Core Subject :
Tsaqafah is a journal published by the University of Darussalam Gontor with its aims related to Islamic Civilization. What we refer to as Islamic Civilization, in accordance with the terminology elucidated in Islam as Religion and Civilization by Hamid Fahmy Zarkasyi, consists of two substantial elements in our view, namely Culture and Knowledge. Through culture that has been Islamized, societies have developed traditions at the local level that remain consistent with their original culture without conflicting with Islamic values. Additionally, a portion of the population forms scholarly communities because of the obligation of seeking knowledge in Islam inspired by the revelations of the Quran and the practices in the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad, which subsequently led to the development of methodologies and research resulting in products referred to as Islamic Sciences, Islamicate Science, or Islamicate Society in a broad sense, encompassing various disciplines of knowledge.

Abstract

Dutch colonialism extended beyond political and economic domination, aiming also to control religious and cultural spheres through education and the promotion of Latin scripts. The central problem this study addresses is how K.H. Sholeh Darat employed religious and cultural practices as strategies of resistance against colonial hegemony. This study aims to analyze the forms of cultural resistance employed by K.H. Sholeh Darat within the framework of James C. Scott’s Hidden Transcript theory. This research uses a library-based method with a qualitative analytical approach. Data analysis is conducted using the framework of Hidden Transcript to explore the interplay among public transcripts, hidden transcripts, and everyday forms of resistance. The findings reveal that K.H. Sholeh Darat’s use of Arabic Pegon in his Islamic texts served as a medium for transmitting religious values embedded with implicit messages of Islamic nationalism. This symbolic resistance effectively preserved local identity and fostered cultural and national consciousness among Javanese Muslims. In conclusion, Sholeh Darat’s resistance was non-confrontational yet ideologically powerful, affirming James C. Scott’s theory that dominated groups can construct hidden spaces of resistance through symbolic and cultural expressions in everyday life.

Abstract

Sigmund Freud was a figure who had a wide influence. He explained that religion originates from human thoughts. This article aims to further explain Freud’s theory of the origin of religion and analyze it through the perspective of Kalam Jadid. This research is qualitative research with a literature study type. The data obtained are then analyzed interpretively, comparatively, and historically. Following the assessment process, it was discovered that the following points encapsulate Freud’s idea of the genesis of religion. First, totemism is a sort of religion that dates to early tribes. Second, monotheism is one of the faiths that have evolved from earlier ones. Third, people invented religion to get over emotions of helplessness and terror when confronted with difficult life circumstances. Therefore, religion is a type of neurosis as well. According to Kalam Jadid, there are several flaws in Freud’s thesis. There is no hard evidence to back up Freud’s claim that totemism was the first religion. Freud’s premise that God does not exist is also the foundation of his theory. It is implied that Freud disregarded the idea that revelation is a source of knowledge, and that people are inherently religious and have a spiritual side.

Abstract

This study discusses the ideology applied by traditional Horsebow archers in South Sumatra, specifically within the Perkumpulan Pemanah Berkuda Indonesia (Perdana). The aim of this research is to understand the ideological concepts held by the traditional archery community, analyze the training processes they undergo, and investigate their influence and contributions to strengthening collective identity and enhancing the performance of its members. Using an ethnographic approach, this research reveals the significant role of the Horsebow archer ideology in fortifying local cultural roots, expanding influence, and achieving achievements at national and international levels. This traditional archery practice not only strengthens the Islamic cultural heritage but also enhances the technical skills of community members while enriching their collective identity. The dedication of the younger generation in preserving traditional practices and applying these ideological values has proven to result in achievements, build strong social bonds, and make a significant contribution to preserving religious and national values. The ideology upheld by the Horsebow archers also plays a role in strengthening national identity through sport and tradition, while celebrating cultural diversity in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article examines scholarly views on the precision (d}abt}) of the Prophet’s Companions in narrating hadiths by comparing early and contemporary hadith literature. The aim of this research is to reveal whether the quality of precision is truly guaranteed in the Prophet’s Companions as is their integrity (‘adālah), and to explain various arguments related to this matter. This research also attempts to address criticisms questioning the validity of Companions’ narrations on the grounds that they are not ma’s}ūm (infallible); as ordinary humans with the potential for error and forgetfulness, and not all Companions having the same level of intelligence (d}abt}). This research is library-based with a qualitative method that conducts in-depth analysis of authoritative works in hadith literature, covering phases from early to contemporary. The research finds that Imam al-H}āfiz} Ibn H}ajar al-’Asqalānī is among the scholars who explicitly state that all Companions possess the quality of d}abt}, placing the status of Companions at the highest position in the levels of al-ta’dīl (authentication). Meanwhile, the opinion initiated by Imam al-S}an’ānī and followed by several contemporary scholars states that the guarantee of Companions’ integrity does not automatically guarantee their precision, with various arguments including the fact that some Companions had erred and forgotten when conveying hadiths. However, after conducting in-depth research on the texts of both opinions, the researcher concludes that the difference between the two groups of scholars is verbal in nature. The first group does not deny the possibility of forgetfulness and errors among the Companions, while the second group does not explicitly determine which individual Companions are considered to lack the quality of d}abt}. Both groups agree that errors that occurred among the Companions can still be tolerated and do not damage their overall precision.

