Core Subject :
Tsaqafah is a journal published by the University of Darussalam Gontor with its aims related to Islamic Civilization. What we refer to as Islamic Civilization, in accordance with the terminology elucidated in Islam as Religion and Civilization by Hamid Fahmy Zarkasyi, consists of two substantial elements in our view, namely Culture and Knowledge. Through culture that has been Islamized, societies have developed traditions at the local level that remain consistent with their original culture without conflicting with Islamic values. Additionally, a portion of the population forms scholarly communities because of the obligation of seeking knowledge in Islam inspired by the revelations of the Quran and the practices in the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad, which subsequently led to the development of methodologies and research resulting in products referred to as Islamic Sciences, Islamicate Science, or Islamicate Society in a broad sense, encompassing various disciplines of knowledge.

Abstract

Before Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy, Indonesian fiqh was predominantly characterized by a rigid and blind imitation (taqlid) rigidly adopting interpretations from Islamic schools in regions such as the Hijaz, Egypt, and India. These foreign teachings often lacked relevance to Indonesia’s cultural context, causing friction between Islamic jurisprudence and local customary law (hukum adat). In response, Hasbi developed an Indonesian fiqh that integrated local traditions, aligning with the national motto Bhineka Tunggal Ika, which UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised as crucial for a harmonious future in Southeast Asia. This approach fosters unity through the respectful recognition of cultural diversity. This study explores how sustaining Bhineka Tunggal Ika can be achieved through religious moderation based on Indonesian fiqh, particularly focusing on Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy. Employing qualitative research, the study utilized a literature review and thematic content analysis through four steps: data collection (gathering relevant information), data reduction (filtering out irrelevant data), data display (visually organizing key themes), and inference (synthesising findings to address research questions). This study reveal that Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy’s Indonesian fiqh approach strengthens religious moderation by integrating universal Islamic principles with local traditions and promoting peaceful conflict resolution, while being consistent with national regulations-Presidential Regulation 58/2023 and Minister of Religion Regulation 3/2024-that promote unity in diversity and foster social cohesion in Indonesia. Therefore, Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy’s Indonesian fiqh modernizes Islamic law by integrating maslahah (public welfare) and urf(cultural practices), moving beyond rigid taqlid, and deserves recognition as a vital source for strengthening religious moderation and sustaining Bhineka Tunggal Ika in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study was a critical assesment of epistemological standpoint concerning how the development of western epistemology in ‘text generating’ technology. From the Islamic perspective, the tradition of khabar shadiq, which is based on revelation and ethics, serves as the foundation of knowledge, differing from the Western view that relies more on the scientific method and various data sources, including big data. Modern technology, such as ChatGPT, which utilizes big data, raises ethical and epistemological questions in the Islamization of science. ChatGPT itself faces limitations in its knowledge, while big data often encounters issues of inaccuracy and bias. Therefore, serious consideration is needed regarding ethics in developing and using technology like ChatGPT and its alignment with Islamic values in modern technology. This study highlights the importance of how far the islamic epistemology contrasting western epistemology in developing the technology from the Islamic worldview perspective.

Abstract

Knowing the background to the emergence of a law, the reasons for establishing a sharia law and the history of the formation of the law is an important thing to study. The purpose of this study is to provide readers with an understanding that the application of kafaah in marriage has a long history starting from the Arab Jahiliyah era to the era of the madzhab scholars. This research is in the form of library research, where the tasyri` date books and Islamic history books are the main materials for data exploration. The results of this study indicate thatLineage played a central role in marriage in pre-Islamic Jahiliyya Arab society. In the highly tribal and family-oriented society of Jahiliyya Arab society, lineage was a determinant of social status, protection, political alliances, and inheritance rights. The arrival of the Prophet Muhammad with the religion of Islam brought significant changes in the views of Arab society towards kafaah nasab. Islamic teachings emphasize equality among all human beings before God, thus shifting the focus from nasab as the main factor in marriage to be more inclusive, emphasizing other aspects such as religion and morality. The arrival of the Prophet Muhammad with the religion of Islam brought significant changes in the Arab community’s view of kafaah nasab. Islam still maintains kafaah, but with more humane criteria. Kafaah is a tradition that existed before Islam and was continued by Islam. Islamic teachings emphasize equality among all human beings before God, thus shifting the focus from nasab as the main factor in marriage to be more inclusive, emphasizing other aspects such as religion and morality. Subsequent developments during the time of the ulama’ madzhab kafaah emerged as a logical necessity of the existing legal rules of marriage, balancing the arguments for the benefit of marriage and the principle of egalitarianism in response to the social conditions in each region and the evolving legal logic.

