Abstract

This article aims to show and explain how the limitations on women during the Edwardian era in E. M Forster’s book A Room with a View. The historical approach helps the authors in analyzing the main problem of the book and how it happened during the years of the Edwardian period. It is library research using written materials as the main data to complete the article. The result of this research shows that women were struggling to fight for their rights. This struggle leads to the resistance of women to be able to be free as men, challenging traditional norms in British society. This article highlights the struggle for gender equality in Edwardian England, exemplified by historical sacrifices and Lucy Honeychurch’s defiance of societal norms in A Room with a View.

Abstract

This study aims to compare two works in different mediums: a novel titled Little Women, authored by Louisa May Alcott in 1868, and its film adaptation of the same title, directed by Greta Gerwig in 2019. This study explores how Greta Gerwig transformed gender roles and femininity in Little Women’s novel into a film version. This study employs the fidelity theory offered by James M. Welsh and the adaptation theory proposed by Linda Hutcheon. Qualitative analysis and library research are used as research methods in this study. The results revealed that the gender roles in the film adaptation had been portrayed with some changes, to focus more on their struggles to obtain their dreams and less romantic portrayal. The writers argue that femininity in the novel is depicted with a more modern sense of femininity and more aligned with modern feminist ideas.

Abstract

Mary Flannery O’Connor is famous for her religious view and self righteousness concept which she portrays on her literary works. This study aims to see hidden meaning of O’Connor’s work. This research adopts a formalist approach to analyze the work by examining its intrinsic elements to uncover how the work elements produce overall meaning and aesthetic effect. The findings highlight the self-contained nature of the literary work and emphasize the interrelationship between its various structural components to show moral lesson like realization after tragedy. The result shows O’Connor delivered moral message that through tragedy human realizes his mistake and regret is indeed at the end.

Abstract

Many people who have experienced childhood trauma generally experience conditions such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder that can cause internal conflict. This study aims to show the internal conflict in Medusa by Jessi Burton. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method and a psychoanalytic approach. The results of this study show that the traumatic incidents that happened to young Medusa made her feel helpless and ashamed, and she lost her self-confidence, which influenced her way of thinking that everyone who came would immediately leave her and even felt like she would be betrayed again. The traumatic incidents that Medusa experienced continue to haunt her through dreams. Her actions were caused by the internal conflict wherein her Ego attempts to mediate the demands of the impulsive Id and the moralistic Superego. The cause of internal conflict emerged because the dream kept repeating the incident where she was raped and punished by Athena, the Goddess that she served, which made her feel ashamed. Those incidents were why she hid when talking to Perseus and made a fake identity because she was embarrassed by her terrible appearance. The internal conflict in Medusa also influenced how she decides to react to someone who wants to kill her, Perseus. Her hatred for Perseus can be controlled by finally choosing what the superego wants: to forgive Perseus.

Abstract

This research examines the resistance of women in the Victorian period against patriarchy in the selected series of The Enola Holmes Mystery written by Nancy Springer. The aims of this research are to find patriarchal values shown by the male characters and society towards women and to reveal the way women characters resist against the patriarchal values in the Victorian period. In analyzing this research, the writer uses feminist literary criticism, especially radical feminism by Marilyn French and is supported by M. H. Abrams’ mimetic approach. In presenting the data, this research uses descriptive methods and qualitative research. As the result of the analysis, the writer finds four forms of patriarchal values shown in the selected series The Enola Holmes Mystery by male characters and society towards women. It consists of ruled by the elite, limitations in women’s education, women have no rights in property, and women have to get married. The writer also discovers that female characters’ resistance against patriarchy in four ways, such as disguise and dress reform, specific knowledge for women, open a service with male name, and gaining their freedom by escape from the patriarchal environment. This research concludes that Springer delivers patriarchy—the system constructed by society—was mostly beneficial for men than women despite the fact that they consider the system as the best solution for women to settle for a better life precisely reflects Victorian society.

