Abstract

Gender inequality in Indonesia still frequently occurs, especially in the field of Public Relations, which is often seen as a feminine industry in terms of gender issues. According to Deborah (2017), in her research examining the relationship between public relations practitioners and feminist theory, it is stated that marketing, advertising, and public relations attract more female participants compared to males. This statement is also supported by data from the PRSA (Public Relations Society of America), where 70% of registered practitioners are women (Wrigley, 1999). This research aims to understand the essence of women’s stereotyping experiences in the workplace, particularly in hotels, an industry that often requires PR as a long-term investment for the company. The research uses a critical paradigm with a critical phenomenology approach. The theory applied is the Standpoint Feminist Liberal Theory. The data collection method used in this research involved in-depth interviews with two female employees as informants. The results of the study show that female employees in two hotel companies experience forms of stereotyping, such as negative labeling, special treatment, and specific expectations directed at female PR employees. Although they experienced different forms of stereotyping, the informants viewed them in different ways. The first informant considered it as a challenge or a job risk that every female PR employee must face, while the second informant saw it as a shortcoming in the PR world that she needs to overcome as a PR leader.

Abstract

Branding involves a series of marketing communication activities aimed at enhancing a brand by integrating its core concept into all advertising and stakeholder interactions. Harukaedu, a startup edutech company, faced challenges with its marketing communications due to its three independent business units. To address this, the company undertook a rebranding process to unify its identity and streamline communication strategies. Using a qualitative case study approach and constructivist paradigm, the research examined the brand change process based on General Model Planned Change, Brand Management, and Corporate Rebranding theories. The findings reveal that the company executed a revolutionary rebranding through a structured, step-by-step approach to rebuild its brand and image. The rebranding process included entering & contracting, diagnosing, planning, and implementing, which involved repositioning, renaming, redesigning, launching, and evaluating, before concluding with institutionalizing change.

Abstract

The phenomenon of students pursuing higher education in Indonesia often involves additional challenges when working on their final thesis, particularly due to the distance from their families. This distance frequently leads to complex academic pressures and may result in study delays as well as tragic incidents involving final-year students. Long-distance communication through media becomes crucial in maintaining relationships, providing emotional support, and motivating students amid the limitations of distance and time. This study aims to explore how the communication experiences between students living away from home and their parents influence the motivation for completing their final thesis. The theory applied is the Family Communication Patterns Theory by Ascan F. Koerner and Mary Anne Fitzpatrick, using a phenomenological approach and data collected through in-depth interviews with four student informants. The results of the study indicate that long-distance family communication plays a key role in supporting the thesis-writing process. This communication serves as a medium for maintaining emotional connections, offering support, and providing motivation, despite facing various challenges such as time differences, busy schedules, and technological obstacles like unstable internet connections and limited access to communication devices. The study also found that strong conversational orientation within families creates a supportive environment for students to share their academic progress and challenges, even though parents may not fully understand the specific details of the final thesis. Parental support, both emotional and financial, helps students feel supported throughout the academic process. Open communication between students and parents is also crucial, although some students prefer to seek advice from friends or siblings rather than their parents on specific issues related to their thesis.

Abstract

This research is driven by the post-crisis situation of Garuda Indonesia, the state-owned national airline that is still striving to rebuild public trust following a series of challenges, including financial losses, mounting debts, instances of corruption and mismanagement. The restoration of trust has been accompanied by a variety of post-crisis news coverage in the mass media over the past year. In order to compensate for the frequency with which it is reported on, Garuda Indonesia has begun uploading content to its Instagram account with the aim of increasing public trust. The objective of this study is to ascertain the impact of post-crisis news exposure and exposure to @garuda.indonesia Instagram content on the level of trust in Garuda Indonesia. This research is of an explanatory quantitative research. The sampling technique employed was non-probability sampling, with the target population comprising Indonesian individuals who were aware of Garuda Indonesia's post-crisis news and had encountered the airline's Instagram content within the previous six months. Tests were conducted using linear regression analysis. The results demonstrated that news exposure exerted no partial effect on the level of trust, while content exposure exhibited a partially significant effect on the level of trust. Furthermore, the simultaneous exposure to both news and content had no effect on the level of trust.

Abstract

This research explores how Pantene Indonesia challenges the perception that beauty products are exclusively for women through its advertising campaigns, particularly by featuring male influencers like Keanu Angelo in its promotions for the Pantene Miracle Hair Supplement. As Indonesia's beauty industry, especially hair care, continues to grow, Pantene has sought to redefine its brand image in response to competitive pressures and traditional beauty standards. Utilizing Stuart Hall's Reception Theory, qualitative interviews with five informants reveal diverse audience responses shaped by their social backgrounds and personal experiences. Findings indicate a spectrum of interpretations, including dominant, negotiated, and oppositional positions, with some informants exhibiting a dual negotiated-oppositional stance that acknowledges the ad's inclusive message while critiquing conflicting elements. These insights highlight the complexity of audience engagement with media messages and suggest that while Pantene's strategy has the potential to shift perceptions and challenge stereotypes, it must also incorporate broader representations and community outreach efforts to resonate authentically with evolving societal beauty standards.

