. The analysis of test results showed a significant improvement in students' reading comprehension abilities. The correlation value of 0.863 and a significance value of 0.000 (which is less than α = 0.05) indicate a strong and statistically significant positive relationship between the pre-test and post-test scores. Additionally, the questionnaire responses revealed that students found the CCTJ method engaging and supportive. They reported feeling more comfortable learning English, with better comprehension of the reading lo texts and increased enjoyment during the learning process.

Abstract

This study employs a qualitative descriptive method to describe the shift in sentence structure that occurs on the in-game event page of Honor of Kings, along with an assessment of translation quality (acceptability). The data collection techniques used were content analysis and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). In this study, 80 data points were collected. Sentences were also categorized based on their communicative functions: imperative, declarative, interrogative, and exclamatory. The dominant shifts found were structure shift (29.02%), intra-system shift (28.13%), and unit shift (24.55%). A single sentence may contain multiple translation shifts, with structure shift being the most frequently occurring type, followed by unit shift and intra-system shift, reflecting the translator's need to reorganize sentence structure, adjust grammatical units, and navigate system differences to achieve a natural and accurate target-language expression. Overall, the translation result for Honor of Kings' in-game event page sentences produces an acceptable value of 2.58.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the types of noun phrases in the form of election term collocations and evaluate the readability of their translations in institutional news texts from the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia. The noun phrases that are the subject of this study are classified into three types, namely, modificative, coordinative, and appositive noun phrases, based on Widjono's theory (2005). Electoral term collocations in the form of noun phrases such as election results, election stages, and electoral districts have specific structures and meanings, so their translation requires accuracy of meaning and ease of understanding in the target language. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with content analysis techniques and the distribution of readability questionnaires to 25 respondents. Data were collected from 12 online news articles from the Indonesian Constitutional Court discussing disputes over the 2024 election results, with a total of 80 noun phrases. The results show that the most dominant type of noun phrase is the modificative noun phrase. Additionally, most translations of these noun phrases are considered easy to understand by the target readers, with an average readability score of 2.77 on a scale of 3. These findings indicate that the translation of noun phrases in institutional texts has achieved a good level of readability, although there are still some noun phrases that could be confusing if not adapted to internationally recognized equivalents.