Abstract

The concept of human peace, traditionally explored in the context of physical or political conflicts, has gained relevance in digital spaces where human interactions increasingly occur. This article examines how peaceful narratives can emerge within controversial discussions online, focusing on a specific case: the debate around the use of the flex menstrual disc. Using Netnography as the primary method, this study observes netizen interactions within a polarized thread, highlighting how, despite differing opinions, some participants contribute to a constructive and peaceful dialogue. Supported by theories such as Nonviolent Communication and Conflict Resolution, the research seeks to identify language patterns and behaviors that foster peace, even in contentious digital environments. The results of this study are to demonstrate that peaceful engagement is possible in online discussions, offering insights into how human peace can be maintained and encouraged in digital interaction spaces.

Abstract

Al-Baghdādī holds a significant position within the early Ash‘ari epistemological tradition. His work, Usul al-Dīn, offers a systematic explanation of the foundational principles of Sunni belief, integrating an epistemological framework that draws from both the Ash‘ari intellectual tradition and the broader Islamic intellectual heritage. This study employs qualitative textual analysis of Usul al-Dīn, focusing primarily on how Al-Baghdādī articulates various epistemological concepts. Several themes are explored within the text, including the definition, classification, and sources of knowledge. The analysis reveals that Al-Baghdādī places knowledge as the foundational principle in his theological discussions. Through his structured and profound approach, Al-Baghdādī views epistemology as an essential tool for resolving theological issues, providing a rational foundation for understanding Islamic faith. This focus on epistemology not only lays the groundwork for the further development of Ash‘ari thought but also solidifies the position of Ilm al-Kalam as a rational and systematic discipline. By critically engaging with various foreign epistemologies, Al-Baghdādī not only strengthens Islamic theological arguments but also expands the intellectual horizons of Islamic theology itself.

Abstract

This research examines the concept of good fathering in the story of the Prophet Jacob and its contextualization in the concept of modern parenting. This type of research is library research by collecting verses from the Quran and related hadiths, so the method used is the thematic (maudhu'i) method. The data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis in accordance with the procedures in the maudhu'i interpretation method, namely categorizing the collected data into sub-themes, then structuring and analyzing them. The results of this research are: First, the concept of good fathering contained in the story of the prophet Ya'qub is reflected in his role as a successful father in educating, caring for and accompanying his children who have diverse behavior, and successfully manage problems between siblings. The principles of good fathering that can be taken from the story of the Prophet Jacob are, the function of father as educator (QS 12: 17, 18, 83-87, 94-98), father as protector (QS 12: 4-5, 63-67), father as decision maker (QS 12: 67, 87), father as guardian of harmonious family relationships (QS 12: 17-18, 83-87, 94-98), and father as director of the family vision (QS 12: 38). Second, the concept of good fathering of the Prophet Jacob is very relevant to be contextualized in modern parenting. Prophet Jacob educated his children using a democratic-authoritative parenting model, which prioritizes dialogue with patience and affection. This type of parenting model is very relevant to be applied to raising children amidst the current liberal parenting model in the modern era today.

Abstract

Fraud is a widespread issue that can cause significant harm across various sectors, including government, business, and educational institutions. Several theories, such as the Fraud Triangle, Fraud Diamond, and Fraud Hexagon, have been developed to understand the factors that drive individuals to commit fraud. This research aims to analyze the role of religiosity values in minimizing fraudulent actions using a qualitative method and a literature study approach. Data were collected through an analysis of literature from journals, books, and previous research that examined the relationship between religiosity and fraudulent behavior. The findings indicate that religiosity plays a significant role in reducing individuals’ intention and opportunity to commit fraud. Individuals with a good understanding of religion tend to have a stronger moral awareness, making it more difficult for them to rationalize fraudulent actions. Furthermore, religious values can help individuals manage pressure and suppress ego/arrogance, which are key elements in the Fraud Hexagon theory. Although religiosity serves as a deterrent to fraud, this study also finds that external factors such as opportunity and collusion continue to contribute to fraudulent behavior.

Abstract

Drawing on critiques from Islamic Political Economy (IPE) and Islamic International Relations (IIR), this study analyses the political, economic, and geopolitical implications of United States foreign aid to Indonesia through the lens of the Islamic worldview. Using a philosophical approach, the research interprets the spiritual and ethical dimensions of the Islamic worldview through foundational sources such as the Qur’an, Hadith, and classical Islamic scholarship. The findings reveal that US foreign aid has minimal impact on economic growth. Instead, it predominantly promotes Western-style liberalization, democratization, secularism, and strategic geopolitical objectives, particularly as a counterbalance to China’s influence. This study highlights the misalignment between secular aid strategies and Islamic principles, advocating for policies grounded in the Islamic worldview. By integrating faith-based principles into the analysis of political economy and international relations, the research offers a comprehensive framework for understanding how Islamic ethics can shape governance, international relations, and economic behaviour. As a library-based exploratory study, the findings emphasize the need for further empirical validation through qualitative and quantitative methodologies. This research provides valuable insights into aligning Islamic ethical frameworks with contemporary political and economic practices.
