Abstract

This research aims to explore the meaning behind racially-based bullying messages experienced by biracial adolescents. Racial bullying targets the physical features or ethnic identity of the victim, often resulting in significant effects on their personal development and mental well-being. Using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach, this study delves into the lived experiences of several biracial adolescents aged 12-19, with mixed heritages including Indonesia-Korea, Indonesia-India, Indonesia-New Zealand/Dutch, and Indonesia-Nigeria. In-depth interviews served as the primary method of data collection, focusing on the victims' interpretations of the bullying messages they encountered. Symbolic Interactionism Theory and Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM) were applied to analyze how victims make sense of and respond to these racially motivated messages within their social relationships. The findings suggest that biracial adolescent as victims interpret the racial-based messages as deeply ingrained with racial stereotypes. Additionally, the findings also revealed that biracial adolescent understand the act of racial-based bullying as act of social exclusion and the construction of self-doubt. These racial-based messages interpretation leads to a negative self-concept and the development of trust issues. Moreover, biracial adolescent interpreted the process of communication with family, friends, and school authorities as the efforts to seek support and process their emotions. In conclusion, the findings indicate that biracial adolescents perceive racial-based bullying messages as deeply rooted in racial stereotypes and view these acts as forms of social exclusion that foster self-doubt. Racial-based bullying not only affects the psychological development of biracial adolescents but also shapes their understanding of their racial identity. This study highlights how biracial adolescent make sense of the experience they faced in order to form coping mechanism.

Abstract

This research is based on the author's interest in the framing of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is frequently reported by Detik.com as an influential figure in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In these reports, the image of Vladimir Putin receives significant attention from journalists, ranging from his political career trajectory, the motives behind his command to deploy Russian military operations in Ukraine, to Putin's responses to foreign policy decisions impacting Russia's status on the international stage. This framing has the potential to create bias where the Indonesian online community may develop greater sympathy for Russia and even admire Vladimir Putin. The data collection tool used in this research consists of 25 relevant news articles from Detik.com concerning the figure of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Russia-Ukraine conflict during the 24-hour period following Russia's attack on Ukrainian territory on February 24, 2022. This research employs Robert N. Entman's framing method with the aim of defining problems, identifying causes, conducting moral evaluations, and offering solutions to the issues in reporting on the Russia-Ukraine conflict related to the figure of President Putin. This research concludes that there are five framings of Vladimir Putin carried out by Detik.com, namely: (1) Vladimir Putin holds ideals that conflict with the Ukrainian government, the United States, and their allies as opposition; (2) Vladimir Putin wants to protect the lives of Ukrainian soldiers and maintain Ukraine as a neutral state free from Western influence; (3) Vladimir Putin is portrayed as an aggressor responsible for military operations and causing a humanitarian crisis in Ukraine; (4) Vladimir Putin is depicted as an ally of Belarus, successfully garnering support for launching military operations in Ukraine; and (5) Vladimir Putin is portrayed as a decisive Russian leader with an authoritarian and charismatic side.

Abstract

The phenomenon of generational transition has given rise to a shift in perception and marriage patterns among women as a group that is culturally attached to this issue. This study aims to examine the meaning of marriage experienced by women across generations. Meaning emerges along with human efforts to develop themselves and their minds in social life as the Symbolic Interaction Theory used in this study. Through interviews with six respondents from two different generations, namely the Old Generation with a birth range of 1947-1980 and the Young Generation born around 1981 to the present and have reached the legal age for marriage, this study reveals that the shift in meaning occurs as a product of their experiences in socializing and consuming different information. The interpretative paradigm applied in the interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) method helps researchers interpret the differences in the meaning of marriage from two groups of women related to several aspects to produce conclusions; 1) both generations position marriage as a sacred institution, although the Younger Generation emphasizes optional and contextual values, 2) there is a view from the Older Generation that marriage completes happiness, although in the majority non-material welfare is seen as being under the control of the individual, 3) both generations agree that marriage has the potential to present an economic burden, although the Older Generation considers marriage to be still relevant in creating financial stability, 4) a happy marriage can only be achieved if there is no domination by one party, either husband or wife, 5) the presence of children is not seen as something natural by the majority of informants, although there is an opinion from the Older Generation that children must be present in marriage, 6) the perception of the Younger Generation is formed from the accumulation of information about their offline and online activities, while the previous generation only relied on physical interaction.

Abstract

Generation Z is the largest age group in Indonesia, accounting for approximately 27.94 percent of the total population. Online gaming has become an integral part of daily life for Generation Z in Indonesia. As a generation raised in the digital era, Generation Z shows a strong attachment to technology, including online games, which, when played with high intensity, can lead to addiction. One of the most popular online games among Generation Z is Mobile Legends. This study aims to examine the influence of peer group communication intensity and self-control on the level of addiction to Mobile Legends among Generation Z. The study employs a quantitative explanatory method with purposive sampling involving 108 respondents. The results indicate that peer group communication intensity has a significant effect on the level of online gaming addiction, where higher communication intensity within peer groups correlates with a greater likelihood of addiction. On the other hand, low self control also significantly contributes to higher levels of online gaming addiction, especially in Mobile Legends

Abstract

Film is one of the media used to spread information or messages to the public. Filmmakers have a vision and mission in making a film, not just for entertainment, but also to convey values that reflect social conditions and critique various aspects of life. "Keluarga Cemara" is a film released in 2019 that focuses on Abah's efforts to keep his family together with Emak, Euis, and Ara after facing bankruptcy. This study aims to identify the family values presented in the film's scenes by understanding the filmmaker's intentions in creating "Keluarga Cemara." This research uses a qualitative study by Schleiermacher's hermeneutic analysis method, which interprets a text by analyzing two parts: the cortex and the nucleus. The cortex analysis involves grammatical and semantic analysis by considering the context of the object, while the nucleus contains textual interpretation by the filmmaker, considering norms, values, and ideologies. The theories used in this study are organizational control theory and representation theory. The results of the study show that the filmmaker of "Keluarga Cemara" pays attention to social issues related to family by portraying family values into the film. Out of the 71 scenes in the film, 17 selected scenes highlight family values such as togetherness, stability, and loyalty. This film reflects social phenomena happening in society, especially family-related issues. In this regard, film industry professionals are expected to play a dominant role in being more selective in choosing the narratives or themes presented in films.

Abstract

This research aims to understand the communication process between parents and children in making decisions regarding the choice of a study program in higher education. In the family context, educational decisions often involve complex discussions between parents and children, where topics like the child's interests, career aspirations, and future become key points of discussion. This study uses an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach to explore the subjective experiences of children and parents during this communication process. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with four parent-child pairs who are currently or have already gone through the process of selecting a study program in higher education. The research findings indicate that the communication style of parents, such as authoritative or democratic styles, has a significant impact on the final decision. Moreover, factors such as parental expectations, the child's interests, as well as social and cultural pressures also influence the dynamics of communication. Children involved in open communication with their parents are more likely to choose study programs that align with their own interests, while in cases of authoritarian communication, the decision is more often determined by the parents. These findings emphasize the importance of openness and support in the educational decision-making process within the family environment. This research also offers practical implications for families and educational institutions in improving more effective and supportive communication between parents and children.
