Abstract

The repatriation of Indonesian Migrant Workers (IMWs) does not merely generate economic challenges but also produces new socio-cultural dynamics of livelihood survival. One emerging strategy is to use culinary experiences acquired in Taiwan as the foundation for micro-enterprises in rural Java. Nevertheless, former IMWs are required to undertake adaptation and modification processes to construct a halal image for Taiwanese cuisine. In this context, halal Taiwanese cuisine functions not only as an economic commodity but also as an instrument of gastrodiplomacy that negotiates identity, market preferences, and socio-religious legitimacy at the local level. This study employs a qualitative case study design in Banyuwangi, a region recognized as a concentration area for former IMWs. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation related to halal Taiwanese culinary activities operated by former IMWs. The findings reveal that: first, the success of halal Taiwanese culinary enterprises in Banyuwangi is strongly determined by their capacity to adapt to local tastes and community needs; second, these enterprises contribute to the strengthening of five livelihood capitals of former IMWs, namely human, social, financial, physical, and natural capital; and third, gastrodiplomacy operates as an intangible livelihood asset that transforms migration experience into social legitimacy and economic sustainability for former IMWs.

Abstract

Women continue to experience limited social space and the persistence of patriarchal dominance in various aspects of life. These conditions highlight the need for empowerment initiatives that promote independence and critical awareness among women. Korps HMI-Wati (KOHATI) Babel Raya, as a semi-autonomous body of Himpunan Mahasiswa Islam (HMI), plays a strategic role in strengthening women’s intellectual capacity through literacy initiatives and gender-based writing training. Empowering women through writing activities positions them not only as recipients of knowledge but also as producers of knowledge and agents of social change. This community service program aims to empower women through gender-based scientific and non-scientific writing activities within KOHATI Babel Raya. The study employs a qualitative approach based on Participatory Action Research (PAR), emphasizing active participation and collaboration between researchers and participants throughout the empowerment process. The mentoring activities include literacy-strengthening, writing workshops, and guided practice in producing written work. The results indicate that writing can serve as an effective medium for women’s empowerment. The program successfully enhanced participants’ awareness of gender issues and their writing skills. As an output, participants produced a non-scientific publication, a gender-based short-story anthology authored by KOHATI Babel Raya members, which has been published with an ISBN.

Abstract

This research is motivated by environmental degradation caused by sedimentation, urbanization, and poor drainage systems in areas along the Tjimanoek River in Indramayu. Therefore, this study aims to determine how the process of empowering riverbank communities is implemented in the Tjimanoek Indramayu riverbank ecology program. The method used is a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collection techniques including interviews, observations, and documentation studies. Interviews were conducted using purposive sampling with the snowball technique, data validation through triangulation, and analysis following the stages of Miles and Huberman: data reduction, data presentation, and data verification. The results of this study involve the collaboration of Penta Helix, namely the government, universities, industry, communities, and the media. This program uses an Ecocriparian approach, which emphasizes the restoration of natural river functions, reduction of domestic pollution, environmental education, and ecotourism. The results show that the community empowerment process in Tjimanoek Park began with government planning, specifically by the Department of Housing and Settlement, together with the Polytama company. Then, after planning, program implementation involves the Penta Helix, including employees from Kimrum, companies, society or communities, mass media, and universities.

Abstract

The Ciliwung River is a lifeline in Jakarta, a legacy of our ancestors that must be preserved for the benefit of the surrounding community. However, the Ciliwung River faces various problems, including recurring flooding, massive pollution (domestic waste, industrial waste, and microplastics), declining water quality, and land-use changes that worsen hydrological conditions. The Mat Peci community addressed the challenges of Ciliwung River conservation by establishing the Ciliwung River School, utilizing the surrounding area as a living laboratory consisting of a hydroponic garden, a chicken farm, an orchard, a flower garden, a living pharmacy for waste treatment, and the processing of garden produce into traditional foods. However, this living laboratory has not yet received widespread public attention. Therefore, a development model is needed to attract public attention and increase brand awareness. This study aims to develop an appropriate ecotourism model for the Ciliwung River School so that it can develop with islamiv value and become one of the leading Ciliwung River nature conservation areas in Greater Jakarta. This research uses qualitative methods with a case study design. Supported by data collection techniques including semi-structured interviews, the study also conducted passive participant observation and a literature review. Sampling was carried out using the snowball sampling technique with the main theory used being the diffusion of innovation theory. The result oh this study is The result oh this study is Mat Peci Community already designing and implementing three educational living laboratory programs, including communal gardens and gardening classes, circular farming, and a waste bank program. The development of natural laboratories for education has entered the implementation and confirmation phase, in accordance with the diffusion of innovation theory. Al Fikr's concept, which explains how information and skills should be acquired, aligns with the concept of teaching through natural laboratories.
