Abstract

This research analyzes the illocutionary acts of comments on Instagram directed towards soccer players, focusing on Vinicius Junior who posted about racism. The theories used in this research are Searle's (1979) illocutionary act types and Leech's (1983) illocutionary act functions. The purpose of this research is to identify and categorize comments based on their types and functions. The data consists of 201 English comments responding to Vinicius Junior's Instagram post on May 22, 2023, when he voiced his opposition to racism in soccer. The research results indicate that the expressive illocutionary act type is the most dominant (44.28%), followed by assertive (31.84%), directive (17.91%), and commissive (5.97%). No declarative illocutionary acts were found in the dataset. Additionally, the most frequently used illocutionary act function is the convivial function (57.71%), reflecting messages of support and moral encouragement, followed by the conflict function (28.36%), representing hate speech and racist comments, then the collaborative function (7.46%) and lastly the competitive function (6.47%). Expressive illocutionary acts include expressions of feelings such as like, sorrow, praise, and reproach.

Abstract

This study examines Racial Identity, Denial, Repression and Resilience in Danzy Senna's Caucasia. This research identifies how the author depicts Birdie's racial identity development, defense mechanisms, and resilience in responding to social expectations. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, applying Sigmund Freud's "Model of Psyche" and defense mechanisms (Denial and Repression), as well as Emmy Werner's resilience theory, which encompasses three stages: trauma identification, adaptive analysis, and positive transformation. Data are collected from the novel and relevant literature. The results show that Birdie's racial identity develops through internal conflict, balancing id, ego, and superego. Trauma and social pressures affect her resilience development, which is rooted in the dissonance between her authentic self and societal expectations. The study demonstrates how Birdie employs defense mechanisms to cope with racial identity and social expectations. Her journey reflects the psychological struggle of biracial individuals seeking acceptance in racially divided societies.

Abstract

This study examines how Keshi uses metaphors in his album Requiem to express emotions and convey deeper meanings in his lyrics. By analyzing the songs through the lens of Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory, the research identifies the types of metaphors used and explores what they mean in the context of each song. This study applies Use Theory by Wittgenstein to interpret the meanings of metaphors found in the song lyrics. Using a qualitative approach, the study focuses on three categories of metaphors: Orientational, Ontological, and Structural, to see how they shape the listener’s understanding of the themes and emotions Keshi expresses. The analysis of these metaphorical expressions shows that metaphors play a significant role in shaping the meaning of the lyrics, providing a framework for understanding the feelings and emotions expressed by the singer. This article presents one representative metaphor from each song, selected for its clarity and relevance to the metaphor type. The findings show that metaphorical expressions significantly contribute to the depth and emotional resonance of Keshi’s lyrics.

Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of women’s empowerment through Clarisse La Rue in Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters. The research focuses on the obstacles that hinder Clarisse from empowering herself and the character development she experiences throughout the Golden Fleece quest. Using Betty Friedan’s theory of women empowerment from The Feminine Mystique, this study examines how Clarisse struggles with patriarchal expectations, external pressure, and the need for validation from her father, Ares. This research applies qualitative methods and library research to analyze the novel as the primary source. The findings reveal that Clarisse initially embodies aggressive and competitive traits shaped by patriarchal expectations, yet gradually develops self-awareness and emotional maturity. Through cooperation, vulnerability, and leadership, Clarisse transforms from a stubborn bully into a more empowered and self-aware character.

Abstract

This thesis examines what are the impacts of climate change on nature as portrayed in the young adult novel Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. The focus of this research is to find out the impact of sudden climate change caused by the “Moon Crush” incident. Ecocriticism is applied as the primary theoretical framework, particularly Greg Garrard’s ecocriticism concept of “Apocalypse”. A qualitative method is applied, using the novel as the main data source and other relevant sources as the secondary data. As a result of the research, the writers found that Life As We Knew It effectively illustrates the potential real-life outcomes of a “Moon Crush,” showing a strong connection to scientific data. This research concludes that the moon has a significant influence on the Earth; if the moon were to leave its orbit, the Earth would experience disasters such as massive tsunamis and extreme climate changes. The impacts of climate change depicted in this novel include drastic temperature drops, crop failures, and resource scarcity. The writers emphasize that humans and nature are mutually dependent. Humans rely on nature for their survival, while nature is affected by human activities, which can either harm or help maintain the balance of the ecosystem.