Abstract

Context/Purpose: Elderly are at risk of having poor sleep quality due to chronic illness, emotional distress, anxiety, environment, malnutrition and low physical activities. Evidence showed islamic spiritual therapy effectively improve mental health, reduce anxiety and depression. However, the use of ruqyah syar’iyyah for improving sleep quality due to mental health problems has not been studied well, therefore this research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of ruqyah therapy on sleep quality of elderly people living in a nursing home with mental health problems. Methods: This study used Quasi Experimental with one group Pre-test Post-test design approach. Elderly in the nursing homes were purposively selected based on their Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score. Seventeen elderly met the inclusion criteria (PSQI score above 5, Muslim, able to read Qur’an, and followed all the research stages) and they were trained how to perform ruqyah syar’iyyah. The intervention was delivered by reciting selected Surah in the Qur’an once a day for three nights. The post-test was held on the last day of data collection by measuring PSQI. Results: The age of respondents range from 61 to 82 years old with the majority at the elderly age (60- to 74-year-old at 76,5%), most of the education level of the respondents were elementary school (64,7%). The PSQI mean score was 14,88 ± 2,09 (pre-test) vs 9.12 ± 1,6 (post-test) P-value<0.05. Interpretation: The mean PSQI score significantly decreased after the ruqyah syar’iyyah intervention, indicating an improvement in sleep quality. The recitation of specific verses from the Qur’an is seen as a source of tranqulity and relief, potentially helping the elderly cope with anxiety and loneliness. However, this research excluded the cause of poor quality of sleep of the elderly, therefore further research investigating the cause of poor sleep quality of the elderly in the nursing homes with larger studies are needed to validate the effectiveness of Ruqyah Syar’iyyah in managing sleep disturbances in the elderly. Conclusion: Nurses and other heathcare providers are suggested to use Ruqyah syar’iyyah therapy for intervening poor sleep quality among elderly, especially in the nursing home.

Abstract

The question of hedonism has become commonplace because the tendency to smell earthly pleasure, luxury, or what is identical to wasting money for interests that are not for primary needs is a form of foya-foya and has taken root in a long-lasting habit, more related to style outfits. The discussion about outfits has been in the Qur’an, one of which is in QS. Al-A’raf [7]:31, which refers to the word az-zinatu. The interpreters of the Qur’an have interpreted it in various ways, such as treasures, jewelry, and clothing. The majority of the interpreters mean something that covers the body. As for the word israf in this verse, it is a way of excessive prohibition that leads to wastefulness and being trapped in hedonism. By using the Tafsir Maqashidi method, this article builds on previous interpretations of the terms az-zinatu and al-israf in particular, revealing that the behavior of israf is not only aimed at the health aspects of the body in the context of eating and drinking alone but also as an excessive ban on dressing. This article will show an understanding that excessive outfits can have a negative impact, up to mubazir. The use of the maqashidi tafsir method in this article is not only because this method is the latest, but it can also be used to understand various sentences such as social verses, science, and others. The result of this article is about the outfit in QS. Al-A’raf [7]: 31 indicates that the word israf also refers to the outfit of human beings. In addition, this article also focuses on the social aspect of QS. Al-A’raf [7]: 31 covers social relations to all mankind on earth in dress. Thus, this verse confirms that humans are wise in deciding behavior in outfits, as the words az-zinatu and al-israf become the basis for determining attitudes in order to achieve hifdz daulah and hifdz nafs, so that the maqashidi in this verse can be widely felt in the lives of human audiences in this world.