Abstract

The objectives of this research is to identify and categories omission strategy based on experts model in the English Subtitle of the Keluarga Cemara movie. The method used in collecting the data is a non-participant observational method and the method used in analyzed the data was a translational identity method.The total number of subtitles in the Keluarga Cemara movie is 1084 subtitles. The amount of data analyzed using the omission in this research is 286 subtitles. Omission of Redundant words applied 67 times, Omission of Culture-Spesific References applied 96 times, and Omission of Emotional Fillers and Discourse maker applied 123 times. However, Omission of Difficult-to-Translate Idioms of Expression and Omission to Avoid Long explaination is applied 0 times. this study indicated that the source language tended to exhibit repetition of words or phrases that were not typically used in the target language. As a result, omission was employed to ensure the acceptability of the translation to target language speakers. The translator showed a tendency to omit expressions deemed unnecessary for translation due to the high frequency of lexical repetition in the source language. Additionally, the translator omitted certain utterances by actors in the film, as they were delivered in the TL.

Abstract

Joan Lindsay’s novel Picnic at Hanging Rock (1967) has been widely known in Australia as one of the best gothic novels. This research focuses on analyzing the elements of gothic found in Picnic at Hanging Rock to show the significance of the gothic elements in Australian literature. Taking this novel as the source of primary data, this research applies the theories of genre by Stephen Neale and gothic elements by Robert Harris. The primary data are analyzed by using textual analysis method, which involves close reading of the novel’s settings as the strong point in making the novel classified as a gothic literature. The result of analysis shows that Picnic at Hanging Rock relies a lot on the setting to present its gothic atmosphere. The two settings in the story, Appleyard College and the Hanging Rock grounds, completely embrace the gothic elements, which are: the setting in the horror place, the atmosphere of mystery, the supernatural incident, sentimental emotion, the omens, portents and visions, women in suffering, the use of gothic vocabulary, and hyperbolic phrases. All these elements are closely related with Australian setting, which is the Australian bush. It emphasizes that this novel gains its popularity as gothic novel because of strong gothic elements used in the setting of the novel, which are primarily related with Australian bush.

Abstract

This study analyzes Matt Haig’s The Midnight Library (2020) using a New Criticism approach to reveal how regret is transformed into acceptance through symbolism and narrative structure. A qualitative method with close reading was employed, focusing on the novel’s formal elements and supported by relevant secondary sources. The findings show that recurring symbols such as the library, green books, chess, and whales together with the cyclical narrative structure, create organic unity that reflects Nora Seed’s struggle with regret and her eventual self-acceptance. The study concludes that the novel demonstrates how formal elements interact to affirm the theme of embracing self-worth through the reconciliation of regret.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of nominal elements that appear in the book and determine which element type is most dominant. Moreover, this study also discusses the context of situation in the book The Twits and reveals its relation to the dominant use of a particular functional element. The data was collected using the close reading and note-taking techniques. This study applies G David Morley’s theory of nominally functioning elements and context of situation in both his books, Syntax in Functional Grammar (2000) and Explorations in Functional Syntax (2004). The findings for the functional elements show a total of 1275 data points of nominal elements. Among these, the nominal subject appears as the most dominant type of nominal element with a total of 931 data, followed by the direct object with 247 data, the oblique object with 48 data, the direct non-identifying complement with 29 data, and the direct identifying complement with 20 data. For the context of situation, the field reveals that the book is a character-oriented narrative text that mainly discusses the daily life and traits of the two main characters, delivered in written language with an informal and friendly tone between the narrator and the audience. The result highlights the dominance of the nominative subject, emphasizing its crucial role in constructing clauses and sentences and its use in a narrative text.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the types and functions of impoliteness strategies used by netizens in the comment section on Instagram of Benny Blanco, a celebrity who posted about his girlfriend, Selena Gomez. Fifty English comments in response to Benny Blanco’s Instagram post on July 22, 2024 were collected. Qualitative descriptive method and Culpeper’s impoliteness theory were used to analyze the data. The research results indicate that the bald on record is the dominant type of impoliteness that netizen used to respond Benny Blanco’s post with 24 data (48%). It is followed by positive impoliteness with 16 data (32%), negative impoliteness with 6 data (12%), and sarcasm with 4 data (8%). Additionally, the most dominant function of impoliteness that netizens used is affective impoliteness with 29 data (58%). It is followed coercive impoliteness with 11 data (22%), and entertaining impoliteness with 10 data (20%). These results indicate that impoliteness in social media does not only indicate rudeness but also as a way to attack someone. Specifically, this research shows that netizens use impoliteness in Instagram to express disagreement with Benny and Selena’s relationship.