Abstract

The research was motivated by the culture shock experienced by Indonesian students studying in Taiwan, related to differences in the education system between Taiwan and Indonesia. The selection of Taiwan for research was motivated by the high interest of Indonesian students to continue their education in Taiwan. The research focuses on the education system, including the teaching and learning process in class, group and individual assignments and exams, as well as internships and final projects. The purpose of this research is to understand the communication experiences of Indonesian students in overcoming culture shock in the education system in Taiwan. The research was conducted with an interpretive phenomenological approach and descriptive qualitative research method. The research used Self-Adjustment Theory and Identity Negotiation Theory. The data collection technique was carried out by literature study and in-depth interviews with six students from Indonesia class of 2020, who studied higher education at the undergraduate level in Taiwan. The results found that students need to take the initiative in initiating communication in learning activities and daily life, for example to get acquainted, ask questions, discuss, and get closer, this is because the communication culture in Taiwan tends to be individualistic. Students need to master the use of traditional Mandarin to support the communication process to overcome culture shock, as the main language used by Taiwanese people. Indonesian students need to approach themselves to live in groups in order to communicate and exchange ideas, especially with fellow Indonesian students, but Indonesian students can also avoid communication, in order to take a break from the pressure of educational culture shock, before finally returning to a condition that is ready to communicate.

Abstract

The existence of sexual assault on public transportation is proof that security in public spaces has not been fully realized, especially for women who tend to be victims. Transjakarta, one of the public transportation companies in DKI Jakarta, is holding a Stop Sexual Harassment Campaign to create a safe space involving passenger participation. Peer group communication is one of the factors that can influence female passengers to have a firm attitude in dealing with sexual harassment in Transjakarta. This research aims to determine the influence of exposure to the stop sexual harassment campaign in Transjakarta and the intensity of peer group communication from the Busway Fan Club community in shaping the attitudes of female passengers facing acts of sexual harassment in Transjakarta. This research uses purposive sampling with a total of 100 respondents. The theories used in this research are Cognitive Response Theory and Reference Group Theory. Testing uses simple linear regression analysis. The findings show that there is an influence from exposure to the stop sexual harassment campaign and the intensity of peer communication from groups from the Busway Fan Club (BFC) community on the attitudes of female passengers in facing acts of sexual harassment in Transjakarta. These findings show that cognitively, affectively, and conatively, female passengers tend to act assertively if they see or become victims of sexual harassment in Transjakarta.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the experiences of tatto owners related to experiences of This study aims to understand the experiences of tattoo owners related to experiences of prejudice and discrimination experienced in the community using a phenomenological approach. The focus of this study is the subjective experiences of tattoo owners who experience stigma, prejudice and discrimination from family, social environment, or work. This study uses Symbolic Interactionism Theory which examines how the meaning of tattoos is constructed through social interactions which then give rise to stigma, prejudice and discriminatory actions against tattoo owners. The interpretive paradigm used in this study is Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) which helps researchers to explore in depth the personal experiences of informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six individuals who have permanent tattoos on their bodies from various social and cultural backgrounds. The results of the study showed that male tattoo owners are often perceived with criminal acts such as drug addicts, pickpockets, being rude, thugs. Female tattoo owners are associated as bad women and naughty women. In addition, dynamics of change in the social environment were found before and after having a tattoo. Tattooed individuals experience prejudice and discrimination after they have tattoos on their bodies. Manifestations of prejudice are manifested through marginalization in the workplace, as well as exclusion in everyday social interactions.

Abstract

Indonesia is the sixth most orphaned country in the world. Not only orphans, many children grow up without parents due to divorce, economic deprivation, and neglect by their biological fathers and mothers. Living without the role of parents makes children experience many difficulties in forming a positive self-concept due to the lack of communication and direction from parents as the first group of children. Many children without the role of parents end up living in orphanages in order to continue their lives properly. This study aims to understand the communication experience of children without the role of parents in the formation of self-concept in orphanages. This research was conducted using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) method with in-depth interview techniques to five children without the role of parents who are foster children in orphanages. This research draws on Mead's theory of symbolic interactionism self-concept. The results of this study show that children without the role of parents can still have a positive self-concept as they grow by establishing good interpersonal communication with caregivers in orphanages. The two-way communication model and the effectiveness of interpersonal communication between the two parties can make children still feel valuable and worthy of a bright future even without the role of parents. The child's self-image is also formed from the positive view of the environment towards the child. Even so, there are still communication barriers that arise in orphanages. The most common barriers experienced are semantic barriers in the form of language differences and psychosocial barriers resulting from past trauma.
