Abstract

Children's interest in learning should be continuously enhanced. Selecting suitable learning media is very important to support the increased interest in learning. A film can be one of the learning media that offers advantages for achieving a quality children's education process. This study aims to discuss the functions of films for children in children's education. The method used is descriptive qualitative with literary studies techniques. The study results show that there are three functions of films for children as learning media, namely film as a media for language learning, film as a media for character building, and film as a media for introducing multiculturalism. Film can stimulate children's imagination so that children can think actively and creatively. However, the functions of films are inseparable from the role of parents and teachers in selecting films and methods or techniques for presenting films so that children remain active learners.

Abstract

Sabine Kuegler is a German author who was born in Nepal. In her autobiography, Jungle Child, she shared her life experience living in a Papuan jungle as a child. She was accustomed to living a simple life that was untouched by modernization, among the Fayu people, a newly discovered tribe in Foida, West Papua. At the age of 17 she moved back to Germany by herself and found it difficult adjusting to her new environment. This was mainly caused of her deep-rooted connection to Papua culture and her lack of knowledge about European culture. This study aims to reveal the form of the appearance of hybridity, liminality, and ambivalence in Sabine's identity. This paper uses a qualitative method which is in line with postcolonialism discourse. Bhabha (1994)suggest that hybridity is a cross between cultures in society, which appears in various forms, such as language and manner. The result shows that the process of reforming her subjectivity is shown through symbolizations such as place and time setting which at fist creates dichotomies such as East vs West, and childhood vs adulthood. However, Sabine managed to find the connection between those dichotomies, which led to acceptance of her hybrid identity as a German who will always be a part of the jungle. The ambivalence of her identity is shown through her interaction as a German kid with Fayu People and her constant attempt to integrate into Western culture which always brings her back to her life in the jungle. Keywords: ambivalence, autobiography, hybridity, identity, postcolonialism

Abstract

This study aims to provide recommendations for folklore branding strategies for the Ngarai Sianok tourist destination in Bukittinggi as an effort to restore tourism in Bukttinggi. The research method used is descriptive qualitative by conducting a literature review of folklore and data relating to the Ngarai Sianok tourist destination as the primary data. Supporting data is in the form of data obtained from scientific articles and popular articles, as well as interviews with relevant subjects, such as the Tourism Office, Tour and Travel Agents, and tour guides. Data analysis uses the storynomics theory by Robert Mcee and Thomas Gerace by focusing on stories as a strategy to improve the economy, in this case through tourist destinations. The results of this study are that folklore has a positive influence to be developed as a branding strategy for Ngarai Sianok tourist destinations. Folklore can become narratives of tour guides and narratives of tourism promotion at this destination. In addition, folklore can be an inspiration for making souvenirs that can improve the community's creative economy around tourist destinations. Utilizing folklore can enhance the reputation of the Ngarai Sianok and become a medium for character education in a fun way. The dissemination of the Legend of Ngarai Sianok can also be an effort to preserve the folklore of Bukittinggi and support the realization of Indonesian tourism based on local wisdom.

Abstract

This paper discusses how the identity of a group of students from the Indonesian Literature Study Program at Andalas University, Padang, is constructed through drinking coffee in a coffee shop. Drinking coffee is one activity that is being loved by young people, especially amidst the massive emergence of coffee shops in various parts of the city of Padang. The number of coffee shops in the city of Padang influences the people's culture of drinking coffee. According to Baudrillard's theory of hyperreality, drinking coffee does not only contain use and exchange values, but also contains sign and symbolic values. The activity of drinking coffee is not just quenching thirst and delaying sleepiness, but is also done for the purpose of having fun and strengthening identity. In addition, there is an act of looking at each other and being seen between male students and female students in their behavior drinking coffee in coffee shops. Through filling out a questionnaire conducted by a group of students, it was shown that visiting coffee shops did not necessarily give rise to coffee connoisseurs, but rather as a form of lifestyle for early subjects and popular cultural practices, visiting coffee shops was shown as a fun activity, as well as strengthening one's identity in the world. virtual and real world.

Abstract

Comics can be categorized as literary works because they contain stories, ideas, and thoughts. Comics have at least two elements, such as images, and narration, which are interrelated. The pictures in comics are intended to stimulate interest in reading, develop imagination, and provide aesthetic elements. Therefore, comics can be used as a communication medium to convey stories and moral messages to readers and build character and digital literacy. This research aims to explain the role of comics as a medium for building character and digital literacy in the stories contained in the collection of children's comics published by Mizan and the Komik Next G series published by Muffin Graphics. Comic stories are written by writers for children aged 8-13 years and illustrated by professional comic artists. This research uses analytical descriptive methods. This research uses two kinds of data, namely primary and secondary sources. The data collection technique used in this research is the library technique. Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that the four stories used as research objects contained character education values, namely honesty and reminding each other in kindness, as well as being competitive and competing in a healthy manner; and the value of digital literacy, namely being wise in using devices, as well as using technology to develop talents, and the importance of supervision in using technology. The value of honesty and reminding each other in kindness are found in the story entitled Jujur itu Penting; the value being competitive in healthy manner is found in the story Kunci Juara Kelas. The value of digital literacy in the form of being wise and responsible in using devices is found in the story Gara-Gara Wi-Fi; The value of digital literacy in using technology for future development and the importance of supervision in using technology is found in the story of Mangaka Cilik.

Abstract

Syair is an old poem in the form of a song that has been passed down from generation to generation. As a form of oral literature, Syair is formed by the presence of formulas and formulaic that build the story in the poem. This study aims to find formulas and formulaic that build the theme of Syair Sultan Abdul Muluk from the province of Riau, Indonesia. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method and formula theory proposed by Albert B. Lord. The results showed that there were formulas and formulaic expression in the form of character names, place names, scenes, and times. However, in the time section it is found that time is described in a non-specific manner. This is due to differences in culture or character of the place and its people. The formulas and formulaic expression build the theme of the story, which is leadership. In addition, the results of the study also show that the style of language used as a storyteller is the language style commonly used in old poem, which is rhyming and containing metaphorical figures of speech.

Abstract

Literature plays a crucial role as a medium for social education transformation, particularly in supporting sustainable development in Indonesia. This study aims to explore how local literary works can be integrated into education through the lens of literary anthropology to strengthen character formation and promote the values aligned with sustainable development goals. The research focuses on two contemporary Indonesian novels rooted in local cultures, analyzing their potential to convey ethical, cultural, and social values relevant to inclusive and transformative education. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study applies content analysis and thematic interpretation guided by literary anthropology. Two novels—Gampo: Robohnya Rumah Gadang Kami and Negarabatin: Negeri di Balik Bukit—were selected as the primary corpus. Cultural symbols, narrative structures, and value systems embedded in these texts were examined and interpreted in relation to educational objectives and sustainable development themes. The findings reveal that both novels reflect rich local wisdom, including values such as communal cooperation, religious devotion, familial responsibility, and indigenous leadership. These values are strongly aligned with core educational goals, especially those related to quality education, social inclusion, and peaceful institutions. Cultural symbols like the Minangkabau rumah gadang and the Lampung term uyung serve not only as literary elements but also as pedagogical tools for character education. Furthermore, the study demonstrates how these texts can be integrated into contextual learning models, encouraging critical literacy, ethical reasoning, and cultural empathy among students. The study concludes that local literature is not merely a cultural artifact but a strategic educational resource capable of advancing inclusive and value-based education. By adopting literary anthropology as both an interpretive and pedagogical framework, the research contributes to the design of culturally grounded curricula that support transformative learning and sustainable development in Indonesia.
